I'm actually surprised that more AFL players don't have alcohol problems stemming from anxiety issues, with the vultures in media that live around them.

I'm also a little disappointed that people think mentioning anxiety is a copout or a lame excuse. It's not like Fremantle as a club wheel out that line often. I can't remember them ever making a public statement about very specific mental health issues. Amidst the litany of idiotic things their players have done over the past few years, I don't recall a conversation about specific diagnoses. I mean my memory is terrible because of poor alcohol choices, but I do try my best to remember all of the hilarious fremantle escapes of drunken idiocy.

Peeps have gotta remember that there's more stigma to carrying mental health issues into the public world than there could ever be possible benefits of covering up minor indiscretions.

I get it, I hate Freo and their supporters and a good deal of their players too. But come on.
There's probably more of a drug problem in the AFL than a drinking problem. They still need to look after their skin folds and booze won't help with that, while uncle charlie does.

Agree that it’s bad to dilute the real mental health issues people face, but also not totally convinced that clubs trot out the line every time there’s an indiscretion.

Plenty of bad behaviour that doesn’t get the mental health excuse. I just reckon there’s a bit of confirmation bias that kicks in whenever it’s mentioned.

But for sure, there’s only so many times it can be used to justify blokes being knobheads before people stop believing it altogether

For a 69 year old (turning 70 this year), Fraser Anning looks very young. Thought he was in his 50's.

That's a shock, all of his ideals seem so up to date.

Hmmm...

Tricky one.

Firstly, mental illness is not an excuse to make dumb choices.
Mental illness is not your fault but it is your responsibility and treating anyone with mental illness with kids gloves just perpetuates their learned helplessness.

Still, mental illness does change how the dumb decision should be addressed by the club. Also, the media should really stfu about things they know nothing about.

Is clinical anxiety different to ordinary anxiety? He needs to tell the club he's not doing anymore clinics.

Fremantle board is delicious right now. Mix between full blown melts and hardcore kool-aid consumption.

All I'm saying is that you shouldn't start putting the boots into Bell.

Hogan is a quality player

Debatable.

who is a list priority. Hogan has managed to rehab very well this season with regards to his navicular injury.

You can't honestly expect Bell to foresee this four months later?

Yes, you honestly can. When most of the Melbourne fanbase can admit there was a problem, corroborated by half of WA, you’d have to expect something like this would happen.

Maybe just maybe it was a bad idea to take a player who over the last couple of years has lost his father, been diagnosed with a life threatening disease and to top it off missed his former club's first finals series in yonks due to injury and then throw him into the environment of a 2 team town where he's hyped as a marquee player.

Anyone game to hit the piss hard and call into work with clinical anxiety?

Things are as bad at Freo as they have been for a long time. It's not just Hogan stuff, although that's obviously a huge part of it, it's also the Bennell circus, Lyon's sexual harassment, key players like Neale and Weller wanting out when the issue isn't job security, money or homesickness.

Then there's the record breaking run or 100 point losses, the mind boggling decision to keep cooked players like Ballantyne, the recruitment of 'meh' players like Colyer, Matera and Conca.

Furthermore, there are the lesser issues of Fyfe's leadership and whatever happened to McCarthy.

I reckon in a few years it'll come out that the guy running ship was making all the decisions drunk, just like what happened at St. Kilda.

Hogans definitely going down the Cousins path.

Hopefully Freo look at how badly we mismanaged things back in the 2000's and learn from it.

FWIW, Jesses probably had more than his fair share of pretty awful things happen to him in the last couple of years. It’s not exactly surprising to see a negative impact on his mental health. But anxiety/depression doesn’t discriminate; you can be on top of the world and still get depression.

I have both depression/anxiety, had some Performance issues at work, where I thought I could handle it all. Truth be told, I couldn’t. I really internalised, tried to push through it and hide that I wasn’t well. Turns out I’m not a great actor so I had to realise I had a problem and make the steps to help myself. Workplaces are considerably more understanding now and have the support in place to help.

I think one thing that really gets undersold is just how little interest you have about the things most important to you. It’s one week out from footy and I bet you any other year Jesse isn’t going out on a Saturday night the week before the season starts. So I wish him all the best with his recovery. I doubt this is going to a quick fix but hopefully he will be in a better headspace soon.

I just ventured over to their board. Oh boy. They're getting awfully self-reflective:

"I think we're cursed. Its as simple as that.
At least West Coast are good at football which would make it easier when the players screw up.
We're just a joke and other than a couple of good years always have been.
"

This part is so true as well, I nearly felt sorry for them for a moment reading this....but it passed.
