I have a suspicion that the Suns will offer Steven Motlop a large 3 year deal netting the Cats band 1 compo which the Cats will then send to the Suns for Gaz.

Even if Geelong arrange a sweetheart deal with Gold Coast to create a first round or sandwich round (between 1st and 2nd) compensation pick to pass along for Ablett it's going to cost Geelong money and likely a second player on top of the one Gold Coast signing to get him home due to the salary cap.

GAJ isn't close to the player that he used to be. Don't get me wrong, he's still very very good (always will be) but he's not going to be the difference between Geelong winning and losing a premiership. Everything about the age demographic on their list that you've said, I agree with, but you're dramatically underselling what Ablett would provide them.

Instead of Motlop - a flakey, ridiculously inconsistent half forward - you're getting a midfielder who can play anywhere in the forward half and be more productive than everyone on their list, with the single exception of Dangerfield.

They keep Duncan, Selwood and Danger on the park, Ablett is just gravy. Can show up or not as suits, tearing games apart by kicking six in a half as a medium forward or go into the midfield and reversing your clearance/contested ball issues.

It'd only last for a year or two, and he's nowhere near the player he used to be, but he'd be a huge in in the genuine short term. They go from a side with three and a half players to having a starting midfield of Ablett, Selwood and Danger.

What I see when I see GAJ back at Geelong is someone who is eased through the home and away season. Come finals he's hit really hard early and the news stories for the next week are all about the Ablett tragedy and how cost Geelong the game/premiership.

North are known to be offering 1.5 compared to Richmond's 1.1. Yep 2.8 mil over a 7-year contract. I see Richmond going up to 1.25 per and him settling for it. It's still 1.75 mil more over the lifetime of the contract but he's still walking away with 8.75 mil and I believe Richmond would compensate him after he's retired as an ambassador of the club. Now, if they were to win a premiership he'd make that up as a Richmond premiership hero (puke).

He's the sort of old bloke that you're obliged to leave your best defender on or tag, just so he doesn't remind you why he used to be the best running round. Just his presence makes whoever runs with Selwood or Danger a bit less effective, as who's going to risk Ablett getting off the chain?

Watching him every week I can see where you're coming from and I'd normally agree but he's 33 and those shoulder injuries haven't been faked. He's going to find that he's a classic case of the body being unable to do what the mind wants it to. It's almost impossible to shut off your body and mind for multiple years and then try and bounce back the way that he would have to.

Will cost them that amount to get his shoulder right first, just runs around gathering meaningless possessions most of the time now.

Could be dangerous as a permanent forward but he would have to get interested in tackling and pressuring again......

I think Gaz will play for peanuts next year. GC would be stupid to play hardball as Gaz will just retire, a 1st round pick (18) for a 34 year old is great business.

Injuries aside Gaz has been fantastic this year and his output is a Lo g way ahead of the guys who were pushed out.

It makes you wonder if he was actually injured this year or there was more to it.
