We also get a lot more news from the UK and US, so have more of an insight into their responses.

That being said, Trump has absolutely cost lives. The absolute worst person to have in charge of a crisis as he is unable to see or care about anything that doesn't directly impact or affect him, and most of his advisors are sycophants rather than field matter experts. I suspect he still genuinely believes he can gamble his way through this by trusting his own instincts.

Spot on. He is the most dangerous type of moron. Consistently ignored the subject matter experts he assembled around him. And the American people will pay for that with their lives. My personal politics are very left leaning but even I would have to concede the LNP federal government in this country has done a pretty decent job of handling the crisis, Ruby Princess aside. And the state Labor government has been very good too.

So, by the 11th of May it will be over six weeks of serious restrictions which have caused serious issues amongst a large cross section of the state.

IMO, there will be little justification for extending it beyond that if the current decrease in cases continues.

Especially as the levels of restriction vary from state to state.

Fair enough, I haven't seen reports of anyone here missing out on baby formula, so I don't see any huge issue.

Agree. The daigu volumes have been built into the volume forecasts for the manufacturers for a long time. If there is a shortage now it is a consequence of panic buying.

It’s just another shit way to undermine and profiteer from the country you are supposed to be a ‘citizen’ of. The fact that you’re Chinese would normally be inconsequential but they’re certainly putting themselves in the firing line at this point in time.

They distru
They had a major poisoning scandal about ten years ago.

They distrust local dairy products but apparently bats are okey dokey.

Serious question though, is this the thread for Trump arguments or is this the one?

just wondering if we don’t need to start one including for his handling of it?

Honestly asking

I think I know of a countries president that has been a lot worse than trump has. Not only has he lied to his own people but the whole world but anyway lets blame Trump and Trump alone. Why are we in this position again.

Some panic buying no doubt and the item limitations has now hindered them going about their business or at least meaning practically speaking they have to go to multiple premises to fill their orders.

Read the comments... 😥

The problem is it is extremely difficult for companies to export these products into China, so there is a huge black market opportunity. Australian government should put pressure on the Chinese government to allow greater access to the China market and if they do not then make it illegal to export these products and police it.

At present, the manufacturer produces enough for Australian demand, they have scope to increase production to supply the Chinese market but they can't just produce unlimited amounts of this in the hope black market sellers purchase it and they will usually strip a store of their stock making it difficult for local consumers to have access to it from time to time. These two tins per transaction limitation is ridiculously easy to get around.

I think it is good our products are in demand, but our government should highlight to the Chinese authorities that the product is coming in regardless of your regulations, by allowing things to function this way our companies still profit from it, our government profits from it, but China doesn't benefit from it coming into the country illegally. It is both our nation's best interest to legalise the trade, that way our manufacturer can increase production for legal export trade.

It hasn't been factored into it because we often have shortages and supermarkets place limitations on transactions, have a long time before the virus.

The nature of their stripping a supermarket of it's entire stock instead of placing bulk orders from the manufacturer to redistribute causes havocs for supermarkets and chemists who do not carry enough stock to both get raided and for local consumption.

Tasmania will close and deep clean two hospitals at the centre of a coronavirus outbreak in the state's northwest. The North West Regional Hospital and North West Private Hospital in Burnie will shut from 7am on Monday with patients to be transferred elsewhere. All hospital staff and their households, more than 1000 people in total, will be forced into quarantine for two weeks.

"I am sorry we need to do this but at the end of the day we need to get on top of this," Premier Peter Gutwein told reporters on Sunday.

"We need to ensure that we can crush this virus at its source, and with this outbreak we need to take these steps."

Cases linked to the hospitals have spiked in recent days and totalled 49 on Sunday afternoon, with 35 health workers among them. A total of 61 cases have been recorded in the northwest, with the overall state figure at 133. The majority of patients will be transferred to the Mersey Community Hospital at nearby Devonport, which has been provided with additional personal protective equipment. Specialist teams will then conduct a "deep clean" of the two closed hospitals.

The state government is aiming to reopen the hospitals after two weeks but it is hoped emergency department and maternity, cancer and ICU services will return after 72 hours. Further restrictions have been placed on retailers in the northwest to mitigate the outbreak. From midnight on Sunday all shops not providing essential services or goods will be closed, including giants K-Mart, Target and Harvey Norman, Mr Gutwein said.

Probably but who knows. Every second Professor has a different POV.

Are you prepared to go back to this level if it all goes south in late June/July?

Yep.

But by the end of May, I’d hazard a guess there will be no active cases in Victoria.

There’s only 280 odd now.

Haven't ScoMo and Dandrews both said that this will be kept going for 'at least six months'?

From what I can gather on social media, people are either happy to cop that, or too scared to say 'this is bullshit' for fear of ostracism.

Not me, though. I'm saying it loud and proud: this is ****ing bullshit. Beyond farcical already.

I read on The Age live update a moment ago that a man in hotel quarantine died and the circumstances are not being treated as suspicious.

Can't help but infer that this may be newspeak for suicide. And we'll see more of them. But apparently those lives don't matter.

Anybody who can't see the inherent contradiction in all of this is beyond hope.

Perhaps you missed the memo: they are now claiming that coronavorus can 'reactivate' in recovered cases.

In other words, if we accept that a coronavirus outbreak is a valid excuse for the government to suspend normal life and liberties, then the days of normal life and liberties are over.

How does not suspicious = suicide?

They can export all they like into China but have to do it on their (chinese) terms, Bellamys is an example of that. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-11-15/bellamys-baby-formula-chinese-takeover-approved/11707190 and then you still get the local Chinese trust issue when a foreign firm sides up with the local joint venture which makes people doubt the product is ridgey didge, so you then have the issue where the grey import products are still considered more valuable. i think the only workable solution would be if the producers sold a line directly to the daigou though say mail order, but good luck getting that to fly and still being able to supply coles and woolies with their exclusivity contracts.
