Gold Coast currently have 4 picks in the second round this year. I think we might do pick 40 and our 2018 second rounder for a 2017 second round pick and Matera. Then trade that second round pick for Wilson.

They'll do as they see fit and the rest of us will remain onlookers, but with the reported quality of next years draft I don't want us trading next years picks.
I'd prefer to just wait 'til his contract expires at the end of next season.
Although as I say it's too hard to predict what they're thinking and what deals may be in the offing, you may be correct?

I just think Gold Coast will be looking for 2018 picks and will be looking to offload second rounders this year, and we are already going to be trading with them for Matera anyway. Plus we love swapping second rounders with them. Maybe we get a second rounder and hang on to it and try to get Wilson another way

I’d rather aim to get best possible 22 going into preseason and let the likes of Darcy and Cox continue their development next year with a balanced list. We might not need a KPF so urgently if those two continue in their development. If we get Matera and Wilson this year we could land on a playing list sweet spot that means we can compete more next year.

If Ryan and Wilson become our smaller backmen, our distribution from defense should significantly improve.
Which builds confidence from the midfield, letting the forwards cheat ahead of the ball to be in position for delivery inside fifty rather than expecting to have to contest the ball up the field.

What do we think back 6 would look like (ex Johnson)

Hughes Hamling pearce
Weller Ryan wilson

Our run and distribution looks electric!!!

Bennell will feel like a new signing. If we get to pick from a fully fit squad we're going to have a pretty good balance of grunt in the midfield (Fyfe, Mundy, Blakely, Neale) and speed/good disposal from back to front (Weller, Ryan, Wilson?, Hills x2, Walters, Bennell, Tucker).

If the word on the Wilson exit meeting is true the final compromise will definitely be GWS trading him to whichever WA club offers the most for him. Can Eagles swoop him? Will they? He's not the player worth shuffling or trading Pick 5 for.

Waldron on SEN reporting the rumour of Hogan won't go away and it may be in both parties best interest for him to go home

if we somehow end up with Matera, Wilson and Hogan I'll need resuscitation

I actually think Deboer improve his kicking and Barlow provide more freedom to ablett , swallow ,hall and lyod to shine .

Fyfe won a Brownlow with De Boer and Barlow in the side plus Freo played off in the GF and they both played in our best run of years. How you can say they have improved at their new clubs does not make any sense. You are constantly critical , its ok though because this is an opinion forum;)

Hogan stuff is seriously just people throwing around safe assumptions on his situation.

"I'm hearing xxx, Contracted, Loves xxx, 50/50 to go" - The logic that applies to every player and is being said by everyone.

Just need to protect them a bit and not get smashed in the midfield like this year
our midfield has struggled the last couple of years primarily through aging and injuryof our top four inner mids of our top 8 overall mids. That is why this draft is important for us in terms of getting at least two inside mids ala Dow, Rayner, Constable first pick, and later picks maybe get one of Ainsworth, Starcevich, Patmore, Shipley. Imop we only have Neil and Fyfe with Mundy not really able to go 4 quarters in that role anymore. Our four outsides are from B Hill, Weller, S Hill , Bennell and Walters and our four insiders at the moment are Neil, Fyfe and Blakely. Losing Balic means we need a replacement and we need another given Fyfe is more ruck roving around the ground (Deluca is a back up only). If we could get two top inside mids Freo will cut loose as it frees up Fyfe and Mundy and feed out to them and the outside mids. Ball delivery into the forward line much quicker and precise than what it has been. In my humble opinion;)

I agree with the potential upside you're describing, but I'll settle for a season with similar development to 2017,without the hammerings and a similar draft pick at the end of it.
Trade and draft well this season while getting more games into the youngsters and new recruits, finish a little higher up the ladder;then attacking the 2018 draft with decent picks plus academy selections, is how I see our list management giving us best chance to slowly claw our way back to top 4 and contention from 2020 and beyond.
That said with our recent improved recruiting and drafting I can't say I give it a lot of thought, fairly comfortable they'll get it done.

Scon in terms of the 2018 draft if our trading this year is somewhat dependent on planning for next years, then what is it about next years that we need to achieve. Are we talking Reilly, Hill Carter etc and what picks will we need to get them. It seems if next years is apriority then maybe we can do stuff all this year, even 5 may need to be traded for combination of 2017 second round and late 2018 1st round?[/QUOTE]

If we get those three players this year then we won't be entering the draft until Pick 80 if at all.

Personally I'm not looking into the Hogan stuff at all. Nothing even remotely concrete has come out about him. Just constant speculation buzz words.

That's ok

The problem for WCE is that by winning that final their second round pick is pretty ordinary. Currently pick 30 and likely to drop further, which isn't a great pick. Certainly not enough for Wilson. They also can't afford to lose or drop further than 13.

They have trading currency with say Gaff to a Melbourne club but I doubt they have balls to trade him out.

Their swooping powers aren't great IMO.

We need to get busy and inventive to either secure a 2017 pick in the mid twenties or give up our 2018 2nd rounder with the previso that we manage to get some 2018 3rd rounders back for points. Carter can be acquired for discount rate with points in the third and fourth rounds, which may move him up to a late 1st or second round pick.
