Not really as we won a flag with him playing that role Jack suggested tonight.
Was it stupid that we won the flag last year with Townsend and we are favourites to win it this year and Townsend could still play a role??
I think your post is probably closer to the mark of a reflection of your football ignorance as you missed the point I made in the entirety of the post by singling out a sentence. I’m not a no for Lynch , but dubious on whether he will benefit us long term.

Last night during the game they asked Tom Brown who he thinks Lynch will go to. He pretty much said Collingwood is "only just ahead". This response tells me he's only guessing without any solid ground.

Regardless, with Lynch going in for surgery, his club of choice will know for certain within a week or two, if they don't already. It may not be official in public, but will likely be known behind closed doors. If we know that we are not his preferred option, then it's best to quickly move on and come up with a alternative plan for the trade period.

When you have the likes of Castagna and Rioli flying for the ball that are better players on the ground it reduces the need for the likes of a Lynch type. Helps with JR doing his thing naturally. There are other cheaper options though like a Roughhead from Hawks or a Kruzeur as UFA in 2019 providing better value as role players fitting in a team game and giving more forward options to the mids.

I think we can get away without a Lynch type on big money.

CCJ, and Balta are showing enough plus the others like Moore and even Miller has potential along with Chol.

If we got De Goey it might be better and I would keep Townsend regardless as he suits our mix where he can play a role he probably cannot play in any other team

That’s the way I see it. You only have to watch our vfl side and you can see the tall power potential is abundant , but see that midfield potential is bare.

I see Lynch as a unnecessary risk. Makes more sense , gives us structural flexibility and gives us a lot more versatility chasing the likes of Sloane, Murphy, Gunston and a host of other players when it suits as UFA.

Even a Roughhead from the Hawks who appears to be slowing in a dominant position could be handy for us in a hybrid defence as well as in the guts at times along with forward. He could give Nankervis a chop out before Balta and others like Chol and CCJ are ready to take the challenge at the highest level and win another flag or to in a better team in the process.

While this happens we add to our recent draft successes as well to support our next generation in Graham, Higgins, Balta etc... and co

I understand that but teams are about balance and not everyone needs to be absolute in how similar they can contribute and be effective. What you are suggesting makes Roughhead a value option but I think like Townsend he could play a temporary role as a chop out for Nank, assisting in defense and being a matching/contest focal point forward and as a link player centrally where speed is not super critical due to positioning because he has enough skill and class despite his age and condition to be effective as a role player in a premiership team I think. Put it this way, if Roughhead is the teams weakest link for a year or so the team is not that bad! The likes of Moore would not have the size to play the role asked of Roughead if he were to come in like if a CHF or ruck position. If Roughhead could play a Mitchell type role but as a big ruck/KPP player instead of a pure mid I think he could be handy in our set up before the youngsters come on. If the youngsters step up and progress ahead of time good luck to them they earn their spot!!

How much coin would he demand? Suppose if it was minimal wages on two years it wouldn’t be so tough bc you could drop him for a Towner Moore Chol or co. if it didn’t work out.

Have to be low wages now. I don't know, 200K maybe somewhere in that vicinity for 2019. Not sure what the asking price would be but it would only be for a year, possibly another. I think its unrealistic to offer 2 years. One year with strong goodwill of 2(offer another year after the first) if he earns it would be fair I think

Towner was wonderful last year, he hit a purple patch of his career to coincide with a great finals run, but he aint a better option than Lynch even if we won a flag with him. This season has proved how limited he is as a footballer as the majority of the squad goes to another level.

Also imagine Jack without the pressure of a 2nd defender constantly, he came into the game a smart footballer and he is getting smarter and smarter, imagine what he'll do when he has more space and time, he doesn't rely on athleticism so he could just get better and better and play more games like last night.

Finally he provides an outlet pass/dump kick option. Hemming teams into your forward half is a vital aspect of the modern game and breaking thru that forward press is hard for every team (we are currently the best), contested marking is the easiest way to exit a defensive 50 and Lynch is one of the best in the game.

I agree his value is not over 1 mil after this years performance but we also can't rule out the circumstances, plenty of the best players around the world check out when the situation is a dysfunctional as GC, especially in a position like CHF, which is still the hardest position in our sport.

Fair enough CM and i could argue this with you all day long , but the proof will be in the pudding if he actually improves us in these areas. I do agree with your last sentence that players do #eco in constantly under performing teams with no culture. Just as well Jack ,Trent , Dusty and Rance didn't all those years ago.

They all had each other, Richo, Newman and Sugar Kane to help too. Plus Benny Gale and Dimma built a strong off field culture and a tiger army that always (mostly) has your back.

Tom has Steven May and thats it this year. GC is an absolute basket case, Cochrane while probably good at certain aspects of his job (He isn't an AFL club CEO for nothing) is terrible representation for the club in the media with his aggressive and chaotic delivery style. Compare that to calm that Benny Gale and Dimma have exuded from day dot. Dew is probably a good coach but yet to really get a feel for him and he doesn't have a lot to work with. And finally it must be deflating to run out in front of an apathetic supporter base.
