I'm actually looking forward to a few years of watching kids develop. When I was growing up footy was like the Premier League and there was a very real possibility, terrifyingly real, North would die. We actually tried to merge ourselves buy other clubs shat themselves.

We've paid the debt off now, booze cruise down to Tassie a couple of times a year is fun, actually enjoy watching someone like Simpkin - first act ever in a North jumper, make Luke Hodge look like a dill at Arden Street - develop nicely, watch the footy world wake up to what a freak Garner is.

Could never be comfortable being shit, buy now we can be crap for a few years without fearing the chop.

I'll finally get to know what is like supporting a Big Four club, watching us get belted every week but not worrying about money.

Was a shit footballer because all he had was the nous to know where to run but a woeful kick, dumb decision making, and general spudness skill-wise but he spent about 11 years on a list, played for a 150-year-old club, and probably has a million dollar house somewhere to show for it.

Quite the feat for limited abilities.

The basis of the this tryhard troll thread is that North tried and failed to poach two of competitions best midfielders - and this is somehow foolish or reckless. Really? How dare they?

As somewhat said, theres nothing wrong with going after Kelly and Martin, either would be huge helps to their future.
Always unlikely to get them though and will likely be forced down the usual draft path.

North's problem is not recruitment. The abject failure to develop and improve players (same at the Pies) is the major problem.

To the extent you're right, the biggest 'development issue' we've had is not giving enough games to the kids we recruited in the past few years while we were busy having a crack and playing the likes of Drew, Dal Santo and Boomer a year too long. Yes, Boomer could have gone on, and Drew got a second wind this year, but the reality was playing them stopped us putting games into some of the kids.

To the extent you're wrong, given we hadn't 'bottomed out' prior to the introduction of the GC and GWS, with mid-table finishes, and then low draft picks, courtesy of top four finishes, we also haven't had the luxury of better talent. In 2016 and 2017 we've also suffered from poor injury runs.

In short, I'm not convinced about our 'abject failure to develop and improve players' though I wouldn't 100% deny there may be some truth in it.

Why wouldn't we? Our membership levels are on a par or better than Dees, Dogs and Saints (when compared with similar ladder positions) and our debt is around $1M or less, which is a lot less than a lot of clubs, even when compared to revenue. We have cap space to either retain better players.

The only thing that makes this a 'real thing' is people like you, egged on by an antagonistic media, asking the question. We're here to stay. Tassie? We play as many games there as the Hawks.

tl;dr? If the Dees, Dogs and Saints can do it, so can we.

Completely different case when the player in question is still performing at a reasonably high level.

Harvey averaged 21.6 disposals and kicked 36 goals in 23 games for the 2016 season.

He would have been far more valuable than say Lindsay Thomas this season.

If he was cooked (ala Jonathan Brown 2014) then it might be a different story.

Would Boomer have won us the premiership this year? No.

It's been well documented that he and the others were not offered new contracts because they'd be taking away development opportunities from younger players. It was about more than 2017. Boomer wasn't happy initially, but has since said he understands the decision and he's at the club coaching. He, NM and life move on. But not sniping opposition supporters, eh?

Lindsay is under contract. Who knows, perhaps he too may have been let go if it wasn't the case? But he wasn't, he had a horror year and, as usual, he's the 'usual suspect'.

They pay each of the following guys the extra 1 mil they had set aside for Kelly/Martin and still back salary cap. Front loading the deals now is how you satisfy players wanting extra cash.

They made the right move trying to land an A grader to prevent the full rebuild but they don't need a full rebuild anyway because their list isn't crap. It's reasonably healthy and has some talent, and if the young talls come on they won't need to spend multiple draft picks there.

The instructions to the North recruiters really should be to find a lot of talented high upside players because their list is healthy. I'd have them somewhat similar to the Dogs in the Brendan McCartney era. Some gun draft picks - especially a Bont - and a bit of patience and they'll be in a good spot even if everyone thinks they are irrelevant and not going anywhere.

Well done. That's exactly what the thinking was in trying to land (simultaneously) Martin and Kelly. An instant injection of class in the midfield which is our biggest problem.

We didn't, so now, in the absence of similarly available talent >22 years of age (Martin was the talented outlier there), we go to the draft with exactly this approach in mind. If we again spend a year blooding the kids, and end up bottom four again, we are positioned to do this. We have a coach and a good number of players who have played and won finals, so we're not the worse positioned to remain competitive.

Look at this time last year and the comments about Richmond. A bit more midfield depth and a simpler game plan and they're doing okay. It's an even competition.
