If possible, id like to see any games with finals permutations played as close to, if not at the same time as another.

As it sits:

Coll v Ess
Port v Freo
Tigers v Lions
And possibly Dogs v Hawks

All potentially have results that may impact finals qualifications.

Would setup an EPL style round, where no team will know what exactly may be required to qualify. Would be pretty amazing.

With the bye before finals, an extra day or two rest is pretty irrelevant. If a player isn't right to play in 14 days, a 15 day break isn't gonna be the difference. I would just schedule the games based on excitement and watchability.

Coll Ess
Rich Bris
Port Freo

These are the season defining games that shape finals. For the love of God don't put Geelong slaughtering Carlton on a Friday night. The extra night sleep is insignificant.

Am I in the minority on BigFooty in thinking we no longer need a floating Round 23 schedule if we have a pre-finals bye?
The rest days are insignificant due to the bye. The only reason to have floating fixture now is to schedule the important games people want to see in the prime slots. There are a few finals defining games where both teams have heaps at stake, these should be scheduled appropriately. Play the blowout games at the oddball times no one watches, early Saturday/Sunday and Sunday Twilight.

Sunday
North Melbourne vs Melbourne, 1:10pm, Blundstone (gives North prep time if they make the eight, and avoids bad light issues at Blundstone)
This make more sense. We're more likely to get the Sunday afternoon slot, finals contention or not. The other option would be early Saturday arvo slot.

If the only reason we have a pre-finals bye is to ensure that the matches in the last round are scheduled according to appropriateness and watchability, does that mean we should look into having a floating fixture from Round 20 onwards? By Round 20 we know which games will be dead rubbers and which ones will be relevant so leaving the fixture open at the end of the season ensures the season ends on a high, and in turn the regular blockbuster matches on FTA will build anticipation for the finals

Only things that matter here are R22 fixturing and ratings. Finals prep time has zero bearing - in fact, arguably finals teams would WANT to play on the Sunday given how poorly everyone seems to back up after a bye.

Friday
Collingwood v Essendon - MCG - 7:50PM

Saturday
Western Bulldogs v Adelaide - Marvel - 1:45PM
North Melbourne v Melbourne - Blundstone Arena - 2:10PM
Sydney v St Kilda - SCG - 4:45PM
Geelong v Carlton - GMHBA - 7:25PM
Port Adelaide v Fremantle - Adelaide Oval - 7:40PM

Sunday
Gold Coast v GWS - Metricon - 1:10PM
Richmond v Brisbane - MCG - 3:20PM
WCE v Hawthorn - Optus - 5:20PM

Realistically all of the Saturday games are interchangeable but Friday and Sunday should look like this given five of those six Sunday teams play on the Sunday beforehand.

Friday pies V Bombers

Saturday 1:45 cats v Blues
2:10 Dogs v Crows

4:35 Power v Freo

7:25 Swans V Saints
8:10 Eagles V Hawks
Sunday

1:10 Roos v Dees
3:20 Tigers v Lions
4:40 Suns V Giants

Friday 7.50pm Collingwood v. Essendon MCG - Great way to start the final round of the regular season.

Saturday 1.45pm Sydney v. St Kilda SCG - - Probably the most flexible/ floating game scheduling wise.

Saturday 2.10pm Richmond v. Brisbane MCG - Few weeks to play out but looks like game of the round right now.

Saturday 4.35pm Gold Coast v. GWS MS - Twilight game fits the bills pretty well I think. Would hate to end the season on this game but.

Saturday 7.10pm Geelong v. Carlton GMHBA - Showpiece free to air game on Sat night for the Cats and their fans.

Saturday 7.25pm Port Adelaide v. Fremantle - Good time for this game I think.

Sunday 1.10pm Western Bulldogs v. Adelaide MARS - Shame that this game in in Ballarat. If it was at Marvel it would definitely be my choice for Sunday showpiece game.

Sunday 3.20pm North Melbourne v. Melbourne BA - Like the Swans and Saints fixture could fit anywhere over Saturday or Sunday

Sunday 4.40pm West Coast v. Hawthorn OS - Makes sense again.

I think,
Friday night 7:50pm Richmond VS Brisbane (7)
Saturday Afternoon 1:45pm

I think,
Friday 7:50pm Richmond VS Brisbane (7) Blockbuster timeslot - both teams are looking like top 6

Saturday 1:45pm North Melbourne VS Melbourne (F) Both teams will probably miss finals
Saturday 2:10pm Sydney VS St Kilda (F) Again Both teams will probably miss finals
Saturday 4:35pm Gold Coast VS GWS (F) This timeslot is reserved for an interstate match and this is the one for it
Saturday 7:10pm Collingwood VS Essendon (7) Second block buster- Collingwood top 4 essendon top 8 material
Saturday 7:35pm Port Adelaide VS Freo (F) Both teams could be fighting for the last few finals spots and interstate game

Sunday 1:10pm Geelong VS Carlton (F) Geelong have top spot locked up and carlton are building- most likely match to be moved to a 7 timeslot
Sunday 3:20pm WB vs Adelaide (7) Again the same as port vs freo both teams could be fighting for the final spot in the 8 and a victorian team is playing so 7
Sunday 5:20pm West Coast vs Hawthorn (F) The sunday twilight fixture is reserved for an interstate game and this is the one as hawthorn are a 25/75 to play finals

A usual fixture contains
Friday- Blockbuster 1
Sat 1:45- Victorian game at the g or etihad
Sat 2:10- Interstate game in NSW or QLD or a vic game
Sat 4:35 A twilight which is in NSW OR QLD or SA or WA
Sat 7:10 The 2nd blockbuster fixture or 7 timeslot. its always the 7 time slot apart from when the 7 game is in Perth
Sat 7:35 Another interstate game
Sun 1:10 A Victorian game
Sun 3:20 7 time slot usually a Vic game occasionally a WA or SA game
Sun 5:20 Almost always a WA game

What are your thoughts?

Yeah it should be Rich Bris Friday night but Brisbane are never on Friday night because of NRL though right?
Oh okay i thought they where on a thursday night at home vs Collingwood earlier in the year aswell
I would've thought with Brisbane doing so well you would want that exposure
thanks for the info i would swap them with Collingwood Vs Essendon then>

Yeah Thursday not Friday. I'm not sure if it's because QLDers don't like watching sport on Friday night or the AFL viewers are very low at that time?
