Nah we'll take Saad, thanks.

Kids from Lebanese backgrounds find it difficult to move far from home. Which is fine.

He'll come here, learn from Bolts, play great footy and he'll genuinely like it.

Get Mil Hanna to call his mum and dad, invite them down to "The Fitz" for some hospitality.

;)

Serious question. This time last year the 2017 draft was to be a super draft, yet here we are and it's an average draft... but next year, boy-o-boy, super draft!

Am I remembering this right? Always seems to be a super draft around the corner.

Yep it never ****ing ends. Always idiots spruiking about next year, then come august it's a shallow draft, next year is bumper

I think Saad might be genuinely homesick, not just on of these other guys who pack it in 3 or 4 years later after a Melb club offers more money. I met him and his family before his debut in Broadbeach the day of his debut, they seemed a great family and all so excited to see him play. Given his Lebanese background I would suggest he's genuinely finding it difficult being away from them, given it's so engrained in there culture.

Would love him at Carlton, watched him so many times at the Suns and he's a guy who puts people in the stands just to watch him play. Sure his disposal isn't always the best but that can be worked on, most of the time it isn't even his poor disposal that's the issue. It's that none of his team-mates have to work rate to see what he's doing and get themselves open, so often they job behind him and by the time he needs to get rid of the ball all his teammates are behind him and his only option is a contest or get it to space.

So when is Rockliff expecting to make a decision? Doesn't look good for us now
Would be nice to get him but if not we bring in more young talent

In a small way he is right... Draft picks + youth == sustained success.

SOS and the club has been tossing around the 66 game rebuild. I don't think that they see it the same way that Mal does... where we spend 3 years and 4 offseasons building up a core of young players, then taking another 2 years to develop them to the point where we start fighting for a top 8 spot.

I see the 66 game rebuild in two distinct areas that are running concurrently. Drafting and recruitment, led by SOS and training and development, led by Bolts. With all this going on at the same time, the core of guys we drafted, along with the guys we traded in who had a couple of years development under their belts already, from 2 years ago will make up the core of our ever expanding list of talented and experienced players... who mixed with a diminishing core of older experienced players will see us ready to start pushing for a finals berth or a spot just out of the top 8 in 2019.

Come the end of the trade and draft period next year, our rebuild will be over... guys like Weitering and Charlie Curnow will have 50-60 games worth of experience and that's going to be the start of the years of success for the club... and the trade and draft practices put into place by SOS will see us continue to grow and expand our list... and I can never see us needing to use top up players to fill holes in our list because we will have the continued stream of players through the club who will be able to step into the holes if any form.

Well said:thumbsu:

Used to see that last part a lot with Touhy.

Would run in seemingly ever decreasing circles on the D50 looking for an option that rarely presented.

Wouldn't come until next week I think, but we may get an indication tomorrow

We need to be a club that doesn't rely on high draft picks and we need a playing list that has an even spread of age and experience for it to be sustainable long-term.

It's not taking shortcuts or rushing the rebuild, it's part of it IMO.

Agree. Trading for young players and bringing only FA as players over 23 is just another way of rebuilding

Don't kill me... but Macreadie for Saad? seems like we are pretty well stocked for medium/tall defenders, especially with the surprise of Jones.
Not sure how many games Harrison will play over the coming years, will be tough to get him in the team.
Saad would start day one in a position where we don't have a lot of depth

I tend to agree that Malifice's radical rebuild plan is probably not the best path. We need to grow a good culture with strong leadership just as badly as we need to bring in young talent.
So the question really is what is worth more to Carlton, 2 years of Bryce's leadership or another top 10 pick (using pick 10 as a hypothetical). Quite difficult to say without draft knowledge but based on recent history I would say the pick. Obviously the guys making the decision are far more informed than I am.

Don't you know that any rebuild is a failure unless it accomplishes a dynasty? it's kids, kids, and only kids for first 3-4 years of a rebuild. if they die, they die (as Ivan Drago said) so no use for mature bodies to fill an age bracket we're sorely lacking in.

No way should we be offering Smith a 5 year deal. I'd be surprised (and disappointed) if the club did this.
My knees hurt thinking about it... would be daft and very suprising to offer that long to him. Should be 2 years at best.

Its sound enough logic. We simply cannot fit all of our talls into 22.
Be very interesting to be a fly on the wall in our list management meetings.

Nope

Macreadie will be best 22 in 2-3 years

Weiters might be up forward by then also

You only need 1 flag to call it a successful rebuild. But you give a team the best chance of winning that 1 flag if you set them up to contend for 4-5 years in a row.

Clubs like Geelong & Sydney have maintained a high level but they already had cores that only needed topping up.

We don't have that. Our best hope is to invest in youth & hope this current group can take us there. When Curnow & Cripps retire hopefully we can then be a club that maintains the high level and avoid complete rebuilds.

How would you like to die ?
