I watched him at the championships, don't need to see SANFL U18s footage. The consistency of his kicking action needs a bit of work but he should be a dangerous 3rd or 4th forward option in the next 18 months if he puts the work in.

Seems an unusual pick for you guys given he's tall, has speed and isn't built like a brick shithouse.

I know the kid personally. Im happy with pick 42.

Not sure on Grigg’s clearance numbers but has the build, great kick, doubt on defensive side/fitness level though.

Don’t know enough about the other mature ages clearance ability.

Now that Mitch is settled as a BlueBoy, can I challenge the #42 rookie listing being as good as it gets with his big bro Jeremy

McGovern J. was recruited from the Claremont Football Club with the 44th pick in the 2011 Rookie Draft. He was something of a late bloomer, only making his senior debut for West Coast midway through the 2014 season (aged 22). McGovern has been a fixture in the Eagles' line-up since then, and in 2015 played in the grand final loss to Hawthorn. He was named as a defender in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 All-Australian teams, enhancing himself as one of the best key defenders in the league.

Note Jeremy was drafted in 2010 yet did not debut until round 6 2014.

White flag? Not quite.

We've added McGovern & Fasolo, and we'll get Setterfield too. We may have something more up our sleeve also, there's plenty of time left in the trade period.

Doc will be back, our kids will have another preseason under their belt, and we'll hopefully have a better run with injuries.

We've got enough ordinary mature talent already, why assume more will help us? It didn't last year when we went down that path, and clearly there wasn't a standout option this year, as Kelly was last year.

All the reasons I'm surprised the the AFL assistance of the pick of mature age talent was simply turned into more spots midfield in the regular draft.

No standout like Kelly you suggest, the Eagles grabbed Willie Rioli in 2016 & Liam Ryan in 2017 & both saw GF glory - neither of these guys were unknowns, the gurus just overlooked them. Its that sort of turnaround that the Blues dont seem to be believe in.

I dare say not as well as they did with you.

We picked up Mullett, O’Shea, Shaw and Garlett as “mature” players last year - only one remains, and rightly so.

Not every mature player will make an immediate impact.

We’ll have to wait for the drafts to see if we could have achieved more. I’d suggest Carlton has the same intel on players that all teams have in its possession. That we didn’t choose the two players you mentioned doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve made a mistake with the players we’ve selected. We may still decide to pick a one or two mature age players in the upcoming drafts. Who knows?

That said I would like us to change our rookie drafting philosophy. Rookie spots should be for mature aged players, delisted free agents, and developing or backup ruckman.

A rookie list containing Marlion Pickett, Michael Gibbons, Mitch Grigg and Andrew Phillips (delisted and picked up again) would be a great boost to the depth at our club, and the strength of our VFL team. Sam Collins and Haiden Schloithe are other good prospects.

How long to make an impact is the bottom line - you've got some top end talent growing & adding more kids seems to me to be the long way home. Watch with interest.

I think the last club to exercise it was Adelaide in 2015, when they took Milera and Doedee in the first round, then exited the draft.
