Johnson will retire soon and A Pearce may not recover. Freo aren't exactly stacked with key backs

Posters have been getting excited over players which many have admitted to have only watched a few brief highlight packages.

I dont include Johnson in any discussions, I dont even want him getting a game this year unless every other option is exhausted. I dont think you can use pick 5 on a player because the guy we've had marked as a 10 CHB might not make it back. Fyfe and Barlow made good returns after finding their feet for 6 months and I fully expect the same the happen to Pearce. I think their is an opportunity cost with something as valuable as pick 5 and taking Naughton would be a safe approach that gets us no where. Take the risk that Pearce will fully recover and continue on his pre-injury projections which allows us to boost other areas which are more of a need (with players rated higher than Naughton I might add). In any case, if Pearce doesnt get back on the park we can move Cox back there, who, despite what some people like to think was drafted as a key back

I agree - A.Pearce will likely spend the first part of the year at Peel and giving games to Johnson early in the year is a smart move to allow Pearce time to get conditioned to AFL.

Case and point is O'Reilly. Half of this board have him penciled in as a 300 game, 600 goal KPF when in reality nobody (well maybe somebody does) here has any idea if he is actually good or if he will even get to Freo. I know he is not in any of the rankings for u17 players at the moment. Obviously those lists tend to change but 1st round KPFs usually have plenty of hype around them by this stage.

Coincidentally I was just looking at how O'Reilly could potentially fit in a future depth chart He had a break out this season after the various u18/u17 teams etc were worked out so didn't really get much of a look in - whereas the SA boys, King twins, Hill etc have been showing dominance in u16s and prior.

O'Reilly will already be on all AFL club radars after topping the Colts goal kicking tally as a bottom ager this year (it's pretty impressive when you think about it) but I'm not expecting the media to pick up on him much until they start talking next year's u18s. I suspect he'll be a key piece of the WA u18s team next year but no guarantees. Also expecting him to be draft bolter based on watching him live but he's got a fair bit of work ahead of him still. He didn't play a game this season (19 games including two WAFL League games) where he didn't kick at least one goal. That kind of consistency is friggin awesome imo. And his bags of 7 and 5 goals shows he can dominate when given an opportunity. Watching him live two things stood out: his presence inside 50, and how smart he was as a tall forward (working with the other forwards and mids). Gut feel says his endurance is below par atm. And relating to that he's probably more a stay at home full forward currently and not your typical CHF type that seem to be sought after at draft. Will be tough watching him develop again next year knowing we were only two games short of f/s. Would love him to succeed even if he doesn't end up at Freo.

Yeah I know but I really think he is cooked, Spurr should be even further away from the team so no argument there. Seems like a perfect time to play Cox down back if Pearce needs some WAFL games to find his feet

Day 1 of Pre Season is before the draft from memory. If Alex Pearce is there day 1 and running laps, then it's a great sign. If hes in good nick, it could be a sign that hes ready to go, so no need for Naughton. If Pearce gets most of the pre season in, bookmark him for Round One.

Just gone back over each players clips etc this evening and only on the 2018 nab highlights and comparing them I think there is a clear line emerging for me. In those it is unfortunate that Fogarty and Cerra both were not 100% match fitness for different reasons yet performed quite well. They would have been much better injury free and a good preseason like Dow Rayner, LDU and Stephenson. So here goes

1 Rayner by a whisker over Dow - both consistenly good across most areas throughout the championships. They are both the best inside mids going only on the highlights imop.(Rayner is so good to watch though...man i hope we get him).

3 Davies Uniacke...the perfect all rounder Judd like - his only blemish was the game against WA. Was shown up several times under WA's pressure, closing in speed and tackling.

4 Stephenson ...Looks a bit ungainly at times but he really did not put a foot wrong and has lots of upside. Consistent and has all aspects to his game.

5 Fogarty and Cerra both exceptional talents with all round games but who were not able to show us the consistency of such talented players during
2017. Dont think we could lose on either quite frankly but I dont think we would see either make their 2018 debut without a really good preseason and no interuption with minor injuries.

6. Higgins has been highly underated as a top quality by mst of us here I suggest. Very quick with hands, good on both sides, inside mid as well as forward opportunist. He could be a surprise pick and would not disappoint. Coffield is the other at 6 and has been the "fit Fogarty" so to speak" so say no more.

7 Brayshaw sits in about here with quite a few others imop. He really has a footy brain and matches it with his skills.

So for me Rayner and Fogarty. If the cards don't fall right for that, Dow and Fogarty/Uniacke

But we picked up Sandilands in the 2002 rookie draft, and you know who went at pick #2 that year? Daniel Wells - drafted from Peel. So we should only draft talls in the rookie draft unless they are midfielders from Peel at #2

Anyone else think the professional environment of the TAC cup could be a negative in the long term
So these young fellas step pretty much into a AFL club simulation , the training , the diet , the game tactics etc
After a couple of years of this these guys are pretty close to AFL ready and all look the goods in their draft year , the recruiters look at them and at the young WAFL or SANFL players and even to their experienced eye they just look superior so obviously draft accordingly
BUT after a few years and the development imbalance has been rectified it turns out quite a few of those TACo’s were not all they were cracked up to be

Then why argue something that is not that bad , is not like you can't draft mid at later pick or guarantee one over the other. Peoples here are making stuff like drafting KPP over a mid is such a big deal , there is a reason every team had 44 players in AFL competition . I don't care who Freo Pick at 2 and 5 but in two years time their performance should at least be equal to GC Weller and pick 40 .

Beware the bolter. Is it because of long term potential or short term success? Similarly for sliders. Is it due to short term failure or a worsening long term outlook?

If the answer is the first choice of each of those questions then draft away. If it's the second I'd find a better alternative.

This here is the problem. If he wasnt from WA (Peel in particular) this wouldnt even be a discussion. The only reason there are some people on here who want him so badly is because they have seen him live over any of the other available proposed top 10 picks. For the record, most of us who DONT want him fully expect him to be a 200 game player from what we've seen. It's that he doesnt fit our list at the moment which is stacked for young KPD's that project as terrific players and that using pick 5 on a spot where we are covered seems redundant.

Good write up , I like Higgins still think GwS or bulldog are the team that will bring out the best in him . Will you do a write up on KPP also ,my top 3 Ballenden , Brander and Naughton .

Rayner on SEN this morning is sticking to the managed line, ‘happy to go anywhere but prefer to stay home.’ Sounds like he’s managed by Connors so you’d assume the messaging is crafted to not be tampering but clear on intention. Will be interesting to see whether the Club maintains the line to go with the best available regardless of his flight risk and backs itself to retain him once in the system. Or whether its trading philosophy of luring local boys home plus the recent Weller and Balic experiences have had some influence in the decision making. They have ignored the go home factor when recruiting to date so interesting to see if they hold their nerve given the recent history.

I think our main focus at pick 2 will be addressing our lack of pacey inside mids so for me it comes down to Rayner, LDU or Dow.

That's 2 Vic Country and 1 Vic Metro and I think we'll favour the country boys slightly over Rayner. So if Bris go LDU we'll take Dow.
If they go Dow we'll go LDU.
If they take Rayner we've got a tough choice but will probably go LDU???

I'm also not convinced the go home factor will influence Brisbane's decision too much. Last year they had Ben Ainsworth literally come out and say he hopes that Brisbane pick him up, and they went for the higher rated Vic Metro mid in McLuggage
