Trade radio just said Weller unlikely to be traded this season
I'm not that surprised. He left it way too late to tell Freo of his request to go to the GC. Our entire list management and drafting strategy would've been based on having Weller next year. Pick 2 would probably fix that, but if GC aren't going to come to the table, then we may as well keep him & spend the year making plans for a future without Weller.

Definitely a bitter pill to swallow. Some of the language used in the media, and Melbourne giving him only one year seems to indicate that the industry has genuine concerns he won't come good.

Yes , the inuendo is there is still significant risk. While disappointed I would think we already have a targeted player somewhere in the leagues ALA Ryan who we may get and be at least serviceable to the club and even go okay (Kelly, Schloithe, Broomhandle -thought I'd throw that one in).

Looks like we will get pick 2 for Weller, So 2 top 5 Vicco kids. You beauty.

Hey, kick arse. It has no effect on us.:thumbsu:

I personally reckon you would be better off keeping 5 and landing 18 & 20 or something like that.

You would still get a very good player at 5, and get another solid proposition and land one of the top two seeded W.A. boys with 18 & 20.

I'm thinking this as part of the overall trade strategy for the last 24 hours...
Taking Weller off the table means no 2017 first or second rounder, which kind of forces GWS's hand to accept 2018 second rounder. Once that deal's done, waddya know, the Weller deal is back on and we stand firm with two first rounders or pick 2. Gold Coast having history of blinking first, give up pick 2 and Matera for Weller and 41.

We're not getting pick 2 guys

Look I don't mind it.
They pay the price or we keep him and our four year deal in front of him.
If he still wants to go we trade him for a first or second in next year's super draft.

Tactically a good move

I like the stance by Freo.

If it doesn't happen this trade period we'll probably flick him off for a 2nd rounder next year which is still ok.

Agreed. He won't suddenly drop to worthless next year. We'll get a decent return for him and in a better draft if nothing happens this year.

The worst thing that can happen to Gold Coast is they don't make the trade, Weller thinks a bit more about it over the next 12 months and signs the extension here.

Public. Relations. Nightmare.

2nd Worst thing is that a Melbourne club decide they want him too and his family decide to stay where they are, he moves to Melbourne instead.

Freo and GC will make it happen.

We still need to satisfy GWS for Wilson so the Weller to GC scenario is now crucial for this to occur (unless GWS accepts a swap of future picks which they have already knocked back). Also we have to get Matera in.

This trade really does need to happen, as much as Lloyd would like everyone to think we have control, we have committed to getting Wilson and Matera to the club, and this will help us facilitate that.

The ball is really in Gold Coasts court. They have assured Weller and his manager that they will get the deal done so they either over pay and get him or they dont and he stays, in that case Weller you think would lose a lot of faith in Gold Coast and be pretty annoyed at them for saying one thing but not delivering.

In all honesty i would have thought it is in Gold Coasts best interests to use pick 2 to get him. Otherwise they will more than likely select another Vic Metro kid that requests a trade home in 2-3 years time rather than spending it on an A grade talent that actually wants to be there.

Yes and no. We have Weller that has said he doesn't want to stay in Perth long term. He'll play out 2018 without issue before leaving. Matera for scraps. He's just not that good. GWS won't want Wilson doing a McCarthy and sitting out a year. He's committed to leaving, has publicly bought a house near the training facility etc. GWS are in a much more difficult situation than us. Lloyd and Bond know we're sitting with a good hand here and they're playing it well so far.

To those saying he'll lose value if we keep him for a year, Jake Lever was out of contract and Adelaide still got two first rounders, Jeager O'Meara got a first and second rounder and those are just two off the top of my head.

My money is on Clayton blinking (and being 'encouraged' by the AFL) to give up pick 2.

Nobody seems to be questioning the reported $$$s they've offered him. If you are paying $5m over 4 then you have to pay something like pick #2 - he's not a free agent and if he was that'd get us equivalent compo. I don't get why people are so shocked at us requesting #2, picks in the 20s are pretty awful in this draft comparatively.
