A lot of talk about potential changes to our backline structure next year and beyond (re debating Saad's inclusion/ Doc into the guts etc) and it has me thinking the impact of the looming loss of Kade Simpson has been understated on here. He plays a huge role in our side. Do we have a ready made "go to" half back replacement?(ie Could a Cunningham type* be groomed?)... If not, are there any younger Simpson types we can go to. (A younger Suckling type or GWS' Wilson perhaps.)
* I'm in favour of looking within. I have a bit of time for Cunningham yet see him being the underrated,trade-vulnerable, squeezed out mid - as Jarryd Lyons was from the Crows. Cunningham has a few Simpson traits I believe. Thoughts??
Think Cuningham will be a very good mid for a very long time. P.S. At Carlton.

I feel that Trigg may have taken on one of the biggest jobs in football and that was to smooth the divide between executive and football departments.
We were all over the shop and confusion reigned. Great start point was to set-up an independent committee to appoint the new coach and once we did appoint Bolton, he became the driver of connecting all facets of the club. I don't know how Bolton has achieved so much so quickly and I've worried that he may be taking on more than he's capable of achieving, but things become so much easier when you don't have to sell your ideas over and over again.

We seem to finally have an all-for-one and on-for-all approach to just about everything we're doing.
This seemed nigh on impossible only 2 years ago and as much as we're all preaching the miracle of Jones, this is the bigger miracle for mine.

I've previously stated I'm not a huge fan of Saad and I wouldn't consider him a crucial player for us going forward.

It is hard to not to get excited when he gets his skates on, but for mine he either gets caught or turns the ball over too frequently from there.

I don't see him suited to the role Doc plays now but I do see him as far more suited to the role we have Simpson playing. In fact stylistically there aren't too many players I can think of that are more similar to Simmo than Saad is.

He's contracted for another year so maybe we're sounding him out as Kade's potential replacement, whether that be at the end of this year or further down the track.

Simpson will go on next year. Willo would be a short term replacement, as I see more benefit of him playing further up the ground. There are a couple of young guys either not getting regular games at other clubs, that could be traded in for late a pick or others that could be part of bigger trades.

From our current squad, my best suggestions would be Byrne, followed by Williamson.

Each one is mid-sized (roughly speaking), brave, makes good decisions, offers run and has excellent disposal.

Impossible to replace Simmo, but these ones come closest IMHO.

Examples?

Did you see that on one of those Facebook fan pages!
My two cents - weekends are match times. Players aren't usually having meetings. They're prepping or recovering. Fairly sure Sos was in the rooms after our game on the weekend too. Unless I saw wrong on the tv. Would've thought he'd do his travelling during the week. Happy to be wrong.

Seems lots of clubs are after Hopper now and we weren't even mentioned as one of them.

Kelly, Hopper, Balic and Saad would fill several of our most pressing needs. Would be over the moon if SOS could pull that off. But I don't know whether that will be likely to happen.

Will certainly be a very interesting trade period. Clean your F5 key boys; lots of refreshing to come.

Football Clubs are no different to small and medium sized businesses - except they have the benefit of guaranteed revenue from the AFL and the opportunity to add to this by increasing membership ( variable revenue base). Another great benefit (difference) is that the market for Carlton's product ( lets stick with the analogy for a few minutes) is fairly stable in that interest in AFL as entertainment is within fairly tight limits stable.

Now given the advantages of this type of economic stability - what can go wrong at a Club like Carlton or nay other Club?

and the answer is

Management.

The easiest job in the world is to fix something that is badly broken - because genius isn't required.

The Board has to be congratulated because they decided to modernize the management of the Club - lets be clear this means you part time social workers stop truying to make decisions and let professionals do the job.

In comes Trigg ( whom many criticised) in comes SOS ( whom many criticised) in comes Bolton ( whom everyone was happy with because it wasn't Malthouse).

Carlton has followed correct process and suprise surprise - the results are starting to come through on many fronts.

People will be shocked to see Carlton go through the 50K membership and fly through to over 60K over the next couple of years - I wont. All that can derail this rejuvenation is SOS and Bolton failing to keep positive momentum. I give that a low probability.

Call me an optimist if you like.

If GWS actually want to hold on to Hopper there's no way Geelong's first pick this year gets it done. Of the guys they actually wanted to keep, Treloar/Boyd/Marchbank, a first round pick has been the starting point.

I've always liked Saad. He's a poor mans version of that gun rebounding defender that GWS have (whos name I cant remember).

He would provide attacking flair from the backline, and that's something we do need.

I just have no idea what we would/ could be offering other than our third rounder at pick 39 and a player like Graham or similar.

Find it amazing that people say "no" to players at other clubs, that are best 22 and their sides will play finals. Especially given where we sit, staggering
Living in Adelaide i see quite a fair bit of these guys, Atkins plays only because their is no alternative if lyon was still their atkins would not be playing. The Crows midfield bats 3 deep (sloane, crouches) thats it. Wigg cant even get in the best in the 2's. Atkins is a downhill skier who make really costly turnovers when the pressure is on.

Get Kelly, Zac Jones, Balic throw in Fyfe, Martin and Rockliff as FA's

Murph, SPS,Kelly,Fyfe,Martin,Fisher,Rocklift,Jones,Cunners, Balic..oh and keep Gibbs, don't forget Gibbs

Midfield sorted...all 11 of them

Now to the forward line.....................
