Still puzzling

Doubt anyone with a serious football IQ would consider Franklin as the best ever
Best ever Indigenous player maybe? Not many better.

Bit over the top, personally would have mcleod and a few others up there before Buddy.

Fantastic player but not in the best category
Edited .
Buddy is awesome. Attracts attention like no other player since GAS. Can win games off his own boot so regularly. Has done so for ages. I've watched footy for over 54 years now. Buddy surpasses anybody (Indigenous) that has been named in my time, but each to his own opinion.

Farmer was the best player of his era, indigenous or otherwise.
Franklin hasn't been.
Franklin might or might not have been the best indigenous player of his era; it depends upon how you rate Goodes.
He's arguably on the 2nd level (after Farmer) of all-time great indigenous players, with Goodes, McLeod and Cable.
(And maybe Stephen Michael, impossible to assess him in the absence of AFL/VFL experience).

Felt a bit like some of our games last year, in that if it went for another 10 minutes then Sydney probably start really running over the top and get the clear win. As it was they left it too little to late when all was said and done.

What a mess the standard of this competition is.

Couldn’t disagree more. Sydney had four quarters to win the game, same as Adelaide. Plus it was at their home ground, and Adelaide had a ton of players out. They just weren’t good enough. No excuses.

Not sure how one upset proves the standard of the competition is poor either.

I think Buddy is certainly the best player of the last 10 years easy, and by far the best player right now but not even close to best of all time.
People have short memories.
Yeah maybe best indig in the AFL era. McLeod, Goodes & Wanganeen were allright too.
Polly prob best ever.
Edit: Oh yeah Matera too. Come to think of it even in the AFL era not sure he's even the best Indij player.

Thought the Crows were clearly better.
As soon as they got that goal to go 27 up I was like look out for the frees to make a game of it now.
Then Bang next centre bounce, Straight away Bullshit free kick then repeated till Sydney got all the momentum.

I wasn't saying that Sydney deserved to win, suspect you've misinterpreted my point.

They had a lackadaisical approach at the start of the game, especially in the middle while Adelaide were desperate. They reminded me of us last year in terms of only starting to turn up towards the end, such that if the last quarter kept going they probably would have hit the front.

Sure they weren't good enough on the night, but thats not a qualitative comparison of how good the two teams should have been in a vacuum. That's why it feels like the standard is a mess, average effort is so down that trying can seriously stand out.

Of course.
I'm only suggesting what the original comment was about - suggesting Buddy was GOAT player, I suggested he may have meant indigenous, and the person who made the comment has possibly never heard of the Big Cat.
In my time of following footy, I did see Polly, and he had a huge impact on me- even came to our school to teach us handball- but his impact in Victoria was relatively short-lived. Over his whole mega career, he was likely the #1 Indigenous player. There are some who say he is the GOAT.

I think that’s just the nature of sport. Every now and again a side lifts and works harder than the opposition. It happens all the time. It shouldn’t be forgot that Adelaide are a pretty good team too. They’re far from a list of plodders.

Last night was a really average Adelaide team, though. No Sloane, Crouches, Betts, Smith (although he's been out all year and will remain so). That's probably 5 of their best 8 including 3 of their best 4 mids. Huge outs.

That's roughly the period in which Ablett has polled Brownlow votes in nearly 40% of the games he's played, and been voted BOG in almost 20% of the games he's played.

I think Buddy is better than Lil Gaz. Just my opinion. Know it's not popular on here.
If you could go back in time and draft either at the same time, Who would you pick?

It's not just people on here who disagree with you, it's also the Umpires, Players and Coaches - but what would any of them know.;)

In answer to your query, I would have been doubtful about drafting either; Ablett hadn't shown any signs of his future greatness; Franklin had shown more of his talent, but there were many who doubted his discipline and dedication. But if forced to choose, I would have chosen Franklin on what was known at that time; and Ablett if I'd been able to foresee the future.

No I was talking about if you could magically go back in time and know what you know now. Who would you pick?

Buddy.
Ablett is better IMO and will be remembered as such but let's be honest, elite midfielders are far more regular than elite key forwards, and then you have Buddy whose not only a damn good forward but he's quick, agile and has amazing goal sense. He's a freak and I'd take him over anyone else in the comp if you go back to the start of their careers.

Never saw Polly play so I couldn’t really comment on him, from what I’ve heard and the little footage I have seen he had a massive influence on the game and is one of the few I would rank above Buddy if we were strictly talking about indigenous players.

Opinions and all of that

Yeah I would go the same. Also Buddy & Gaz hit their straps in the same year and Buddy is still the best in the comp and probably will be for the next 1 or 2 years.
Also how many players have kicked 100 in a year in the last 10-15 years.
