Rumour Pie + Saint 'Coming out' on The Footy Show

It's the only reason to consider The Footy Show as the place for it though.

Call me cynical, but I wouldn't be surprised if the player(s) who comes out first makes the most of it. Why do it for free when you know someone will pay you for the 'exclusive'? The player doesn't even need to pocket the money themselves.
If it was me I'd tell the Footy Show to get f***ed, they've been about as gay friendly as an Australian Christian Lobby meeting over course of their history.

If the rumour is true, they don't owe it to us or anyone else to come out. If they feel they can help other young people who might feel additional stress or burden in their lives because of their sexuality, then I'll happily applaud them if they do choose to though.

Either way, they have a right to a happy personal life just like the rest of us.

You are already being disrespectful starting a stupid thread when it hasn't happened yet with name's being floated around. probably not the smartest thread to go early on if you wanted to be sued and to be respectful you shouldn't be going early on this call being respectful on this sensitive life changing topic.
1) Why would OP be sued?
2) I disagree that this is a 'life-changing' example. Obviously, it sets a great precedent, but I'm assuming the players in question, if true, have already accepted their sexuality, likely quite a long time ago. The only difference for them is that before, the AFL public wouldn't have known, and after, they will know. Simple as that. Any announcement of this type shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone who keeps up with the AFL, also. As of 2012, 2% of the Australian male population openly identify as homosexual, and this figure will have increased as homosexuality becomes more accepted. There's honestly no real reason to say why there shouldn't be around 2% of all AFL players identifying as homosexual, even though the cohort aren't a cross-section of Australian society.

Interesting too considering the Collingwood player rumoured, he hasn't exactly received the greatest treatment from his club's supporters this year. Wonder how this might change that from both a positive and negative perspective.

I agree. The other options aren't significantly better though. Unless they step outside the AFL media landscape and go on the ABC (or print even).

Honestly don't care.
It doesn't matter to me at all to where they stick their dicks as long as it isn't in me

This attitude worked great in the past for North, and more recently for the Dogs. :drunk:

I would love them to tell TFS to **** off, and just rock up somewhere as a couple like the AFLW players were able to. Wishful thinking though.

Disagree.

Because, despite what you might think, being gay isn't normal in elite sports like AFL. How many openly gay active players are there in the NFL? Elite level soccer? NBA? Maybe that'll tell you why this is a big deal. And it'll only be a big deal the first couple of times. Then it'll be normal and a non-issue eventually, which is what you want, right?

Really? Unless you were gay yourself this is really kind of impossible to know. Your opinion reeks of the idea that just because things aren't as bad as they used to be then they're completely solved.

Wouldn't be an issue because, as you said, gay men are fully accepted in society now.

1. Breaking the ice, allowing for more to do it in the future.
2. Further normalises sexuality.
3. Shows that it's okay to be proud and open about your sexuality.
4. Sets the ball rolling for any backlash, insults, slurs to occur (and they will) and subsequently gotten over.
5. Allows for the AFL community to further understand the plight of those different than the majority.

Great post.

Then the very next day they're all over the football media and have a voicemail from every journo in town wanting to do their first interview.

And then someone in the media will make a gay joke about the player and then the virtue signallers like Caro, Gill, and Waleed Ali will all bang on about how Australians are homophobic and attiudes need to change. Then Tony Shaw will be forced to apologize while crying like a six year old on AW.

Must admit, did LOL at this. :D

What did he do that over again?

What are you talking about? Actually, don't bother explaining.
When it comes to something as personal, (and potentially impactful) as this, club loyalties/bias should be removed from the equation, (IMO).
Also, do you think this is the first we supporters have heard of this rumour?
So the whole positive/negative thing is a moot point.

Sam is actually quite a big advocate in this area

How many LGBTQI+ advocates blatantly use the wrong pronouns for transgender people (the Caitlyn Jenner example from earlier this season) or get all sulky because they've been told it's no longer socially acceptable to use a guy in a dress as a way to get an easy laugh?

He's received some fairly loud Bronx cheers in at least 2 games this season. Which was incredibly unfair on him considering his age and the load he was being asked to carry.

What I meant was as an overall group the supporter base might be more sympathetic and cut him a bit more slack, but on the flipside, it might make the reaction from the dropkicks worse on his quiet days.

Plays up forward but has been helping out in the ruck?

Good for him but not so good for the father son prospects :(

Not necessarily, will be interesting to see how this one day affects the F/S rule.

Eh? Unless the player in question seeds a woman i dont see how father son talent is relevant here

Would support a tweak to the father son rule to include an adopted son but as far as natural talent goes one is rolling the dice.

I am on holidays next week in Thailand with my wife and three kids and my mate from Sydney and his partner and their two twin girls.

This has nothing to do with father son........just in case you haven't got that yet.

This is very big step for the two boys if they come out.......I just hope they are not made to become the gay poster boys for the AFL.

A lot of "who cares", "what's the big deal?" type comments in this thread. If I may put on my gay hat for a moment, and wonder who it might be that cares, here are a few points to consider:

*Australian state and federal governments open with a recital of the lord's prayer (Matthew 6:9-13).
*The lord's prayer is in the same book that explicitly tells its faithful to murder gay people (Leviticus 20:13).
*These governments refuse to allow gay people the basic human right to marry the partner of their choice.
*These same governments allow the scammers working in the religion business to dodge their self-evident ethical obligation to pay tax. (The same taxes that gay people pay.)
