The whole problem with the intent grading is going to rear its head with Lynch this week.
He'll get a week for using a swinging arm gut punch from behind his opponent to generate separation in a situation where he then took an uncontest mark and kicked a goal. Meanwhile other players get the same penalty for being slightly clumsy while contesting the ball or tackling.
That sort of action, a deliberate punch from behind, 70m from the ball, should be a straight to the tribunal, 3+ weeks type penalty.
If they couldn't make "in play" as a grading criteria stick because everyone is always "in play", how about just measuring the distance from the ball at the time of the contact? Bands like 0-3m, 3-10m, 10-50m and 50+m, with a further distance band meaning a higher penalty.
