Review Round 2, 2019 vs Carlton

I agree with you about Boak and our forwards aside from Ebert and Motlop.

Westhoff and Marshall were pantsed and Boak burnt 50% of his touches and is largely responsible for Watts having his leg broken.

Overall though that was a positive performance. We would have folded in previous seasons but the kids plus Lycett didn’t allow it.
Our kids give me hope long term. I hope they don’t have all flair coached out of them by Ken.

Hope the injuries aren't too serious for your mob, decent contest that was. Well done to your mob.

Seen a bit of Lycett hyping, don't wanna be a downer but Phillips is useless. He'll make everyone he plays against look like the next Dean Cox.
Can only beat whose in front of you. Last week Gawn, this week Phillips. 2 rounds in Lycett has been immense. McKay for you blokes looks a prospect.

Bank the 4 pts and move on. Strange day, we need to fix our forward 50 entries. Fingers crossed injuries aren't as serious as they looked.

Wasn't pretty, but that was a solid win. Carlton aren't the easy beats they once were. I actually had a moments tbought during game where I tbought getting rid of Chad was the right thing after all. Cos we didn't just gain class, we lost laziness.

But the biggest story of the night is watts. He is a top quality player, and I really did have high hopes for him in the back line this year. Howard can definitely fill the void, but not the same class. Hope it's not too serious, but I'm not confident. I'm thinking broken and a good three months out.
We will definitely miss Watts.

An absolute scrap where the rain played into their hands as most expected.

We looked like the better side for the majority of the night, we completely outplayed them in the midfield but our old issues in attack, and our incredibly bad defence when an opposition attacks at pace shone as bright as the sun. We have a shit load to work on, but there's a bit of improvement there. Even if that realistically has come off the back of Rocky finding form and Boak finally getting played back in midfield. So places you wouldn't have expected the growth to come. Lycett is also doing well and taking a load off Paddy.

Next week should be really interesting. I'd be tipping Brisbane based on our issues against speed, so if we can extract a win it'd be huge.

Strong effort losing 2 and then having to switch to wet weather footy.

Some fuzzy feels:
- Scott Lycett could push to be the best ruck in the league
- Tom Rockliff and Travis Boak going back into their primes - wow.
- I bet we win most 50/50s when Drew or Butters are involved. Incredibly solid players.

I was worried about trading off Chad and Polec but I think it was the right choice now. Off-season change of going from moving out a bunch of flashy players to just solid footballers is paying off well right now. The squad looks so much more balanced.
Yes thought Drew was very good today...cool head and so good on the contest...followed on from last week

SPP played his cleanest football once it started raining. For the first time in two years he didn’t look like fumbling. Thought he was good.
Agree 100%. It's like the rain forces him to slow down a step and make sure he executes properly. When it's dry he goes 1000% and often ends up doing more harm than good.

My prediction out by 2 points. Great to win but that was too hard. Forward pressure poor all game. So glad we have Lycett and our young recruits.

Stoked we got the win, but damn that was a tough one to sit through live. Felt like I was watching 36 blokes fight over a bar of soap.

It probably didn’t help that I sat through it sober, but I’m adamant that the SMA aren’t getting a cent out of me this year, even if I do feel like Homer at the baseball.

He plays like a hundred gamer, great attack, great use, and great ability to spread and hit the next contest. I really hope they find a way to keep him in when Ollie’s back.

My play of the day has to be Butters with the lookaway handball to Drew, who scoots away and squares it to Duursma near the centre circle, who sends it perfectly to Motlop to pretty much seal the game.

I think our skill level and positioning when we move forward look better than year. Players like Rockliff, Butters, Drew and Burton are good in close and are good decision makers. Our skills let us down at times but the conditions were tough.

Is there a place for slow defenders under the new rules? DBJ and Bonner have burnt the ball, but are getting too it. Jonas is looking too often so far this year like a lumbering throw back defender. I’m sure an unpopular opinion here and it’s too soon to say the game has passed him by, but it’s a very inauspicious start to his Captaincy in my eyes, as far as his own performance goes.

Where does this “Boak gave the ball to the opposition 50% of the time” thing come from? The AFL app has him at 70% disposal efficiency.

Break it down by foot / hand... although even one of his handballs went directly to a Carlton player. His disposal today was generally shocking.
