Byrne has commented on his situation. I thought that I should post this in here as well, just in case it got lost in the bluemour thread:

Basically, he is still undecided. The pull of being back home and playing Gaelic football again seems to be pretty strong.
BLUES supporters, raise your glasses!

reckon 2018 ireland might have a little more to offer than cool weather and prairties to the man..........He might get a shock going back to a bleak 6 months of rain wind and potatoes. All of a sudden a melbourne summer with a few lattes in lygon will look pretty appealing.

Gary Buckenara analyses our list, club and trade strategy: https://outline.com/KLXL57 (unpaywalled from HS)
I have plenty of time for Buckers. He is not perfect, but he puts more effort into one article than most footy 'journos' would in a career.
Summary
All up, nothing surprising or controversial. But at least a balanced view from a pretty respected outsider.
- Some concerns about lack of development in youth (given many players stagnated/disappointed this year)
- Need to continue to target top end talent via draft, but also top up experience via FA an trades
- Shiel higher priority than McGovern
- Suggests trading picks 1 and 24 OR 25 for Shiel and #13. Then use pick 13 on McGovern. Says Adelaide unlikely to accept 24 & 25 for McGovern
- Take pick 24 OR 25 to the draft
- Fasolo a risk, but could be great if he's fit an healthy
- Need a high-pressure small forward
- Midfield the biggest weakness
- 2019 a key year for Levi, Murphy, Lang, JSOS, others
- Murph should hand over captaincy to Cripps
- At least three years from finals, need to stay patient and avoid shortcuts

Umm, can Barrett get away with this?

CARLTON
If
your headquarters are on the fringes of the Melbourne CBD ...
then
we have no idea why you'd feel the need to fly Shiel to Noosa for your pitch. Old-fashioned Carlton arrogance. (Which we like and have recently missed, by the way!). Wonder if Bruce Mathieson even tried the old-fashioned brown paper bag.

HAWTHORN
If
we're the Hawks and we're pitching for Shiel against Carlton, St Kilda and Essendon ...
then
we don't need to charter a flight to Noosa. All we're selling is this: we've got Clarko and Sam Mitchell. And our medical and fitness staff is proven to be world's best practice, and with your shoulders, you need us. And no brown paper bags.
which years roughly?
