I was so so looking forward to Tuohy/Sheehan and Byrne all on the field together for Carlton - assuming Eddie/Jeff and Chris Yarran to be there as well alongside Andrew Walker....

All the best to Byrne enjoy a simpler life.

Byrne has commented on his situation. I thought that I should post this in here as well, just in case it got lost in the bluemour thread:

https://www.dundalkdemocrat.ie/news...whether-he-is-going-to-return-to-the-afl.html

Basically, he is still undecided. The pull of being back home and playing Gaelic football again seems to be pretty strong.

He might get a shock going back to a bleak 6 months of rain wind and potatoes. All of a sudden a melbourne summer with a few lattes in lygon will look pretty appealing.

Naughton's returns as true Blue venue

BLUES supporters, raise your glasses!
Naughton’s Hotel Parkville - where Stephen Kernahan famously belted out ‘Stand By Your Man’ on the Monday after the 1987 Grand Final – is re-establishing itself as the Carlton Football Club’s unofficial social club.

Gary Buckenara analyses our list, club and trade strategy: https://outline.com/KLXL57 (unpaywalled from HS)

I have plenty of time for Buckers. He is not perfect, but he puts more effort into one article than most footy 'journos' would in a career.

Summary
  • Some concerns about lack of development in youth (given many players stagnated/disappointed this year)
  • Need to continue to target top end talent via draft, but also top up experience via FA an trades
  • Shiel higher priority than McGovern
  • Suggests trading picks 1 and 24 OR 25 for Shiel and #13. Then use pick 13 on McGovern. Says Adelaide unlikely to accept 24 & 25 for McGovern
  • Take pick 24 OR 25 to the draft
  • Fasolo a risk, but could be great if he's fit an healthy
  • Need a high-pressure small forward
  • Midfield the biggest weakness
  • 2019 a key year for Levi, Murphy, Lang, JSOS, others
  • Murph should hand over captaincy to Cripps
  • At least three years from finals, need to stay patient and avoid shortcuts
All up, nothing surprising or controversial. But at least a balanced view from a pretty respected outsider.

Thanks for the summary. I stopped reading when he mentioned Harry regressed in 2018. :straining:

Sloppy article - mentions Lang twice in same para and its clearly a typo. No excuse for neglecting injuries to Kennedy and Pickett in his assessment, and Weitering's second half of the season revival. Also suggesting McKay was not one of the improvers ridiculous and lumping SPS in that group quite harsh too. He's showing steady improvement.

Also suggesting that we may only be able to turn pick 1 + 25 into Shiel + McGovern is ridiculous. Worst case scenario 1 = those two players, and we keep 24 and 25. Worst case.

Bit inconsistent, continue to target top end talent in draft but trade 1?

Naughtons was decent but I was a The Clyde kinda guy. Or occasionally over at Johnny Plattens joint on Grattan Street.
The Clyde, now that’s a blast from the past

Umm, can Barrett get away with this?

Surely, the Club should take him to account?

CARLTON

If
your headquarters are on the fringes of the Melbourne CBD ...

then
we have no idea why you'd feel the need to fly Shiel to Noosa for your pitch. Old-fashioned Carlton arrogance. (Which we like and have recently missed, by the way!). Wonder if Bruce Mathieson even tried the old-fashioned brown paper bag.

---

HAWTHORN

If
we're the Hawks and we're pitching for Shiel against Carlton, St Kilda and Essendon ...

then
we don't need to charter a flight to Noosa. All we're selling is this: we've got Clarko and Sam Mitchell. And our medical and fitness staff is proven to be world's best practice, and with your shoulders, you need us. And no brown paper bags.

But … they don't have Mitchell ……
