What is the worst umpiring decision you have ever seen?

This could take all day.........but 2 that come to mind :

* Couch goaled in the 3rd 1/4 after accepting a pass from Ablett, who had been freed against Martyn ; after viewing the incident, the match review panel had Ablett up for striking......he got off, as he was always going to in grand final week, but it does make you wonder if the 'free' was there

* Ablett goaled in the 2nd 1/4, free against Fairley, a classic 'dive' in the now famous Matty Lloyd style

I know it's water under the bridge, and North have themselves to blame for a lot of easy shots at goal that they missed ; but any Geelong fan who thinks the better team won on the day is kidding themselves.

Would North have beaten the Eagles in the '94 GF ? No idea........but I'm certain they would have put up a better effort than the Cats did.

Thanks for that. I forgot the Ablett match review thing. All I remember about that game was the last 60-90 seconds and how I was so far on the edge of my seat if I was any further forward I'd have fallen off.

As for the comment highlighted, no arguments from me there. I think our "grand final" was actually the Prelim. We were probably mentally and physically spent going into the Grand Final. But take nothing away from the Eagles, they were awesome on the first Saturday in October (which the grand final was played on that year)

In terms of decision making, Goldspink is actually one of the best umpires out there. Unfortunately, he is a petty little man on the field though....


Any incorrect decision by a goal umpire is unacceptable- I mean how hard can it be when that's your only job?
So based on that the worst decision I've seen is the point awarded to Aussie Jones in the dying seconds versus Brisbane at the dome. Very pleased it happened, but it was a disgrace...

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet,but it was actually Goldspink who paid that

AFL said it was a correct decision with the Mitchell Out of Bounds.

Goldspink is a Bulldogs fan even though most Hawks fans will have you think otherwise!

I'd like to get your opinion on the worst umpiring decision you have ever seen. It could be in any grade, or league, but I'm sure there have been some absolutely abysmal decisions paid by those twerps in white, orange, yellow, red, etc.

To get the ball rolling, I'll list a couple of absolute howlers I've seen.

1. Darren Milburn vs Richmond: Milburn is pinned up against the boundary line by his opponent, bounces the ball with one hand, runs around his opponent, picks up the ball and goes to run off. Umpire runs in and pings Milburn for dropping the ball, when at no time did his opponent tackle him.

2. Corey Enright vs Western Bulldogs: Enright is on the wing, running to the ball with an opponent. Taps the ball with both hands into the ground so it bounces in the direction of Darren Milburn running past. Umpire runs in and pings Enright for throwing the ball.

3. Gary Ablett Snr vs Richmond: Ablett is playing at full forward. Leads out from the goal square, with his opponent running behind him. Opponent slips over and is out of the contest. Umpire runs in and pings Ablett for pushing him in the back.

There's probably heaps more, but they're the ones that come readily to mind.

That was technically 'dropping the ball'. The Ump was right.
Milburn wasn't bounching it, he dropped it behind his back......Harsh, but fair.

Could have been a nice trick....if he got away with it.

No such thing as a free for 'dropping the ball'. You can be penalised for throwing it ; or for failing to dispose of it correctly when tackled. But if you drop the ball when you're not tackled, it's just 'play on'.

Pretty much got evened up when the umps ignored Judd and Sampi being r*ped in a pack so that Barry could sail in and take a mark to win them a GF!

I'll throw one in.....2001, the rematch after Libba/Knights/Campbell/Every Dog Has it's Day in Rd 17. Late in the match (Last Minute) Judas Brown gets his head ripped off 15m from goal, not seen. Tiges win by less than a kick, Dogs miss finals.

2002 Grand Final, ball goes up into Collingwoods forward line, Tazza leads, gets mugged, has his wallet stolen n is molested by the orange roughy on the way down, obvious free kick but called play on..

Ball goes up to Lions forward line , pack, Lynch goes down, arms flailing, squealing like a pig despite noone touching him..Free kick straight in front of goals..Lynch goals!

Result: 2 goal turnaround , Lions win flag...2 shocking decisions in space of a few minutes which more than likely decided the outcome of this match

Read what I wrote, Bozo ! (Or get an adult to read it for you !) I said you can't be penalised for dropping the ball, UNLESS you do it when you've been tackled. I was replying to a poster who said that some Geelong player should have been freed for 'dropping the ball' even though he hadn't been tackled.
