If Wines was an AFC player he would have left after his 1st contract.

That's because we keep clinging to a failed payment structure.

It may work over in Geelong, but to keep guys in SA you have to pay overs.

We've all known this for a while, but the club seems to have not woken up and realised it.

It's so obvious why we keep middle tier players their whole career while we struggle to keep the top tier players. Middle tier players are clearly being paid way too much and they stay because they're on better money than they would get at most other clubs, unfortunately by doing that we're robbing Peter to pay Paul because we then don't have the salary to spend overs to keep top tier players.

We bank on player loyalty.

Player loyalty worked before the salary explosion, but it gets tested when players are offered 15-20% more.

LOL

Impey was a walk up start to your side and even Hinkley said that he wanted him to stay. Impey went for a better deal at the Hawks

If Port didn't need a player of Impey's ilk then why are Port playing Motlop 650-700k a year ?

Around $500k according to the articles I'm looking at, the Crows were the ones offering over $600k

No other club offered him the captaincy I’d be thinking
The one thing they learnt from Shaun Burgoyne defection
I’m glad he’s staying

He’ll plateau the same all Ports good youngsters do

Yep, the new CBA was like real life. We still think it's the 80's and have a fat middle class. It's gonna change where 25-30% of your cap might go to 2-3 players and then you'll have a bunch of guys making the minimum to fill out the list.

Not according to the compensation you received.

You blokes love a good Victorian conspiracy, right?

Gary Ablett wants to return from the Suns to the Cats. Cats and Suns struggling to agree on a trade. AFL realises how bad a look it would be if one of the best players of all time was held to his contract with the Suns against his will, or worse still decided to sit out the last year of his contract. AFL sees an opportunity to give Geelong something to work with, uses their intentionally vague and secret free agent policy to award #19 to Geelong for Motlop. Next minute #19 is traded to the Gold Coast and Ablett is a Cat again.

Or it could just be as simple as Motlop used the Crows to up your offer the same way Wines would have used Melbourne teams to do the same.

Just like Lever did with us, just like McGovern did too.

If you're comparing compensation then we must be paying him as much as Sydney are paying Buddy, or you know....... the AFL just make shit up as they go along
The last bit I do agree with, but I'm still not overly sure Motlop would have earned more money with us.

who needs wines when you have david mackay.
