Do you really trust Vardy to be our depth after his past couple years? He’s been woeful when played. Williams is a forward who is a part time ruck, rather than the other way around.

We’d then be relying on Jamison as our only full time proper ruckman, and, as you said, he’s still very raw.

HickGod is the only ruck depth we have.

Naitanui is an incredible player and influences games like few other rucks currently in the game (maybe Grundy & Gawn). If NN goes down, it won't matter whether we have Hickey, Vardy or Williams taking his place. Nor am I convinced that a ruck can have any influence on the contest unless they're of NN's ilk.

So Hickey, a 29 year old 2nd string ruck, for a pick in the 20's seems value. Not just for the pick we receive, but for the very little that we actually lose.

Hello all, I come in peace. It's an odd one Witherden, I think on our Lions boards he was talked about during the year simply because he was behind Birchell and Rich and then Lester had a huge turn around to save his career (also married to Zorko's sister) and then Starcevich got really going and we had Answerth also going great of half back and of course Ah Chee being able to be swung back or forward. Witherden is the most likely replacement for Birchell and Rich as the 'director' coming out of the backline. The 'Luke Hodge" type role.

He has 2 years on his contract and from social media is currently away with the main bunch of players and their partners in far north Qld living in up. He is close mates with a number of them particularly Cam Rayner. While I can see he might leave for opportunities next year but the year after that, his position is quite clear Birtchell and Rich will be gone. Starcevich will move to the mid field or the wing to replace Mitch Robinson

when he retires. He was also seen as a future leader for us. The knock on him is that he is a bit slow in leg speed and his disposal efficiency fell away but then his game this year when he returned was probably his best for the club. Never say never, but if you guys are offing big big money he might go, coach Fagan is all about development and Witherden with Luke Hodge coaching him also seems well and truly part of our future. We don't need draft picks this year, all we really need now is a young ruckman to replace Steph Martin if he goes or retires.

The funny thing is Sydney did similar with Buddy and the AFL slapped them with draft/trade bans (as they were a top team getting a free agent).

Then Lynch to Richmond and Cameron to Geelong and no bans in sight.... [emoji849]

I think we were interested in Clark because we had Brander that we thought might be an asset to them and superfluous to our needs.

To go out and trade away your high draft picks or break your back for Clark is ridiculous. Freo need to just ****ing draft, develop and coach their own players.

We can never have enough of that!

He was the kick out specialist for a while at Brissy, no reason why he can't be Hurn's replacement in that role. Plus would allow Duggan to move into the midfield more.

Pretty keen for this deal to go through, assuming it's not just smoke.
And we have a pretty good history bringing in Brisbane players, and this seems no different.

Nice to see Witherden’s name being thrown around. I doubt we jag him but always good to have more than 1 player to speculate about over the next couple of weeks haha

I rate him higher than Clark too - not that I think Geelong will be keen to see him go.

I know we have Hurn in his last year and Jetta with 1 foot out the door (done I think), but guys like Nelson, Cole, Duggan (obvious midfield potential that must continue to be expand Rotham are all options back there, with Brander supposedly continuing his transformation into Brent Staker by flapping around there for a bit next season.

I guess with Watson gone also and Jetta on his way they may be looking for more depth back there.

What will it take?
