You do realise how much cap space we have right. You wouldn't get near our price. Paid 95% of cap for 2 years straight. Not like we have anything to spend it on this year apart from Kennedy.

Sounds like great list management to overpay Sloane. I'm sure all that young talent you guys say you have will be happy to take unders to stay.

Just like how happy all the Melbourne players reportedly are at Lever becoming their highest paid player.

No, they won’t. They will bitch about recruiting a high priced cast off because our midfield is a shambles.

We will be ok, we certainly will not be worse off than this year. Our younger mids will be a year older, Cripps and E.Curnow will be back from injury, we will have Kennedy and a ready made mid at Pick3, I also expect us to pick up some depth mids through trades and RD to help us through.. you just need to take the longer term view beyond 2018.. worse thing is to panic and just stick to the rebuild

I don’t want Gibbs to leave. But if he does go I hope those here who have been pushing him out the door are quiet next year when we struggle to scrape together five or six wins.

Mate I don't want him to leave either. Unfortunately that has absolutely no bearing on what happens because if he does go, it will be because Gibbs is open to it and SOS wants the picks. It really is that simple.
Having traded out our tradeable "commodities" the past 2 seasons, we don't have much in the bank unless we start looking at our kids and we worked too bloody hard to get them in so that's not an option.
Gibbs, Murph, Kruse and Doc are our only established players capable of generating picks/trades that will assist our rebuild.
Gibbs is the one it seems all parties are comfortable to move on and generate those picks.

I’m with you. Unfortunately the vocal minority Blues supporters may not be. We all know them. Most screaming for SOS to do 15 trades in the first day and waiting for the next Judd deal to save us.

This is not the same Blues we knew of yester-year. Take a look at our membership numbers. We have some very fickle supporters.

We will front end the deal so won't be overpaying, Ade will be unable to match. Now jog on!

But that’s the thing there’s no indication that Gibbs is open to it other than speculation. And show me evidence that we are ‘comfortable’ with moving on Gibbs given McKay said earlier this week that it wasn’t on the agenda.

Yes SOS never blinks. And I’m sure there’s all sorts of stuff happening behind the scenes, but at the moment all the talk is fuelled by the media and us fans. The actual parties have said nothing.

All true but it will be a sad day to see Gibbs leave...i think in his heart he's a Carlton man and what SHOULD have happened is if our previous administration weren't so hopeless, players like him, Murph, Simmo, Kreuz would have gotten to enjoy some finals success with us AND players like Betts, Jacobs, Tuohy & yes Hendo should all still be with us as part of a strong Carlton team.

But because the previous administration were a joke, SOS has had to re-shape the list and aggressively rebuild and trade out some of these players that have currency. Although absolutely the right decision by SOS, it's sad that Tuohy didn't want to leave and we essentially pushed him out...he obviously loved the club and was grateful we gave him his chance at AFL footy. Will be the same for Gibbs.

Yeah agree it is fuelled by media and fans and how this turns out nobody really knows other than the parties involved. That's the fun (and frustration) of tradeweek I suppose!

Mate I can't disagree with any of that. :thumbsu:

Adelaide have a wide open Premiership 'window' - right now. Their disgraceful performance in the GF against the tuggers will serve them well in 2018 and remind them that no one gets a flag 'handed to them' - irrespective of H&A performances. What do they need to remain a genuine contender and maybe get a flag ?

Well for starters they need to shore up the loss of Lever down back and make up for the loss of Cameron. Both can be worked around they have the depth to plug the holes there.

What they don't have is a midfield capable of matching the heat of a GF against a willing opponent. Adelaide have a very good midfield - but not one that is better than even the tuggers playing a two way game. I would think that Gibbs brings a lot of footy smarts and genuine class to the table for Adelaide and the asking price of a decent pick and a player or a decent first rounder and a second rounder is not ridiculous - he easily has 3-4 years of top class footy left in him - which is why Carlton won't be handing him over for nothing liek Malthouse did with Eddy Betts - no way SOS would have fallen for the PSD threat from Jacobs - but that is another story.

OR

Adelaide can stockpile picks and go to the draft with a treasure chest - they are in a pretty good position as a list for the next few years and the Lever picks plus Cameron picks can set them up for many years to come with kids needing development and time - doesn't 'speak' to winning a flag(s) now though does it?

I've always been very critical about Gibbs' career at Carlton, at points I think he's a very handy midfielder who can really use the ball efficiently but some games I just think he's abit soft and not really the kind of player that can will a team to victory. If the deal is good for Gibba I think we should take it, and use those picks further to invest in the future. Considering his age and where he's at in his career with us in a full rebuild mode I think it's a good decision to move him on.

That’s true - though less fun and more frustration. I agree with those that say that 9 days is 5 days too many.

The fact that the rumours were so off the mark last year re Gibbs - how many times did we hear that the trade was a lock!? - has increased my scepticism about a thousandfold. And this year there’s less to gone on than last year.

Exactly and i think Reid and the Crows have come to the understanding that having 5 first round picks in the next 2 years isn't very productive for them right now...they also have Gallucci, Milera, Poholke, Doedee & Keath to come into the side next year...none of them made the Grand Final team.

It would be a waste to have so many talented kids sitting in the SANFL. Best to trade a few picks for Gibbs for their premiership tilt next year.

Crows supporters on the other hand don't seem to get it. At all.

Short term pain for some long term gain.
Gibbs would be unlikely to still be at his best when we are challenging again.

Take the Carlton glasses off. Those picks would be pretty much spot on fair. Gives us plenty to trade with too.
Thank God you’re not in charge of recruiting, take your myopic glasses off.

Pick 16 in 2014 got you Sam durdin - look thru history of pick 16s and quite often shocking,

I said it last year and will say it again for Gibbs you would need a top 5 pick at least, plus extras. Pick 16 isn’t anything to write home about, next year’s draft is far better. We have Gibbs under contract, we need midfield depth ... that is unless you are happy with 10-15 goal smashing every week as without Gibbs we would rely on just two a grade midfielders.

Organic growth.

People were asking us the same questions about Dangerfield leaving and he's better than those two combined.
?

From where, though?

With all due respect, who's going to step into Lever's void? Where are you going to get the A grade mid - or two/three B-B+ mids, which would almost be better for you lot - you need to take your midfield up a notch or two?

Let's face it, Adelaide whilst very good at transitioning the ball from defense to attack have a good midfield, not a great one. Sure, you can quote stats at me till to cows come home, but it doesn't change that Adelaide - this incarnation of it, at least - has huge issues when beaten up around the ball by larger bodied opponents.

You know who's used to that sort of thing? Gibbs.

Anyway, i'm not here particularly to start an argument. I just hear the sort of unfounded optimism - which, I will admit, you have significantly more basis for than we have, based on the immediate past - from Adelaide supporters fairly frequently, and I can't for the life of me see why.

Because he's contracted you have to pay more. The entire industry understands that.
Or maybe look a little closer to home. Charlie Cameron wants to go to Brisbane, and they'll have to pay overs to get him.
Works both ways.

Doedee will step into Levers void just fine as the intercepting defender. Will be a downgrade in the short term but in the long term makes us less top heavy plus gives us important pace.

Brad crouch will take another step up next year, it'll be the first time he's had an uninterrupted run at a pre-season and he was already showing signs of his talent towards the end of this year. Gallucci and Milera will both have another year of development to step into Camerons shoes.

Crows won’t get anywhere near a grand final. Losing grand finalists in 18 team comp rarely get second chance eg freo, West Coast. In 14 team comp bit different.

Difference is that Brisbane have offered Cameron double the salary he has at the Crows to get him and are clearly willing to do what it takes to get him.

We proved last year we're happy to leave Gibbs at Carlton if the price isn't to our liking.
