Traded Braydon Preuss [traded with #62 to Melbourne for Tyson]

Depends if another team promises him a #1 ruck role for next season and a raise, similar to what Sydney did with Mumford.

Munford was out of contract Preuss isn't.

He's been quiet for a few weeks, but broke out v Pittonet on saturday.

Still needs to work on his palm work.

Yeah, how about your club actually develops some footballers for a change rather than continually topping up with other clubs players?

Mate we've played 4 debutants this year (not including Crameri in this) 2 of whom have come off the rookie list and we are consistently playing a heap of other sub 30 gamers most weeks (Cunico Guthrie and others among it and we'll bring in more sub 30 gamers with Esava out). We have played stacks of sub 30 gamers the last 3 years. We are doing plenty of player development.

North would be mad to trade Preuss with Goldstein nearly 30 and both are contracted. I don't see it.
Yea, won’t happen. Pruess knows that goldy is almost done.

I get that, all clubs have to draft players, I am referring to a root and branch rebuild, which is what you should have done the moment it was obvious the threepeat era was over.

I see Geelong making similiar list development mistakes as what North did in the post Carey era. You're plugging up holes whilst slowly regressing.

We don’t do that type of rebuild. Cook and Wells have spoken about their belief it’s not something that clubs need to do.

We won’t do what you’re professing.

Come again?! What do you think primed your triple premiership era?

Answer: Exactly that type of rebuild. 99 & 01 + a sprinkling of F/S's made your club.

We've had no pick higher than 7 in the last 20 years. Haven't had more than 3 years consecutively without finals, haven't finished below 12th and haven't bottomed out.
That's not what you were intimating. It was the Blues/Tigers 5+ years down the bottom method, a stance our recruiter has made clear is not one we see as necessary.

We will continue to do what we've done for over 3o years. Strive for nothing less than finals each season.

You never needed a pick higher than 7 under the old F/S rule.

I am not suggesting tanking or sacking every player 28 and over, I was referring to heavily investing in youth once it became clear that threepeat list had run it's race.

The Judd trade proved ultimately futile for Carlton and I strongly suspect the Dangerfield trade will go the same way with Geelong.

if making 8 spots out of 18 is your bar for success, then good and well to you. I prefer having a realistic crack at winning the flag.

Then you will go down the same path you followed for 40 years prior to undertaking a root and branch rebuild. Failure. You appear to be copying the Adelaide model, and that means you need to get lucky in a poor season to salute.

I am not even slightly fazed. This ship has a very good driver at the wheel.
A driver that has us 8pts off being the best defence after 10 rounds despite no Henderson, Lonergan, Taylor and Mackie from last year.

So long as Stephen Wells is in charge there is zero to be worried about.
This rebuild path isn't the panacea that everyone thinks it is. Clubs often stuff it up and have to restart from scratch and in the process spend over a decade in the mire.

I really dont know why you would say Goldy is just about done, He looks to be over his niggles and personal issue's and playing good football now
Goldy will be 30 in july and has another 3 years min in my opinion and could play until he is 35 he is extremely durable playing 200 games in 10 years

Think you guys are writing him off way too early due to having Pruess but Goldstein is a quality Ruckman that still has a fair bit of football left to go

I think you are arguing against yourself here. By bringing FSon into in it.. it goes against the argument of we should be going back to the draft ref. what we did last time. Yes the rule were different .. and certainly Hawkins and Selwood would not happen now..but for a club to get FS.. you have to have FS to pick and develop. Id don't see the FS coming thru that we had back then. We several talls and I do not see that this time.

Dangers trade is closer to Ottens than Judd. As much as we went to draft last time.. it was the recruitment of a Ruck from another club that probably put the icing on the cake. The Judd trade ended up hurting Carlton because they traded a player who has become a champ at WC...where as the Ottens trade really did not hurt us... and Rich had no luck with the picks either.

The fact is for every club that does this "root and branch" rebuild there are several clubs that just never ever have success from the gutting of their list. While once it was the only method..certainly going back to 99/01 it was pretty much "the" method.. now with player movement more fluid its not as simple as dump old players and go to draft.. go backward ..get better picks ..and then on the j curve come back. The last rebuild had us being in the bottom group over several years 99 thru 06..it also worked better because in truth our recruitment and development was better than a lot of other clubs. Plenty had better choices than us and made little of them. Generally more clubs are better at the process now.

As shown we have had plenty of youth , some of it unexpectedly talented and we have at times traded out to go the draft Caddy into Parfitt.
The only way we could do much better than we have is to get a lot of earlier picks..and finish closer to the bottom. Its probably what Carlton has done. Its probably what the Saints has done. StK is an interesting comparison .they show that doing it hard going to draft , getting early picks etc doesn't always give you the outcome you want.

I think your main gripe is Geelong were mentioned in trading in your ruckman. Ironically Id probably look at other options before trading for him..and id like to add a young ruck to have at least one developing ruckman on our list.

There's no "gripe"

My opinion is based upon watching 4-5 generations of football teams evolve and analysing the patterns. I get the suspicion you are too young to know any better.

Can you provide any examples that lapsed premiership era topping up has been successful in winning premierships?

Bit left field but what about Tomlinson? Dont think of you needing talls but he does have a tank and legspeed. Can play KPD wing or H/B runner.

He's right Cook and Carter (who was on the afl comission) are vocal opponents of the equalisation go down to go up strategy, Geelong won't pursue it by choice while they are at the club.

It's either that or tread water for the next 20 years.

Just ask Adelaide.

preuss got destroyed by a 17 year old from the ais academy earlier in the year, I’d rather just use a pick on the kid

"Destroyed"

You're referring to Bailey Williams.

For the Roos, ruckman Braydon Preuss was physical and won the ruck battle as expected, gathering 14 disposals to go with his 31 hit-outs and five clearances, while Mitch Hibberd had 20 touches.

My mate works for north and was at the game and at the club during the week. Said that preuss got a massive spray for his performance and was really poor
