Realistically Poppy is pretty close to cooked - he was noticeably less effective this year in terms, although to be fair our forward line was pretty dysfunctional for a large part of the season. Given he is almost 30, if someone is willing to offer a multi year deal for him we owe it to let him decide what he wants to do.

What's happening in AFL is similar to what happened in cricket about 20 years ago - players are now able to physically play for longer (although not at peak performance). Part of the reason you had so many one club players in the 'old days' was everyone retired around 30 because they needed to support themselves - these days a lot play to 34-35 and earn enough coin to set themselves up for life.

They may not play for teams in the window, but the experience is invaluable to a team that either lacks senior players or is rebuilding. Lewis at the Demons is a great example and Poppy to GWS would be another one.

Poppy was injured this year.

Port fans don't rate Impey highly.
Hawk fans don't rate Doc highly.

Straight swap.

I would keep Doc rather than trade him for Impey. I don't think Impey is the type of player we need, unless the GW believes that we can improve is disposal efficiency and turn him into a handy player on a wing.

And looked pretty bloody handy in round 23. I wouldn't be writing off Poppy yet.

Agree. I find it interesting how underrated some of our players are, especially on the main draft board. They talk about the mosquito fleet at Richmond, but I think Poppy is as damaging as most of their mosquito’s, he’s explosive, tackles hard, can take a screamer, plays his guts out and kicks some pretty amazing goals. Unless we can get a fair return for him I would keep him.

I think the Poppy talk came through the early parts of the season when salary cap space was being estimated in light of Hodge and Gibbo being tipped to retire and there were a number of free agents like Fyfe and Dusty still available.

I see little reason to trade him unless there was a significant player of interest coming the other way.

Hawthorn has been very quiet on the trade front. Has there been any realistic talk about players?

we can go two ways here target a few young players or get a established gun.

h.balic should be high on our agenda. also try and pinch a.francis from essendon if they sign j.stringer on big bux.

or we could go all out and try entice westcoast a year early on the gaff contract.
next year first round pick plus a player would tempt them..

there only a couple of pieces missing to the puzzle.
bringing in two promising 20 -23 year old mid/fwd would be exciting .. to add to howe, burton, orourke, lovell,
so is the thought of bringing in another genuine midfield gun with dash . cross our fingers o'merea has a break out yr. that's 2 extra stars on last yr.

The list needs turnover.

A connected poster told us in this thread a while back that Poppy to GWS was organized back in july.

I don't disagree, but I wouldn't trade Doc for Impey. I would rather a draft pick, and I don't say that lightly. Impey has shown very little, in my opinion he has shown a lot less than Doc, that's my point.

Few players are indispensable, but there isn't any point in just trading out players unless we believe their replacements will improve our list. That said, I have faith in GW and Clarko, if they believe they can turn someone like Impey into a better player then so be it.

Worth remembering.

Impey is the sort of player Clarkson would love to sink his teeth into.

If we can get Impey for Doc we take it.

I thought he might still have indigestion induced by Vickery.
Vickery was insurance for Rough, which we ultimately didn't require(with help from TOB).

I reckon we may take a strategy of trading players out for future 2018 draft picks... next years draft apparently is very strong.
Personally don't think much will happen this year in terms of new players coming in.

I've heard that our recruiters think there are some real gems hidden in this draft.

Go hammer and tong after Rory Sloane if the rumours are true he wants to come home. What would we have to give up to get him? Dont think it would be possible but can dream of the possibility

Burton.

Do they want TOB?

A first and a second would be around the mark going off what they valued Gibbs at last season. No chance he leaves the crows though.

He doesn't. I can assure you of that.

Joel Garner interview coming up on Trade Radio, keen to hear him talk and see what he has to say. Hope he's someone we're looking at closely.

Any idea which players they have their eye's on? what picks would we require?
