McDougall at the Dogs

I know two thirds of you reckon he's a waste of space, and the rest wish him well at the Dogs.

FWIW, recent Dogs training reports reckon he's doing really well, leading well and taking lots of contested marks. He may well be a player for us.

And how are your lot travelling?

In particular, how are my two favourite Eagles Kerr and Hunter going?

Nothings changed then. He always trained the house down but come round 1 the workrate falls away.

Eagles are having one of there best pre season ever. Kerr was a standout early on but now hes on light training. Hunter is in great form as ususal

after watching doogs in the round 15ish game against the pies i think he can make it. He presented well but looked like it had been a long time since playing at that level.

Given the foot skills that the dogs have I think he could do really well and play 150 games or his work rate could drop off and be delisted at the end of the year

WC really were not in a position to change the forward line game plan that late in the season

I thought the exact opposite that game. Tries to play like Ash Hansen except he doesnt have the same work ethic. That game IIRC he only got 2 contested possessions for the whole game and he only played on like the 3rd best tall defender. Hes not a FF.

A fixed position is a bit tricky with us - Eade likes to switch players around a lot.

I really can't see him fitting in at any other club but the dogs. They do need a bit of height, so he has the chance to have an actual playing AFL career. Didn't get much of a chance at the eagles, but obviously wasn't good enough for our inconsistant forward line. A gamble but odds wouldn't be too bad with him turning out to be a position holder at the dogs.

Rubbish, he 'only' took 2 contested marks, and had 3 contested possessions in that game. By comparison, Ashley Hansen averaged 0.3 of a contested mark a game, and 0.6 of a contested possession a game throughout 2006.

McDougall, has done his dash at West Coast, but he was ********ing unlucky to be dropped after the game against the pies- his numbers after over a season on the sideline more than justified a recall.

I was sorry to see him go, but I think the biggest problem was that he was too mentally fragile to fit in at the hyper-competitive environment at West Coast- he wasn't a coach or fan favourite, and over the last few years he was always playing with one eye on the bench, which is not surprising given how many people were jockeying for the one position.

He has real ability, and I think he'll start very well at the Dogs, just because he'll get more of an opportunity to show his worth, due to their being less talls gunning for his spot. If he trains well he'll be able to play during the NAB without worrying about his position. If he has a few good ones and doesn't get injured he'll improve quickly as his confidence rises, and from there things could snowball. I think he'll have a far better career at the Doggies than at West Coast, and I wouldn't begrudge him that- he just didn't fit in with the environment here, and he's the kind of player who is always going to require mental 'micromanagement'.

Well that is where he kicked the most goals at the Eagles so he might do okay for you, provided that your midfield kicks the ball to him a fair bit.

His work at training has been excellent, although he wasn't so good today. He had strapping on his knee and was complaining of it swelling up, he had to get it restrapped.

He lost the ball today and tried to pick it up below his knees, knocked it to an opponent, but then his following chase and tackle was a bit weak. I understand this may have been a failing of his?

Later he got called over and was given a big spray by Eade for doing something wrong in a handball drill but I'm not sure what.

I thought that Doogs did OK today. Gave Harris a bit of a touch up in the match practice even though things werent going 100% for him.

IMO, Doogs is a little less than average with his set shots. C-, if you will.

Just looking at his stats he's kicked 48.40 in his career, so make of that what you can/will.

Um, it's a shame to hear about his minor injury; I'll be reading the Doggies training reports with interest to see how he handles it.

As for the missed tackle, I think it's fair to say that McDougalls intensity has been questioned a lot over his Eagles career.

Would you Bulldog guys say that McDougall is in most peoples best 22 at this stage?

Yes he is. Darcy has been training in the FF role & has showed some good signs, but was missing again from training today.

Doogs has done better. We desperately need a tall 2nd option in the forward line to change our gameplan so Doogs will most likely get his chance.

Doogs isnt a good shot from goal. Its why he is a CHF and not a FF. I dont think hes played the role of a FF for about 2 years now. Bulldogs should leave Johnno at FF and play McDougall as CHF if they want to incorporate him into the team.

I wouldn't hold your breath though - Eagles fans already know how positive signs from Doogs can turn out to be completely false when the crunch comes.

I guess what I'm saying is don't read too much into Doogs's form until he puts in long term.
