whats ridiculous is the widespread control that religious institutions have over the modern world, which should be moving towards secularism and unity

Faith gave people comfort in simpler times. It wasn't that long ago (2500 years, give or take) people thought the Earth was flat, so any idea that is hundreds or thousands of years old should be subject to scrutiny regardless of who came up with it.

The problem with organised religion is the attitude of 'I'm Christian/Muslim/whatever therefore I go along with this/that/the other'. Something that seems to be off limits as far as religion/faith goes is Aboriginal mythology. The dreamtime is a bunch of nonsense but the stories are cool and the culture of the people is 40,000 years old compared to our 200 odd years since European settlement so people don't go around saying 'well actually that's bullshit' like they do with creationists.

At a social get together on the weekend. Met a chap who was involved in a robust discussion about everything. Not a left sided person by any stretch with words like "lefties, snowflakes, do gooders, bleeding hearts" thrown around.

Topics included immigration, muslims (restriction of both), ALP and their violent supporters and the SSM yes result (swear he was red as a beetroot then).

I snuck in with a little jab "many of the NO voters came from migrant areas who are of conservative nature".

The notion of why people in the past and less educated societies beleived in gods is not ridiculous. In fact science has shown us why humans are prone to believe in made up gods . However science has also shown us that gods do not exist and given people in western socieites have both this knowledge and the knowledge of why humans are prone to believe in made up gods then it does seem ridiculous how so many of the population continue to still believe in them. Its like a magician has shown us how a magic trick is an illusion and we still continue to believe the magic is real.

Being hit by a bicycle doing 40-50 km/h is pretty serious. Doesn't happen that often, but a lot of cyclists are dicks when it comes to picking and choosing when they want to use the road and when they want to use the footpath.

Also pedestrians are zombies. It's common to ride along a dual use pathway with no one around and ample room for everyone and see pedestrians walking 4 abreast, or just single file but randomly snaking all over the place as they get a new high score on Candy Crush. If I ride my bike on a dual use pathway I try to give pedestrians as wide a berth as possible to account for unpredictable movement.
