Recommitted Tom Papley [wanted to return to Victoria, nominated Carlton - didn't get there]

So much bluster and negativity in this thread, but if a trade does eventuate here with Carlton and Sydney over Papley, I feel it will be done reasonably fairly between two professional recruiting/list teams who have shown decent respect to each other in the recent past ie. Sydney becoming involved in the McGovern deal as a circuit breaker, allowing a wanted but potentially surplus Nic Newman go for better opportunity at not much cost.

For mine, Tom Mitchell was traded for pick 14. Contract or no contract, Papley won't be worth pick 8 on his own and something along the lines of shifting later picks may occur either this year or next, in order for Sydney to wrangle and manipulate points for academy/FS selections. Posters might huff and puff and suggest other clubs are willing to pay a good 1st on its own so get stuffed, but if Papley wants to get to Carlton (lots of noise) I think something like this will occur;

Sydney: Pick 8 and pick 44
Carlton: Papley and pick 23

If it's not this years picks, perhaps Sydney's 2020 2nd for our 2020 3rd and some later token pick swapping.

Difference that Mitchell was a fringe player at Swans. Added, with Papley there’s a 4 year contract still to run in the mix.

See where this lands. Quality small forwards are hard to get. Given our list needs, I don’t think pick 8 is too high. If we kept pick 8, what would we do with it instead? Draft another midfielder?

Of course, need to understand what the Swans want, if they’re willing to trade.

Respectfully disagree. Tom played every game for the Grand Final Swans in his last year and averaged 28 disposals and 6 tackles. He was then reportedly offered a 5 year contract by Sydney. That is not a fringe player.

I think Papley is quality, no doubt. His contract situation is murky and we can only speculate on that, but will stand by that I don't think he is worth 8 alone and indeed don't think Carlton should be willing to pay that in isolation regardless of his contract status.

We could do any number of things if we are to keep pick 8. I have enjoyed Silvagni's trading so would look forward to him cooking something up again (hopefully with Adelaide :p) or simply taking it to the draft. It's a good pick in a way as everyone after the first 3 could pretty much have a blanket thrown over them from 4 to around 15-20. One way to look at it is we have a pick worth every bit as much as 4, conversely it's a bit of a lottery so may as well have a later first for all it's worth.

Would be happy for the best available mid if that's how it ended up. Someone like Sam Flanders or Mitch O'Neill (rate Mitch highly).

The lingering uncertainty over Jacob Weitering's future at Carlton seems to be growing by the day.
An unexpected late season verbal spat with new coach David Teague over a switch to permanent key forward has him at the forefront of trade speculation this week, and likely to request a trade to Sydney. Teague sees him as a disruptive influence and simply wants him gone.
Sources say Papley+23 will be heading to the Blues for young Jacob.

Lol. A switch to permanent forward ... when they have McKay, Curnow and McGovern up there? Yet thin enough down back they had to send Casboult there to pinch hit. Yeah nah, makes sense :drunk:

This Tom Browne ditty reads with all the expertise of the bloke who used to sit near the Stork Hotel on Elizabeth St and quack at passers-by. Wasn’t he claiming Papley was a gimme to North just last week?

Weitering not going anywhere, and you’d need an awful lot more than just Papley to get that done.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens next week. Reverse targeting Carlton players ala WB’s in the Griffen-Boyd trade is a smart way for the Swans to go about it if looking for players. Sucks for the Blues though, who I’m sure would be looking at parting with post 66-game rebuild draft currency, not a key player like Weiterbot.

Naturally, i thought it was implied.

OMG yer running with crap created by the famous Tom Browne if you wish to even remotely believe this
than you have no idea

Been reported that Papley has now nominated Carlton.

Is aware he is contracted (one way or another) and prepared to play on at Sydney if no deal can be struck.

It's a joke

Pick 8 + $700k+ P.A is good business for the baggers

Blues list manager in a slight pickle imo .... it’s great for the Blues to be a club on the rise BUT with a next yrs draft having very little value it only really leaves this yrs picks with real currency ....🤔

Oh well. I luv Paps but must have his reasons. If thats what he wants, he'll get there.
Should be an interesting cpl of weeks.

Ahhhh yes, my reliable sources say the "word is" Tom Browne now claims he meant Weitering to North all along. Yes thats it.

Nonsense, Tom Browne doesn't make mistakes
