The booing had nothing to do with GAJ like Izzy's Instagram post.

It was just classless and juvenile behaviour by Hawks fans, nothing more, nothing less.

I think it had a bit to do with it. It's like those that booed really want to boo champions, and the social media 'like' gave them the excuse to give it their all without holding back.

Preface; I'm not religious and don't particularly like the idea of any organised religion nor do I have any issue with gay people.

Are people boo'ing GAJ because he liked Israel Folau's post? Gaz is a Christian, Christians believe homosexuality is a sin and they believe a sin will land you in the firey pits of hell. I don't agree with any of this obviously but people like Gaz do because it is their religious right to do so. Many other large religions share similar beliefs, including Islam.

People are effectively shitting on someone for being religious. Imagine if they did this to Bachar Houli?

The Collingwood fans boo'd Sheed ffs, that's like running over bambi with a steam roller. This booing is just a safe way to show you dislike something, nothing more so to imply racism, sexism or homophobia is a bit rich I think.

I know plenty of Christians who don't share Folau's belief. Besides - and I know the same point has been made here multiple times - holding something as a religiously motivated belief doesn't give you an all-clear to say whatever you like about it in public without repercussion.

This is 2019 and many religious people can recognise that times change and there is nothing wrong with being gay but that doesn't mean they all do. You're glancing my point a little bit though aren't you?

I boo Damien Barrett. What does that make me? Oh, and i have never heard Rance, Corch, Dusty or Jack get boo’d or abused at games.......oh, wait......

Sent from my iPad using righteous Bhodi manpower

Media love throwing Richmond players under busses, double standards.

A little, to be honest.

In saying that people are effectively shitting on him for being religious: no, I fundamentally disagree. Regardless of whether he is religious or not, public statements do not have to be made stating that being LGBTQ is sinful and wrong. This is the difference between Folau and Houli; maybe Houli believes that it's wrong to be gay and that gays are going to hell, maybe he doesn't. We don't know, because he hasn't come out and said so in public.

People are free to believe what ever they want.

People like Ablett and Falau are also free to use their profile how ever they want.

And we are free to berate them for it.

That is how it works. If you do not like getting berated for your views, don't publicly express them.

ps. I am pretty sure Islam has had its fair share of abuse.

Geelong fans historically booed Hodge. Great players get booed. Why is this a problem?
The only time I remember Hodge getting booed was either his very first possession or when he's received a soft free kick. Everyone boos soft free kicks though.

And if you asked the Hawk diehard supporters why they were booing Ablett, half wouldn’t have had a genuine clue why

Ablett likes a social media post and gets booed and is supposedly a sh!t human.
Bollocks.

Hawthorn fans booed Ablett about 30 times last year in the Round 21 match. It's because he is a recognisable superstar who constantly flops & stages for frees and sooks to umpires when he doesn't get one. Hawks fans don't like him. It's as simple as that. Why would we like him?

No different to all those times Buddy was jeered when Hawthorn played Geelong, Richmond or Essendon. Didn't matter how good he was for us - Opposition fans didn't like him when they played us and so they booed him.

Most footy fans don't give a toss about the social media postings of opposition footballers. Shit like that might cause a stir amongst a couple hundred dorks on Big Footy or Facebook, but for your average footy fan, it would barely register on their radar.

Everyone wants to talk up football rivalries (eg. Geel vs Haw) and revel in the atmosphere of MCG blockbusters, but diehard fans are criticised when they show their passion & boo opposition villains.

Isn't this part of what makes our game great? Imagine how sterile it would be if spectators weren't emotionally invested and they never booed opposition players or umpires.

The clowns in the footy media always act like a few thousand booing spectators are losing their minds, frothing with rage and screaming obscenities. I think they're out of touch. Have they forgotten what's it like to pay to get in and be a real football fan? They should get out of their air-conditioned suites on level 2 and watch the game from behind the goals.

Booing is nothing more than a good-natured verbal middle finger from the fans.

Rank and file footy fans buy memberships & pay their money at the gate. They are the lifeblood of the AFL. Their devotion to the game and their own team is what enables AFL footballers to live comfortable lives. Even more so, the lucky footballers who make a lucrative career for themselves in the football media - you would think these ex-players would be more understanding of their own audience and not shit in their own nest.

Here's a thought: Why don't people STFU about spectators booing, stop building it up into something bigger than it is and just accept it as part & parcel of the AFL Theatre?

1) He's a flopper and dives for free kicks/umpires pet/protected species
2) Nothing but a cheap 1-2 chip scab stat peddler
3) His selfish "all about me" attitude
4) Being the worst captain of an AFL club in history...... Joel Selwood is a close second to that by the way ;)
Getting in teammates faces and telling them to block for him, not leading by example.
5) Creating the worst culture at a football club. He's supposed to be a captain and set the standards (both on the ground and off)
6) Signing a deal with the Gold Coast, then conveniently when the richest part of the deal had been completed he had no interested in finishing the rest off
7) Sprouting his religion
8) Showing his true homophobic colours

If anything the events of the past week should see him get booed louder :)

Who really cares ? These players get paid Millions of dollars to play a Game they love. booing, cheering, and applause is just part and parcel of the package.

It's just a bunch of drunktards in the crowd hating on an awesome player that doesn't play for there team, that's how drunktards have fun at the footy, a very Australian thing

Booing great players is nothing new, it's endearment IMO...Boo comes from the French word beau, meaning to admire or beautiful. Very glad that our Hawk friends love Gary Ablett so much that they put in that extra effort on Monday!

Aside from liking Izzy's posts, when has GAJ ever made any homophobic comment.
Also he is not a stat peddler or a diver/flipper at all, most of this post is just either pure ignorant drivel or just a blatant troll.

GAJ has been an icon and champion of the game . Your bitter Hawk rivalry with Geelong will never change that, and with all due respect, makes you look rather silly and still tasting sour grapes from yesterday

You mean to tell me he's NEVER EVER hand-passed the ball over and over again in quick succession to pad his stats ? ;)

You obviously were not watching one of the games against Hawthorn from last year where he clearly flopped and was awarded two of the softest free kicks you'll ever see ;).

"Why can't people respect Ablett's views???"

Older posters, was it this tedious in 1980 or whenever the tide turned on overt racism?
As a geriatric poster, I recall the time Bert Newton said of Mohhamed Ali " I like the boy". There was also the occassion when Frank Blue Eyes called Australian journalists hookers and pimps.

Strikes guffaws recriminations followed.

And so still we are here today.

I think that if Gary A or his dad ever had the chance to meet the dandy Quentin Crisp, then attitudes would shift quite quickly.
