Harsha Bhogle was interesting yesterday when he said ball tampering is a minor offence in cricket that usually carries a 1 match suspension and Indian cricket cannot believe the players copped a 12 month suspension. It doesn't appear Australia disciplining players has made any impression on other countries but to laugh at us.

Usually it carries a fine - the 1-match man is the maximum possible punishment.

Wouldn't surprise me if the 9-12 month bans had ramifications on the team's performance beyond this summer too.

A solid partnership here puts us right back in it. Just need to get a bit of out of Paine, Cummins, and maybe Starc.

I’m sick to death of every commentator on fox criticising Handscombe’s technique. He’s the only batsman that has stood up so far ffs.
At least he actually values his wicket which is more than we can say for Finch and Smarsh based on their shot selection today.

Others have observed that we're so obsessed with batting out time that we've mostly forgotten to rotate the strike.

Smith's technique is still questionable too.

Would you have fathered we continued our form at the start of this decade and selected average batsmen with good technique?
Smith is a freakish unicorn basically. Look at what happens when you preserver with unfashionable things, you get a Lyon sometimes. Yeah promoting good technique (even if you fail) with a focus on tests in our youth development would have been far better. Be average for 5 years then you get your Smiths, Starcs to add the x factor. We have all these young guys that cant even hold it down, they all think they have Warner and Smiths eye and they are being coached like that because of the 'success' of guys like Warner. In a healthy setup he is of Symonds level importance, by the ned he was running the show, ****ing laughable.

Of course they will. Steve Smith was obliterating records as the no 1 bat in the world and on his way to being one of the greats of all time. I would not be surprised if he doesn't return in that form - you can't be out of the game (at international test level) for that long and just continue on in such a rich vein - not too mention all the additional mental pressure he will have to make amends/make up for lost time/answer his critics/etc. It's a shame as I feel we will be robbed of a 'generational' cricketer.

The penalties were so harsh due to public reaction and the fallout continues with the latest audit and 'nice guys' thing. The real reason I beleive Aussies are hostile to the cricket team is so many got used to Australia dominating everyone for about 2 decades. It became the norm to be so much better than everyone and when we became an average side, it was jarring, uncomfortable and the team lost respect and popularity. I mean everyone loved the cricket team in the 2000's and they were more abrasive, aggressive, etc then than now.

Spot on. I feel to an extent the 'cultural issues' are overblown because many people don't just want to admit we aren't very good any more.

I'm a big proponent of technique - Warner has a very good technique in my view combined with an aggressive attitude. Smith is as you correctly point out a freak with an eye like a dead fish. There's not a lot of strong technique's coming through and that's a bigger concern imo.
