Aha, there's the rub. I have become inured to the vagaries of following the Sharks, as this kind of defeat from the jaws of victory has been their trademark for years. And at least we have a premiership. I am far too invested in Port, to the extent that I get banished on game nights when we lose, and that's a bad thing. I need to develop the same comfortable numbness I've achieved with the NRL. Especially as it appears on the surface at least to be nowhere near as contrived as the AFL, which is starting to resemble the WWE for managed outcomes.

We tried hard, we tried so hard to hold on but just not good enough to do so. Was a pretty short last quarter, I thought there would have been another 2-3 minutes left.

I thought AJ had a magnificent performance. Not only with 3 goals but he was essentially tagging McGovern for most of the match and kept him completely out of the play for the most part.

Thought Pittard was great, especially early. Lienert was very good once again. Jonas is a beast. Robbie worked hard and Ollie managed to win a lot of the ball (amazing what happens when you're actually on the field!).

In the end we were never going to win after going down to one on the bench, especially not with 2 talls down. West Coast missing so many shots in the last just delayed the inevitable to a heartbreaking crescendo of shit. As I said before, I can't understand the logic of putting Watts behind the ball leaving us with a midget forward line for all of the last quarter. All he had to do was be at CHF and take a couple of marks. Instead we were kicking to Farrell and Sam Gray deep forward. Craziness. Poor coaching.

So in around 50 minutes of footy the best we could muster was two Gray set shots from 50m. Injuries or not, that's appalling footy!

It's all part of the standard script:
Result-changing poor umpiring moment - TICK
Gettable last quarter kicks missed - TICK
Ruck injury making it almost impossible to win a Q4 clearance - TICK
Lack of composure in final minute with field position in F50 - TICK

Change any of those and you change the result. You pick which was the most important. The most telling thing for me is that you can apply this to almost all of our losses this year. We're not learning, and obviously oppositions have figured this out.

See, ordinarily I'd be with you in blaming Hinkley for this, but down to one in the bench with Dixon off and Westhoff forced to cover for Ryder in the ruck, I don't really see what other choice we had. And if we'd held out for 20 seconds longer (or if Wingard's goal hadn't been disallowed because reasons) it would've been the right call.

A good coach would have a team well drilled by now tonice the last 90 seconds, not to continue the honourable losses! Injuries is a hullshit excuse, we weren’t good enough, we lack composure and our leaders suck bigger penis than a pr0n star!

Five minutes into the last quarter we looked like we would lose.

I have seen this happen time after time. We were 18 points up at half time, the third quarter was a disaster but we only lost that quarter by 3 points. At 3/4 time instead of saying to myself wow we dodged a bullet there, now we can make them pay for not putting us away; I was concerned that even though they were still at arms length they were coming at us, and I could see the team panicking in the last quarter. I'm not at all satisfied that I was proved right, it's happened too often.

We lacked composure at the end, and it cost us massively. Our last inside 50 was rubbish, then Ebert overrunning a loose ball which would’ve been a shot. Then I felt we didn’t have players set up properly defensive side of the stoppage, nor guarding the space in front of McGovern.

If Koch and KT were the infallible brainstrust everyone says they are, they would have called his bluff and let him walk to the Queensland Shitshows.

I'd be surprised if Frampton gets a go this week (Excuse #1: the Magpies had a bye - but we're still picking SPP), but if he does he'll probably get pantsed by Grundy at a horrorshow at the MCG and never see the light of the first team again.
