I watched him at the championships, don't need to see SANFL U18s footage. The consistency of his kicking action needs a bit of work but he should be a dangerous 3rd or 4th forward option in the next 18 months if he puts the work in.

Seems an unusual pick for you guys given he's tall, has speed and isn't built like a brick shithouse.
I know the kid personally. Im happy with pick 42.

So which out of the mature age players, could best help Cripps ?

Schloithe
Gibbons
Bolton
Grigg

Or
Recycles

Horlin-Smith
Barlow
Scrimshaw ?
?

Not sure on Grigg’s clearance numbers but has the build, great kick, doubt on defensive side/fitness level though.

Don’t know enough about the other mature ages clearance ability.

Coming around to a one year Barlow, with option of another, as a player/mentor/coach.

Now that Mitch is settled as a BlueBoy, can I challenge the #42 rookie listing being as good as it gets with his big bro Jeremy

McGovern J. was recruited from the Claremont Football Club with the 44th pick in the 2011 Rookie Draft. He was something of a late bloomer, only making his senior debut for West Coast midway through the 2014 season (aged 22). McGovern has been a fixture in the Eagles' line-up since then, and in 2015 played in the grand final loss to Hawthorn. He was named as a defender in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 All-Australian teams, enhancing himself as one of the best key defenders in the league.

Note Jeremy was drafted in 2010 yet did not debut until round 6 2014.

So no mature agers for the Blues, prefer to have extra more chances in the under age bonanza … is that a white flag for season 2019?

White flag? Not quite.

We've added McGovern & Fasolo, and we'll get Setterfield too. We may have something more up our sleeve also, there's plenty of time left in the trade period.

Doc will be back, our kids will have another preseason under their belt, and we'll hopefully have a better run with injuries.

We've got enough ordinary mature talent already, why assume more will help us? It didn't last year when we went down that path, and clearly there wasn't a standout option this year, as Kelly was last year.

All the reasons I'm surprised the the AFL assistance of the pick of mature age talent was simply turned into more spots midfield in the regular draft.

No standout like Kelly you suggest, the Eagles grabbed Willie Rioli in 2016 & Liam Ryan in 2017 & both saw GF glory - neither of these guys were unknowns, the gurus just overlooked them. Its that sort of turnaround that the Blues dont seem to be believe in.

How do you think they would have gone at Carlton?

I dare say not as well as they did with you.

We picked up Mullett, O’Shea, Shaw and Garlett as “mature” players last year - only one remains, and rightly so.

Not every mature player will make an immediate impact.

We’ll have to wait for the drafts to see if we could have achieved more. I’d suggest Carlton has the same intel on players that all teams have in its possession. That we didn’t choose the two players you mentioned doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve made a mistake with the players we’ve selected. We may still decide to pick a one or two mature age players in the upcoming drafts. Who knows?

People need to remember that we need to select three players in the national draft. Without pick 42 we would be forced to use both 69 and 77. Odds of 42 having a career is much higher than 77.

Also I'd be astounded if any mature aged player gets picked up before pick 42. Most of the players left are rookie options at best.

In addition we'd have to delist an extra player such as Rowe or Pickett.

That said I would like us to change our rookie drafting philosophy. Rookie spots should be for mature aged players, delisted free agents, and developing or backup ruckman.

A rookie list containing Marlion Pickett, Michael Gibbons, Mitch Grigg and Andrew Phillips (delisted and picked up again) would be a great boost to the depth at our club, and the strength of our VFL team. Sam Collins and Haiden Schloithe are other good prospects.

Guess I see a guy like Kelly, or Rioli, even Ryan as journeymen yet to get a chance versus players seeking a second chance - the AFL assistance was quite specific.

How long to make an impact is the bottom line - you've got some top end talent growing & adding more kids seems to me to be the long way home. Watch with interest.

Minimum 2 at the draft, but minimum of 3 list changes.

So SOS drafts Walsh at 1 then goes home before returning 1/2 of the way through the second stage/day of the draft to see who he can get with 42 before ordering a pizza and waiting to see if anyone bids on Ben before our 4th round pick. Maybe snaffle a smokie/project player/mature ager with one/both of our final picks depending on Ben (if he goes ND, RD or N/A)

At this stage yes, but let's wait and see.

Changed the rules have they?
Back when GC & GWS entered the league.

I think the last club to exercise it was Adelaide in 2015, when they took Milera and Doedee in the first round, then exited the draft.

Only if that 3rd list change is a rookie upgrade.
Trades, FAs, DFAs don’t count.
Just checked the 2016 and 2017 rules, looks like you're right. Ugh, I thought they changed that years ago.

Sorry gandaal, looks like you're right.
