Why wouldn't it be North's first-rounder for Gaff?
Nah. Gaff walks as a FA. We pocket the compensation. In return for our magnanimity, North overpays for Mutimer. That's the kind of co-operation I could go for.

First rounder, you keep Mutimer. We're not that nice.

I suspect the AFL would block that, especially since it involves us and North and not, say, Collingwood and GWS.

What I was thinking of, and what I assume ziad was thinking of, is the Dangerfield situation where we tell North ahead of time that we'd match the FA offer, then they agree to do a deal with us that involves us getting more than we'd get as a compo pick.

Involving Mutimer?

We should definitely match and force a trade scenario.

North is offering $350k more pa thats two fringe players salaries.

If Gaff elects to move it more than just for money. I would bwt a body part if we matched he would still want to go.

Hit up Norths for their first and a ruck either Goldie, Pruess or even Daw.

No way will Norths let a gun like Gaff off the hook after being rejected by ao many others.

If Goldie doesnt want to go West he goes to Geelong and helps us land Kelly.
North's isn't under pressure at all.

North are already a monty for Polec (this is coming from a bloke who never though Kelly or Martin were coming last year), not including being in the driver's seat for Hall this year and quite possibly Kelly next year. As good as Gaff is (and he's much, much better than Polec), North wouldn't be as desperate once North use its first for Polec.

North don't have the picks to go into a trading war and you guys probably won't have the salary room to go after your targets if you did match the Gaff offer. You're best banking the compo pick and using it to pick up Kelly, who is already a gun and would be looking at coming home, if not now, very soon.

I know he's contracted, but I wouldn't mind Declan Mountford being included as steak knives in a possible Gaff trade with North
Out of contract.

One of those player's who is really rated on Bigfooty, but appears not to be rated by the club. Very quick, fit, defensively minded, a thumping kick, tackles all day and works hard, but is a fairly average kick, it's shit, but it's not great either. Strange that he isn't getting a game, he'll come very cheap if he comes back. He'll be a handy rookie for your team.
Isn’t Mounford the bloke that North played as a tagger in the VFL and then at AFL? Kids basically going to be behinds heaps of our kids if that’s the case. He’ll probably end up replacing parto.

I don’t mind that Zurhar kid.
That was out desperation with the tagging.

Zurhaar just re-signed for a few years. A good WA lad, not a big tank on him, but he's built like a brick shit-house. Same with young West Aussie Kyron Hayden, absolute man-child, but not tank again. North always seems to do well with its West Australian players.

MS they won't need to pay that high a price because the 1.2 ( if correct ) will stop us matching their offer.
In reality they don't have to give us "diddle squat" for Gaff if we cant match the offer.

It would only be to Norths benefit to throw some thing our way so that trade relations are not soured in the future, no bad blood so to speak.

But North are not Geelong who have a reputation of trading fairly and are honourable to their players and opposition Clubs at the trade table.

The best situation that we can hope for is that Connors and Gaff assist us with getting fair compensation, failing that we are sadly at the mercy of the AFL's flawed system that will only net us a pick after our first rounder.
As much as I cant stand Connors I will acknowledge that he did help us get better compensation from Carlton in the Judd trade that we would have otherwise gained , but also a large part of that was Judd driven as he insisted that West Coast weren't screwed over by the move.

******* SUCKS  but thats the way it may well play out.

A sacrifice to appease us and win our favour?

North don't have a particularly bad reputation at the trade table though, do they?

Not sure to be honest as they haven't been able to trade in many players of late , their pick ups have been mainly UFA so it was a straight forward pick up.

I guess we are about to find out how fair they are, so its anyones guess.

.

Ah, I see. So we lose a BnF winning, dual AA wingman (getting his second this year), one of the elite midfielders in the competition, whose quality demands 2 first rounders, for a pick in the early to mid 20s (taking into account academy and FS bidding as well), which will certainly not be enough for Kelly alone?

Surely you could see why it'd be better for us to trade?

Don't you worry, we know all about strangely long necks.

Utterly hypnotic.

I don't think so... probably only once we didn't find a deal and that was with Port for Jacobs and we ended up drafting him with the pick we offered them. We've most certainly made this financial offer to Gaff in the anticipation it's too big to match but if you called us on it I have no doubt we'll do our best to work something out.

We'll send you Ashley Adams/Lara Lux

Not yours to give.

Sure, I get that and the system does suck, but is he worth destablising your trade/list/salary strategy for this year?

Maybe, maybe not. I would guess that the Lycett situation may be the determinate factor here as he'll give you more wriggle room on the salary front, but even then, you'll need new ruck depth.
