You don't think there's a risk of that happening considering the positions he can play and how he is playing now?

I think the form he's in and being a F.A pretty much makes it a certainty he'll get offers.

I have it’s great, one of the cinemas there is named after the old grand in Footscray

When I was a Special Ed teacher, I would take my students there a fair bit. Great cinema.

You should try the Sun cinema in Yarraville.. fantastic old style cinema!!
Sun is too Yuppi for me now. I remember being forced by the oldies to go watch Greek movies on a Saturday night back in the late sixties & early 70's.

You had 300+ Greeks puffing away on the old Perter Styvesent and Camel plain (Soft packs), when smoking was allowed.:rolleyes::rolleyes:. #passivesmokingPFFTT!! No such thing back then.

Thats not too bad. My folks dragged me to Festival Hall in the 70's to watch Mario Milano Larry O'Dea and Spiros Arion own the ring!! :p

Been there done that, Sad thing is they all believed it was True.

I remember how shattered my dad was one night. Him and mum just watched Ronnie Gray taken to hospital in a tag team with Mario Milano against a couple of 'dirty rotten' Japanese wrestlers.
Dad was so upset, him and mum went to Toto's in Carlton for a pizza... and saw the four of them laughing and drinking there!!

Mum reckons a bit of dad died that night! :p :p

If you are the dogs surely you throw casa a decent deal? He will get that 3 year deal and good luck to him.

Dogs makes sense. However id be much happier if we throw him a 3 year deal.

So...not a Simpson replacement then? You just went from replacement to saying Docherty will fill some of the void.

In that case there are guys like SPS who can step in.

I like Gibbs but think you're misjudging him.
You're kind of twisting my words a bit there, J.

I agreed with your notion that he wouldn't place himself in the positions Simpson does - in front of a KPF, to sit in the hole - for the sake of argument, not because I didn't believe he could do it. Gibbs has done plenty of that sort of thing in a Carlton jumper, and he has far, far more to provide than just that. He could do that for another 5-6 years at AFL level, but for the next 3-4 he could be extremely useful should a) injuries strike mid match, as they so often have, to the midfield, or b) should current setups not be working, and something new be tried.

His commitment to Carlton whilst here cannot be questioned, at all. My desire to get him back is based on whether we can get him across cheaply and because I'm banking on that same level of commitment; he cannot view it merely as a means to pay his way out of his hypothetical gambling debts, or as a retirement plan. He would need to come back with the same attitude he entered his final year with us, and be willing to reproduce his best; otherwise, you're absolutely right there are others who are already in a Carlton jumper that could do both roles.

Kudos for identifying your own bias - we all have it and it can be really difficult to see when it might be influencing our views.

Just because he doesn't fit those two molds specifically, that doesn't mean he doesn't fit a need. Papley = small forward. Baker = small defender? Martin = outside mid/wing who can fill gaps at either end of the ground.

I don't think Martin costs us a first rounder.

I could see it being Martin and change for Kerr/Macreadie and a future second, or something of that nature. That change could well be another player (though there isn't much on the GC list I like the look of), but would more likely be a later pick. I'd also happily pay some of the salary of whichever player went north, if that would help GC to pay/retain some of their other players.

I see Martin as one of those players that just needs a role. That's something Teague is focusing on at the moment, and I think the fit would be a good one. Give Jack a specific role to play (wing) and encourage him to use his strengths (athleticism and disposal) to find space and move the ball to dangerous areas in our forward half.

If it doesn't happen, I won't be too disappointed - but I see a lot of upside in getting Martin onto our list for a reasonable price (ie. not at the expense of a quality small forward).

When i look at Martin, i also look at him with the view that he will be expensive, a 1st rounder is what GC will expect and his $$$$ will be upwards of $700,000 (it was reported earlier in the season he was after $800,000)

Cost changes everything, if we were to bring him in with a 3rd and a future 2nd or by some swapping of fringe players then yes, sign him up.

Papley and Zac williams type players are the ones i want us to push hard for.

If Casboult leaves we not only lose a valuable player, we hamstring the recruitment team and/or lose him for nothing.

Any compensation we may (or probably won’t) get from the AFL will be offset by attracting any other FA. If we are chasing Cognilio or any other FA, Casboult leaving gets us nothing we can use to replace him.

Not sure where you find an AFL quality ruck/fwd/defender for less than what we would need to pay to keep the one we already have and/or with no picks available to use to get them in via trade or draft.

The only good outcome is he stays and continues his renaissance.

Depends what else is on offer for that second round draft pick.

If we're gonna pick up a bloke who's going to be 31 going into next season, you kinda want that to be a free agent or something akin to the Hodge/Mitchell deals where they moved for fourth round picks that wouldn't have likely been used in the draft anyway.

As much as some who don't want him are perhaps distracted by the history, I can guarantee that some who do are distracted by the thought of trading a player for two first round picks then trading him back in for about 25% of that value as a fu** you to Adelaide.

If we want a mature midfielder - Nathan Jones at Melbourne is being lowballed on his next contract, and is a free agent. Toss him a fat contract for two years with triggers for a third on lower money and see what comes of it.

The Crows would be mad to ask for a 2nd rounder for someone they have dropped 3 times, if they want his $$ off the books then surely its a 3rd rounder, then im interested.

I would rather Gibbs than Jones as well

Im a big Gibbs fan and hope you are right. My heart says yes, head says no.

Valid points though and if we do bring him back it'll be great to see.

Wow HO you've got an encyclopedic knowledge of 70's World Championship Wrestling.I was addicted to this and Epic Theatre before I discovered more fun things.

I would guess thay there are some tensions between us (SOS) and The Crows (Reid) and I just don't think they would swallown their pride and send him back to us, even in a desperate move to free up cap space.

A reunion with Ratten at St Kilda, if Ratts gets the full time gig, seems like a feasible outcome.

The thing about Cas is he pretty much makes Goddard and Kerr redundant yet they both have shown enough to keep their spots. If Kerr stays it should be on the Rookie list, probably with Phillips and have Gibbo taking one of their spots on the main list. Goddard stays on as a rookie. Personally I can’t see us going to the rookie draft this season. Lang is another one who if we do pick up 2 players should probably be rookied at best as he soon becomes our ~30th player.
