My only issue, albeit not being expert in Westerosi battle tactics is where were the Lannister screening scouts? They are escorting valuable supplies though a valley and let themselves be surprised by enemy cavalry.

TBF they did have a scene where Randyll Tarly is complaining about how thinly they've stretched their forces in order to get all the supplies back to KL. It also isn't that hard to believe that they wouldn't have even been expecting another army to have been on the mainland yet after they'd trapped the Unsullied and Euron has taken out most of Dany's ships.

Edmure Tully would be the ideal catch.

Then you have Danaerys lands in the south, Tullys have the Riverlands and Starks have the North.

All three areas controlled by allies.

Unless Arya killed her I think Edmure is still married to and has a child with one of the Frey girls.

Dickon Dany? He's such a putz. I wouldn't rule out Gendry for Dany, the Jon thing might still happen although she is his aunty!

I not sure how Gendry could become relevant. We know he's Robert's bastard but who in Westeros does, and can they prove it to the houses loyal to the Baratheons?

Without the Baratheon last name he would be a poor tactical ally.

Seems like he's been largely forgotten about after Arya slaughtered the Freys.

He should be. You'd think as soon as news got out that all the Freys had been slaughtered either some of the women or Tully allies would go and spring him from there.

I think it would be pretty easy to annul a union like that. She didn't seem like a turd so you'd think she'd just let him out now.

"One sided opinions on game of thrones if you disagree with my views dont debate it with me just get the hell out".

Trump supporters have started up a similar thread on the SRP board to validate their own biased opinions.

I don't mean to sound like I'm having a go but why are you so certain that this nitpicking problem is just entitled book readers having a whinge?

I can assure you that there are plenty of book readers here just as frustrated by this carry on as you are. I think you're being a bit harsh lumping all the whingers in with the book readers TBH. I also doubt that a lot of them even have read the books anyway.

People aren't relentlessly complaining about stuff because they think Martin would have done it in a more impressive and less convenient way. They're complaining because they're unable to momentarily suspend their disbelief in order to enjoy the show. They're people who can't accept that due to budget and time constraints we're going to have to put up with some short cuts to get where we need to be.

Whereas book readers are very aware of how hard it is to wrap up this story because Martin hasn't even worked out how to make it happen yet. They might complain about a character inconsistency from the book, or how a certain storyline deviates from the book, sure. However being invested in the books doesn't automatically make someone want to derail a thread to talk about ****ing cotton padding. You don't suddenly become that pedantic by reading a book.

Is it just me or is the discussions surrounding plotholes and like-minded critiques more profound this season than previous threads?

More plot holes, due to bad writing, results in more discussions. More, and bigger, plot holes are opening up as the DBs move further away from the original source material. No great surprise that this will result in greater discussion.

lets wait to we see him get out before we complain about it. the start of next episode might be him struggling to swim and then either dying or being rescued by the dragon.

They may yet come up with something plausible. If he dies... there's no plot hole (as repeatedly noted in previous posts). If the dragon rescues him... there's no plot hole. If he swims to safety, under his own steam.... massive plot hole. A lot depends on how they resolve the situation. Could go either way.

Jamie's swimming lesson aside, the final battle did have a couple of moments that made me go "why the hell did they do that?". These are not "plot holes", just things that don't make a whole lot of sense.

The first was Dany taking out the Lannister soldiers by flying across the line. This created a gap for the Dothraki to pour through, so fair enough. They also set a record by having 20 stunt men lit up for the stunt, which is apparently a world record. Question - why would she not fly along the length of the line, toasting the entire army? From a military perspective, this makes little sense. The answer is probably cost - 20 stunt men was a world record, lighting up 200 stunt men probably would have blown the episode's budget completely.

The second was the decision to toast the supply wagons. We watched her fly repeatedly along the supply column, roasting one wagon after another. Why? She has an army stuck in Casterly Rock, with no food... and here she is destroying a column full of supplies that the Unsullied desperately need. Why? Probably because it looks pretty on the screen, even if it makes very little logical sense. Presumably this battle takes place not far from Kings Landing (given that the gold makes it safely to the city) - it's a long way from Casterly Rock, so who knows if the supplies would have even made it there in time. Could well be a moot point, so I'm not overly annoyed by it. It did make for very pretty pyrotechnics.

Looking to more positive things... I loved the sword battle between Arya and Brienne. Outstanding. I also liked the scene with Bran getting the best of Littlefinger. I figured "chaos ladder" was significant somehow, but it wasn't until I read this thread that I made the connection with Littlefinger's season 3 speech. Kudos to those who picked this up so quickly.

As for the poisoned crossbow bolts... I'm not sure. The idea hadn't even occurred to me. The biggest impediment would be a lack of knowledge regarding Dragon biology, given that they're magical creatures. I certainly wouldn't put it past Qyburn to coat the barbs with a concoction of the deadliest poisons he could come up with, and hope for the best. It will be interesting to see how this one pans out.

I loved the sword battle between Arya and Brienne.

It was kinda cool but nonsensical. How did Arya have the physical strength to parry Brienne's blows with her tiny piece of steel that is Needle?

In the training exercise, she also pulled Valyrian steel on Brienne (who was obviously using a blunted training blade).

I really used to enjoy this show. Thought it was some of the best television I'd seen.

But now I realise how blissfully unaware and naive I've been… unintelligent even. The writing is lazy! There are massive plot-holes! How could I have been so foolish and mis-led?

So that's it. No more Game of Thrones for me. I will wait patiently for the day that HBO announce their latest smash-hit!

I shall look forward to watching hour after hour examining realistic ship building techniques in a 13th Century fantasy world on an island bereft of timber. I am trembling with anticipation at the 13 episode season that will explain the art of packing metal armour with copious amounts of cotton…. only there had better be some black guys doing the picking or else I'm going to get all huffy about the lack of historical research! Talk about quality, entertaining television…. much better than a three minute innocuous scene with that Greyworm eunuch guy. Who wants three minutes of apparent filler when they can show hours of people cutting down trees on another more forested island? And I will stand and applaud as the non-lazy writers who used to be accountants and VicRoads employees collect Emmy after Emmy, despite having no film or television experience whatsoever as well as choosing to make their acceptance speeches dressed up as Gandalf or Dr. Who.

This is a woman riding a dragon. Not Rommel planning inch by perfect inch how to take victory in North Africa. I very much doubt she thought anything other than 'find these c***s, fly towards them and just burn the f*** out of them. Supply-wise perhaps it doesn't make much sense, but maybe it was just a gross demonstration of power.
