Travis Head, the first Port supporter to score a Test hundred since ???
Is Dizzy a Port man or has just done a couple of things with the club?

Hopefully Joe Burns' performance clearly demonstrates to the selectors that there is a difference between T20/ODI Cricket and Shield Cricket. You have to be able to bat all day in a Test Match against bowlers who have few restrictions not just whack it for 10-30 overs against bowlers operating with limited field placements and different rules. Form in Shield Cricket has to be the main criteria for Test selection and Burns had the form in the longer format.

Well done Travis Head and Joe Burns.

The Harris and Khawaja dismissals were a worry. Two batsmen out playing wild shots to deliveries 600mm (two feet) outside of their off stump. Unless Khawaja makes a big score in the second dig he should not get a boarding pass on the plane to England. Steve Smith should take his place.

Great to see Head finally got a Test century, can't remember the last time an SA-born player last got a hundred at this level, probably Boof.

Must be Dizzy Day because he got a double century against Bangladesh in his last test. I am not sure if that was before or after Boof.

Yep. Dizzy was the last SA player but he was born in Sydney and moved here when he was in primary school. Boof made 150 odd in Sri Lanka in February or March 2004 about 4-6 weeks after David Hookes was killed. Was a key innings to us winning the test. Made a few more 50's after than, but never got another ton.

Eric Freeman made a hundred for Australia but it was not in a Test. He made 116 against Northhants on the 1968 Ashes tour. That looks to be the closest a Port supporter has got to a Test ton prior to today. Of course Fritzie's absence on that 1968 tour gave an opportunity to Russell Ebert who filled in at full forward and kicked 44 goals in Fritzie's absence.

After the death of Hughes much was made of the necessity to improve helmets.
What has been done to improve them?

The clip-on attachment, which provides extra protection for the exposed and vulnerable area at the back of the head and neck without restricting movement.

The StemGuard fits onto all Masuri ELITE Senior, TEST Senior & LEGACY Senior Helmets. It comes with three sizes of interchangeable centre strap, so that the guard can be adjusted accordingly to ensure a comfortable fit.

...... Cricket Australia (CA) this morning released the findings and recommendations of an independent review into his death chaired by Melbourne barrister David Curtain QC.
......
In his report Curtain noted that since Hughes's death batters have been wearing a 'Stem Guard' attached across the back of the helmet, in an attempt to offer protection to the back of the neck. He said further evaluation is needed to determine if it materially increases player safety.....

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricke...n-caused-by-blow-to-neck-20141127-11vlnn.html

The condition that killed Phillip Hughes has only been reported 100 times before and was only once before caused by a cricket ball, Australian team doctor Peter Brukner says.

An emotional Dr Brukner said the 25-year-old suffered an "incredibly rare" vertebral artery dissection caused when a cricket ball struck his neck during a Sheffield Shield match in Sydney on Tuesday.

The blow caused Hughes' vertebral artery, one of the main arteries leading to the brain, to compress. That caused the artery to split and Hughes experienced a "massive bleed into his brain". "I think in this instance, this was a freakish accident because it was an injury to the neck that caused a haemorrhage in the brain," Dr Brukner said.

"The condition is incredibly rare. It's called vertebral artery dissection leading to subarachnoid haemorrhage, if you look in the literature there are only about 100 cases ever reported." The injury is often immediately fatal, Dr Brukner said, however Hughes was resuscitated on the pitch and was transported to St Vincent's Hospital. "He was not in pain before he passed and was surrounded by his family and close friends," Dr Brukner said.

The head of trauma at St Vincent's Hospital, Doctor Tony Grabs, also described Hughes' injury as "very rare, very freakish", saying such a condition had never been treated at the hospital before.

carn, its an absolute road and theyre playing a sub-shield standard side

I posted 'back in contention' not that either are certainties to be selected but the guys can only make the runs and take the wickets. The opposition may not be strong but Australia were 3/28 and 3/37 in each innings and things could have gone rapidly downhill on either occasion but thanks to Head, Burns, Patterson and Khawaja they didn't. It wasn't just the runs these guys scored or their batting technique but their mental capacity to fight their way out of a difficult situation on two occasions. Mitchell Starc took 5/54 and almost put a couple of Lakans in hospital on this wicket you are calling a 'road'. The wicket it is also beginning to crack up as was pointed out on the commentary yesterday so I would not blame the Aussie successes on a flat track.

I agree that the Sri Lankans are not strong and if they had held their catches things might have been different but if we are going to shitcan individuals when they fail we should also give them some credit when they succeed. Starc and Kahwaja are back in contention nothing more nothing less.

It's hard to get a gauge on the Aussie's current form as I also believe a decent shield team, eg the Bushrangers would probably make a mess of Sri Lanka as well.
Head's form has been very impressive, but his real test will be how he handles the late movement off the seam in the upcoming Ashes series in England against the `to and froms' pace attack.

I did forget to ask- have you seen guys in the Sri Lankan tests wearing this adaption?
I did not look closely but I got the impression that the adaption was not being used.

I noticed it a few times. The Stem Guard they were wearing was blue not yellow. I reckon Khawaja wears one.

This picture shows both top order batsman Dhananjaya de Silva and bowler Perera wearing them. They are on both sides of the helmet as can be seen in the video linked below where this screen shot comes from.

It truly warms my heart to see the West Indies crushing England in a Test series. Make no mistake, it's been a bloodbath.

For me a significant aspect of this West Indian team is they're all West Indians of African descent, suggesting perhaps the game of cricket is winning the hearts and minds of these kids again, over basketball, soccer and other sports.
In more recent times, as West Indian cricket has declined to embarrassing levels, the team has been largely made of up players of Indian descent. If the stronger, athletically gifted black kids of the islands are indeed starting the make their way back to cricket it may not be too far fetched to foresee the day when West Indian cricket again rises to the top of the tree.
