Online trolling and abuse

If people (and not referring to any poster here at all) say that online bullying and abuse is an overreaction and not a problem, i suggest you think about all the kids who have killed, or attempted suicide cause of shitty online remarks and bullying.

This isn't just a football issue

100000000% Agree.
Have known, like probably many here, young people who have ended their lives due to online bullying.
In our day you just fought it out in the school yard after school, or on the footy field, and the bulling usually stopped.

And while people can hide behind usernames, this sort of thing will not stop.
If it was compulsory to use your real name, I dare say a majority of this bullying would stop.

(Yes I see the irony when we use usernames on here)

an interesting situation for me of how even Big Footy can soften our thresholds- referring to Collingwood and Essendon using names such as filth and scum is severely frowned upon in the real world. People were offended

So are Carlton supporters offended by terms such as Carltank, salary cap cheats etc which we have endured online since 2002 and continue to do so guns?

I'm not offended. Actually feel sorry for those that have to use such terms to make some sort of point.

Happy to have the discussion about our cheating and about our 'supposed' tanking but for someone simply offering a clever (?) put-down........I feel sorry for them, given that's the scope of discussion they're only capable of having.

I think us older folk still stand by the old 'sticks and stones....'
Growing up I was told never let anyone deliberately disrespect or make a fool of you, and to stick up for those that could not stick up for themselves.
Somethings could be quietly sorted out, sometimes fist flew.

Today, there are no rules.
There is no respect.
People can say what you want with no repercussion.
I genuinely feel sorry for today's young people, the one's that cannot defend themselves.

Bullying can be relentless.
Was one thing trying to dodge some fool that needed to puff his chest out at school, but now it can be hard to escape thanks to anti-social media.

Reminds me: Recall being in year 9 and happened to be up to 2 years younger than many other kids in my year, when the big muscle man decided to pin me to the ground in class. Flipped him over and threatened to smash his face to the floor. Nothing but respect from all in the class thereafter. Silly but true.

well what I thought added humour was considered derogatory and have been instructed to cease

there is little doubt we tanked and it still happens today I am sure- there would have been more complaints if we had rapidly risen but as we still struggle I think most have moved on.

Social media is not the greatest thing in our great world in fact i think it's a negative part. Back in my day if you wanted your thoughts to be known you would have to send a letter or Telegram.

i found carrier pigeon was far more reliable

Like Harris calling out people that commented about her as 'animals'?
That was particularly poor given one had plenty of time to come back with something decidedly better than that.

I think we should express sorrow and concern for those that require to exercise their liberties via Social Media (any medium) simply to spew vile comments.
These people can't be in a good way, likely have 'real' low self-esteem and maybe just need a hug themselves. (you know what I mean)

was that her initial reaction or the massaged reaction at a later date? She was far more tempered the next day- at least what i heard

I think there should be additional punishment to cases like this aside from banning/revoking memberships and going to the footy.

oh yeah? and who gets to decide which cases are worthy? We all have different filters and points of view and that will influence what we perceive as individuals as ' cases like this". its a mine field and not solveable. Human nature is what it is. war is the ultimate expression of mans differences and we have never been able to solve this problem- despite many intelligent people trying to do so.
if we treat each other with respect as best we can- then that should be enough.

I abhor violence and for the few times I had the ability to be violent.... I detested myself thereafter.
Violence against women, violence against children, violence against men and violence against fauna.

Terrible state to be in where it's still somehow acceptable to be violent.... under the 'right' of circumstances.

Tree punching is okay HARKER?

I choose to be offended.....in a not real way.

Surely you're not that naive to think some occupations don't require violence as part of the job?

Wouldn't watch mixed martial arts or boxing just because they're currently accepted in society.
Will be looked back on as a primitive pass time for primitive people.

Not trying to make this about me, but we'd make for a better society without legalised brutality.
That's not to say it should be banned, but all being well, we learn to live without such activities and for it to be seen some time in the future as something our great great great great etc grandparents used to do.

Social media is a cesspool. Unfortunately there’s a lot of people out there who say awful things.! Attention seekers a lot of them.

I have noticed in some of these instances though the offender is intellectually disabled.

Sometimes I feel like we’re better deleting and ignoring comments like this.

Interesting discussion.
The anonymity afforded by social media is a blessing and a curse in some ways - it allows for the free exchange of thoughts & ideas in a pressure free environment that can help reduce ignorance etc.
The downside is that it often emboldens weak individuals to snipe at others for their struggles, difference of opinion or perceived issues.

Please pardon the intrusion folks, but this post brings up part of the reason I post under my real name. I have to be responsible for everything I post and while I have no problem with people posting under user names, aliases or whatever else you want to call them, if you are going to post the sort of thing this thread is discussing, then be man enough to do so under your real name. I've always felt that if you are going to post the sort of vitriol then be prepared to accept the consequences.

I suspect that would prevent the majority of online bullying. But then, there are some people you just can't help...

It was a shit comment by whoever made it. Furthermore, the media need to have a good hard look at themselves for giving this crap mass audience oxygen. They play the man for living, and did so again by airing it.

No; not in the slightest. Main regret is that we haven't yet capitalised on it and further intensify opposition resentment; but that will come. Much rather garner resentment than pity
