Evan Turner got made to look a lot better than he was by his previous coach. It had very little to do with the salary cap climate.
Yes he did, but I still doubt teams were lining up even last year to offer that money.. Portland probably outbid each team by 4-5 mill and gave him years.. Terrible in hindsight..

Reminds me of the Deng deal, where apparently the other offers were for around 11 per year and he got 16+..

Crazy offseason that we will tell our kids about how 7th/8th men were getting paid more than guys like Curry and KEMBA haha

Why?

That's a terrible contract. One of the league's worst.

It was his doing aswell. I'm glad he's prepared to sleep in the bed he made I guess.
When you factor in the andrew Nicholsen dead money than really Brooklyn have Crabbe for around 12.5 per year.. Waiving the trade kicker was great work too..

I mean I may have preferred holding out and taking on another contract at the deadline for a decent asset but at least crabbe can help them on the floor this season..

Marks is doing the best in a shit situation. Love the LA trade, wasn't a fan of the Toronto trade and think this one is a slight win.

Crabbe is an NBA player who will be able to help and so is Carroll. So that is good for them I guess.

Im more thinking about once they get some picks back and want to actually start adding good pieces in a year or two they're going to have 50 million of crabbe, carroll, and mozgov on the books.

Oh definitely not denying that offering turner that money was completely ridiculous and they would have had no competition for his services at that price.

By the time they start adding real pieces to the team those contracts will be done.

Well the first time they get a pick is after 18/19 season. In that off-season Carrol and Lin come off the books and Mozgov and Crabbe only have 1 season left. They can suck for one more year and get another good pick. Then they will have 2 good picks and a heap of room in their salary cap.

Seems like a good plan to me (well... the best you can do in their spot).

Allen Crabbe didnt have his best year, but he's got talent, I was really keen for the Bulls to go after him last season, and even this off season ina salary dump. Portland signing him to that deal, albeit forced into it, and inking Evan turner when they had Harkless on the books as well was beyond dumb

The salary cap is 99.093, and Crabbe puts Brooklyn at 94.732. They have Carroll and Lin off the books next year as well.

Getting a talented player for nothing is a win, especially given they have no incentive to tank. You could argue they should have pushed for a pick in there as well, but maybe Portland weren't willing to budge.. .who knows. He's a capable defender, he gets a decent number of steals and can finish the break, and has shown decent flashes defensively, most of his issues are losing switches, not pushing through screens, all really fixable stuff. I'll back Atkinson to bring the best out of him, and Brooklyn really can use shooting for opening up lanes for DAR.

They have the Toronto pick, plus added Russell to develop and have a couple of seconds coming in next year, plus own their firsts after that. Its looking far better than it was.

Obvious the positions are reasonably fluid, and they arent blessed in the big man department.

Russell/Lin/Dinwiddie
LeVert/Kilpatrick
Crabbe/RHJ/Carroll
Booker
Mozgov/Acy

Thats a fairly good 1-4 rotation (assuming Carroll/RHJ play some there) by Brooklyn standards.

Cleveland, Boston, Toronto, Washington, Hornets and Bucks are probably the top 6.
Miami, Detroit around the mark for 7 and 8.
Philly looking to improve into playoff contention (a year away in all honesty)
Orlando, Knicks, Pacers, Bulls, Hawks are all noticeably worse.

I'm not saying they'll be a playoff team, but they've won 20 and 21 the last 2 seasons. Heck Anthony Bennett even started a game for them last season. They got 36 games from a hobbled kender in Lin.

Its not the best contract... but (one of) leagues worst? He at least shows upside. Meanwhile Deng 72 million, Plumlee 50, Mahinmi 64, Noah 72, Mozzy 64... all far worse by my estimation. And for a team that was well under the cap and isn't a marquee destination for free agents.... well hell you'll be overpaying anyway.

An unproven GM that's a year and a bit into a 4 year contract waiting another 2 years with junk clogging up the cap on the roster before adding wins is showing some serious cojones. Just saying.

Pretty much. Grabbing Crabbe/Carroll/Dlo a protected 18 pick. 18 second rounder and a 17 first for nichols/Lopez expiring/Hamilton is brilliant. No club in any of these trades has lost. Brooklyn dont grt a first rounder for years so they are at least semi competitive now

Where though? They won't have another first round pick untill 2019, So they have like 2 years of absolute suckage where they wont get any assets unless they flip young good players, Lose badly and lose revenue, not gain any lottery pick

Forget next year, Next year is another dead in the water doesn't matter where they finish type scenario. They wont get a top pick, They wont compete.

Next year they can be a treadmill eastern team, Lin/Dlo/Carroll/ rotating guards, Crabbe/Carroll/Lavert/Booker/Hollae-Jeffers with Allen/Mozgov, I dont think it's as trash as people believe. But

2018-Booker at 10m expiring Isnt the worst contract so 70m Salary, enough for another "offer a solid player a 20M contract"

2019 Carroll/Lin will be off the books, 27M, They get their first rounder back, Imagine They'll tank hard this year, Lin at 12m expiring will be pretty good value. A top 5 pick incomming, Some flexability,

2020-Mozgov will be expiring, Crabbe will be expiring. So they have 40m. Lavert/Hollae Jeffers, the only two you would move forward on the list, The option to pay D'LO if he comes out and fills out his potential, 25m at worst case

They can;'t take any more bad contracts untill next year, However they will probably get Toronto's late first rounder next year.

They turned Hamilton/Nichols/Expiring lopez and pick 29 into Crabbe/Mozgov/D'Lo a protected first from Toronto and a second rounder

Thats a whiole bunch of absolute shit for at least some OK players, a young talented PG

It's only a problem if you have young talented players who want to be paid if your carrying these contracts for a bunch of bench players and your going to hit Luix tax. lucky for brooklyn they wont have either problem for 2 years

I used to defend B King, obvious pressure to compete now when Brooklyn arrived, But jesus F**king chist you have to wonder how hard he was pushed to get a competitive team out there, Was it at any costs? Because if King had final say without job pressure, nobody takes that deal

He's better than both those guys. I know Rose has his injury issues, but Evans has played 65 games in the last two years (started 12).

Splitting hairs really, they're all in the same 'flawed/risky/wish it was still 2011' basket. Ty Lawson's another one, there's just too many good point guards and not enough jobs to go around.

Interesting fact. Durant opted out of a contract that would have paid him $27M this season for a contract that means he will get paid 25M. Would people have had issues if he just had taken up his player option on the original deal?

It's the potential to circumvent cap rules that is worrying.

Back in the day you had to offer five, seven or even ten year deals to stand a chance of luring a star. One year deals for superstars seemed to be the preserve of the likes of Jordan, tied in with cap explosions etc etc.

I don't think the NBA ever envisaged a scenario where gun players would switch teams without the security of a big deal. Tbh I expect it to become a hot topic for the next CBA, because small market teams will be extra jumpy about it.

Why the Ugh?

Cos it was late, I was tired and my jimmies were rustled godammit! :p
