Bombers impress in testing
Monday, 8 January 2007

The Bombers have returned from their Christmas break today ready to embark on the remainder of the pre-season in terrific shape. In testing conducted this morning, the players registered some of the best results John Quinn has seen in his time at the club.

"We are rapt with the whole of our testing results, but in particular Mark Bolton has run very well in the 3.2km and he is up there with the best we have had in nine years," Quinn explained this afternoon.

"We have done speed testing today and Courtenay Dempsey has run the fastest we have ever had over 20 metres and Jay Neagle is the quickest player we have ever had over 5 metres.

"Over 20 players broken the magical three seconds mark for 20 metres so we are rapt to have that sort of speed at the club," he said

And another speed machine around the club Andrew Lovett is a producing some of his best results in the testing, proving he is well and truly over his hip injury.

"Lovett has run an all time personal best today for his twenty metres, a personal best for his counter movement jump; his skin folds are approaching the best they have been so he is looking promising right across the board."

The results all points to the hard work the players have continued do over their break, proving they are ready to fightback in 2007.

"Some players who have come back from the Christmas break in significantly better shape than they left which has shown they have worked really hard and they mean business," Quinn said.

Training now changes slightly for the players in the lead up to Round 1, with the emphasis shifting towards skills, while there will be a greater focus on individual needs.

This has convinced me that Quinn is a ****************.

Great news about Neagle.

Suprise suprise too bad he has to kick the ball too hehe

I think I read somewhere they are planning to develop him as a defender and that's where the kid himself wants to play.

How tall is he? I think if johns and Gumby come on like they shld he wouldnt fit in the forward line

I think he was drafted at 189-190cm's but he would have grown you'd imagine. He was drafted as a pretty young 17 y/o.

I reckon he'd have Mal Michael covered for height.

The AFL draftee induction was on today, so our latest bunch of draftees wouldn't have been tested. You'd imagine that at the least Davey and Jetta would break 3 seconds.

You and all the other negative supporters, probably the same sort that booo'd Paul Salmon a few ago, must know better than Sheedy and the other selectors as he appears to get a game every week.

I actually think his work rate on the field is high and he presents an option with his hard running when others don't.

Also he is an Essendon player so should be supported not bagged.

Yes he is not in our best 10 players but so what.

Maybe your comments may carry more weight when you play as many games of AFL football as he will for his career.

Like I said in another post if you bumped into him out you would probably be up his a r s e telling him how good he is.

Nah actually I wouldnt because i have met him a few times. great guy, great athlete, high workrate, low skills.

Ah, that's right. I'm an Essendon supporter, that means I can't claim an Essendon player has a weakness.

Please, Mark Bolton is a limited footballer who has been incredibly lucky to represent Essendon as many times as he has and if we are to be any good as a team he won't be getting a game.

This is a discussion board, you're right, I wouldn't say to Mark Bolton - "Hey Mark, you're pretty ordinary." That's not my job, that's why we have coaches, but I wouldn't suck up his a rse either. Infact I wouldn't even cross the road to speak to him. But on a discussion board, we actually are allowed to have a negative opinion of a player, we are able to discuss his shortcomings and we don't have to pretend Mark Bolton is a good footballer. I, like many others have an opinion and we don't have to have played AFL football to express that opinion.

I dont think twice about talking of any of our players negatively if its warranted. I think to date, Ive criticised Rioli due to his weight, Reynolds due to his inability to play, Bolton due to is ineffectiveness, Henneman for that same reason.....in the past, I was never a fan of Somerville or Flood....doesnt mean Id trash them if I met them, I just didnt rate them. Does that make me a terrible supporter?

You can have your opinions but over and over and over and over again gets boring.

Having an opinion negative or positive to me is not ridiculing, mocking, hanging s h i t call it what you like.

The AFL comment was not saying you can't have an opinion it was more that he is going to achieve more sporting wise than most others could only dream of. Why because he is lucky. Your kidding yourselves. If you add up the amount of years the selectors at Essendon have been involved in football you would total close to 150 years. So these selectors are picking a guy who shouldn't be playing with all their experience. Please.

If we are to be successful then he shouldn't play. Did you say the same thing about Paul Hills in 1993.

No worries rate anyone you like negative or positive.

I am just a little sick of the same old theme over and over again.

All the others you mentioned are not going to play 100 to 150 games apart from Rioli who fit was a gun. So he must be doing something right but the fact he is picked every week to most on here is inconceivable and total luck. Perhaps Bolton should buy a tatts ticket he is sooooooo lucky.

I am not a fan of Bolton any more than anyone else, I support him and respect that he gives 110 % for the EFC. Yes he is no James Hird but hey so what.

He's only retained his spot due to our lack of quality KPs. If Laycock, Gumbleton, Neagle press for senior selection, the inclusions of Michael and Lloyd returning, selection will have to be earnt for Bolton and on paper, his stocks are diminshing due to our recent recruiting.

Great the stronger the better. I think his running game also means he can play flanks etc, and I think he is looked at as a spare parts sort of player. But yeah if the side improves to the stage he is not up to being in our best 22 then fine, the stronger the better.

You can have your opinions but over and over and over and over again gets boring.

And by bringing it up again and having a go at those who do have a negative opinion of Mark Bolton, you're no better.

Again, by even saying that you are attempting to belittle the opinion of anyone who hasn't played AFL football. The great thing about footy and these boards is we can all have an opinion regardless of our walk of life. We actually are allowed to disagree with the selectors, with the recruiters, with the coaches.

At the end of the day, one person selects the team and few would doubt that Kevin Sheedy has a point to prove in picking Mark Bolton. He was the one that selected him at the draft when there were more viable options and its his reptuation that is diminished when our number four draft pick has been something of a failure when compared to the bloke who went the pick after him.

Yep, Mark Bolton is a great athlete, he works hard and he has my respect for that. But there are better footballer who got less opportunities and for that reason he is lucky. Don't attempt to belittle my opinion by bringing up some half-baked statistic about 150 years experience, I'm entitled to my opinion and I'll continue to state it.

Mark Bolton is an ordinary footballer, shouldn't be on our list and had the AFL rejected the Rama proposal there is probably every chance he wouldn't be.

If we are to be successful then he shouldn't play. Did you say the same thing about Paul Hills in 1993.

The last time we won a Premiership, Mark Bolton was on the list and played one game for the season. Mark Bolton would not get a game for any of the top four sides last season, infact I'm not sure he'd get a game in any of the top 12 sides. The bloke has played 117 games of AFL football and only three times he's had 20 or more disposals and in just under half those games he's touched the ball less than 10 times. Sorry, that's not very good.

I hope you aren't being critical of Paul Hills there, we can't have that. But no, I didn't say the same thing about Paul Hills, Paul Hills was a much better footballer than Mark Bolton. Paul Hills averaged nearly 18 disposals in a Premiership year, Mark Bolton averages less than 11 for his career.

I'd have to agree with Longy, Bolton is a very good athlete, but struggles to play good football on a regular basis, hes just a spare parts player more than anything.
Having said that, he does work hard on his fitness to overcome his shortcomings in the footy skills area and is rarely injured.
It would be great if some of the young guys can learn to train as hard as him consistently over their careers, because we'd be a super fit side.

Only Sheedy himself knows why Bolton still plays for Essendon.

Tony Deleney is way off the mark. Sitting here, starting to read this interesting thread and enjoying the new bomber news, important news, and all of a sudden.....you wreck it with poxy a "why does everyone be so negative?"
post.

Then it turns into bagging other EFC supporters and the whole thread turns to sh-t! Do you want this board to turn into a PA or Richmond or Collingwood board..all killing each other?

If ya don't like someones negative attitude/comment/post..don't fu-king worry about it. Skip it and forget it. If I had to responed to every negative,d#ck head,@rsehole,ill-informed post.I'd be here 24 hours a day.

Take it easy..tony.its only footy:)

I'd hate to say it but the reason we are the quickest team on paper is all the aboriginals
