So much bluster and negativity in this thread, but if a trade does eventuate here with Carlton and Sydney over Papley, I feel it will be done reasonably fairly between two professional recruiting/list teams who have shown decent respect to each other in the recent past ie. Sydney becoming involved in the McGovern deal as a circuit breaker, allowing a wanted but potentially surplus Nic Newman go for better opportunity at not much cost.
For mine, Tom Mitchell was traded for pick 14. Contract or no contract, Papley won't be worth pick 8 on his own and something along the lines of shifting later picks may occur either this year or next, in order for Sydney to wrangle and manipulate points for academy/FS selections. Posters might huff and puff and suggest other clubs are willing to pay a good 1st on its own so get stuffed, but if Papley wants to get to Carlton (lots of noise) I think something like this will occur;
Sydney: Pick 8 and pick 44
Carlton: Papley and pick 23
If it's not this years picks, perhaps Sydney's 2020 2nd for our 2020 3rd and some later token pick swapping.
Difference that Mitchell was a fringe player at Swans. Added, with Papley there’s a 4 year contract still to run in the mix.
See where this lands. Quality small forwards are hard to get. Given our list needs, I don’t think pick 8 is too high. If we kept pick 8, what would we do with it instead? Draft another midfielder?
Of course, need to understand what the Swans want, if they’re willing to trade.
