Go 2 years now, then a 3 year deal after that when he’s played about 100 games.

And the Bulldogs would be beside themselves if we did that....How desperate are they for a decent ruckman?, especially one that came from their favoured Calder Cannons.....they'd be all over him like a rash.

Even with a 4 year contract, he can still leave. Contracts are basically irrelevant these days. We see players break contract every year.

He's not elite (top 3 or 4 ruckman) but he is still improving and will be more than adequate for a finals push in 4 years time.

As we all know, data can be manipulated to show any result you like. I never take any data for granted, unless its pure mathematical data, data around anything living is too unpredictable. So yes, I agree with you regarding CD.

What we need is someone young to come in under his wing and force ROB to get better or be surpassed by the younger player.

I would say he is trending towards being a good ruckman, but tags like "elite" should only be given to guys like Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn etc.

Grundy's performances last year - in the first year of a VERY big contract - were well below his previous standard. He got something like 7 x ~$1m (prior to COVID adjustments, obviously) didn't he? I'd rather have a good ruckman like O'Brien on this contract than an elite ruckman like Grundy on that contract.

There's also the issue of our list profile. Take O'Brien out, and who is our next ruckman? Frampton? That is a long way back to second place. O'Brien's performances combined with our needs more than justify this contract, I reckon. Hell, we're lucky he's still here at all after we made him bide his time in the SANFL through Sauce's last full season when Sauce was getting picked despite being unable to even get off the ground at centre bounces. He probably deserves an extra year tacked on the contract just as an apology for that.

ROB is a bloke that gives his all absolutely but he will never be elite as in the top 2 or 3 Rucks in the AFL. Never.
