Watching the game last night i wasnt too overly impressed with Hartlett.

Though after watching it again today he did do some good things, but was getting lost around the ground, stands still when he should be mobile and is a little slow to get off the mark when chasing and leading etc.

Considering he played up forward for most of the game, dropped back a little in defense when waite went forward last night, do you think he has a spot in the team!!

I still think he is a better backman than forward!!

i hate to say but i can't find him a spot in our 22 at the moment. Our backline seems secure at the moment and we have Bower also developing as a replacement and Whitnall can go down back. Forward line has a lot of talls, and edwards could slot in there if he gets a game.

Definately not in our 22 but I would play him ahead of Bower next week.

He is only 20 and he is a good young player. He probaly wonjt play more then half the games this season but he would be next year if he keeps his good work up. I can see Hartlett named in the emergencies nearly every week so if there is a serious injury to our backline or forwardline he would almost first pick to bring in the team. I liked the fact he wasnt afraid to have a shot at gaol when he was outside 50.

Or you could look at it the other way...

Hasnt played much footy for 2 years.

Fears that we may have wasted a pick on a young guy who just cant get out there.

Gets a chance.

plays Centre half Forward and then Centre Half Back. Nice Switch!

Takes at least 3 marks leading out to Centre Half Forward resulting in 2 goals.

Not dominating, but useful. Waite switch takes place as the Blues start to dominate. Hartlett goes back to a role in defence and doesnt give up a goal..

For a guy we havent seen much and who hasnt played much I think he was serviceable and did a few nice things. This has to be good for his confidence. I would judge him in a couple of months time.

Was impressed with what I saw from my 2nd favourite player.

He did some very good things, and can add a lot to the team-height, strength, skill, and versatility. I'm not expecting him to dominate, and neither should you. We just want him to be useful for the time being, which is exactly what he proved to be.

At around 195 cm and 95kg, he is a big boy at only 20 years old. Has a huge kick, one of the biggest at the club, and is extremely accurate by foot as well. Has a bit of mongrel about him, certainly isn't afraid of the rough stuff. And he can take a contested mark, which is one of the things we have been crying out for.

The best thing about him is that he is versatile, and as such I liken him to Bradshaw-equally capable both back and forward, maybe a bit more so down back.

He could be a very important player for us, maybe swapping back and forth with Whitnall to mix it up a little. He looked good last night, considering it was one of his first games back since injury. Is injury prone, but if he can stay away from the injuries he will be a valuable player.

Right now he isn't in our best 22, but he is close. By the end of the season I think he will be.

Great post :thumbsu:

Give the boy a bit of time, and a bit of experience, and the chance to settle in to AFL and we may well have a very good player on our hands.

Be brilliant to be able to rotate him and Waite :)

GO BLUES!

I was happy with his game last night, good to see him play well after all he's been through. Hopefully he's past all his injury concerns and gets a good run, wouldn't have him in the 22 ATM but if someone's injured atleast we know we've got a decent tall in the VFL. In a year or two he could very possibly be in our starting lineup.

Thought he did more than Bower last night, not that Bower didn't do some good things too but Hartlett seemed to read things a little better.

Over the last couple of years we have been lucky with injuries. If we had lost a KPP player we would have been in serious strouble. But now if we hapen to lose someone along the spine we have heaps of players able ot fill the holes. Hartlett is greta to have on the list no matter what.

If setanta gets injured we can used him as FB or CHB and at 195cm 95kg isnt giving away any hight or strength.

If Kennedy goes down we have instant CHF.

If Fevola gets injured (or reported) we can try out having twin towers with Harts and J.K and will be difficult for defenders to match up ala Richmond in the early 90's.

Even if Hartlett isn't in our top 22 he is a great depth player

I agree...thought he was pretty good, especially considering how much 1st football he has played. Also, I think he spent some time on the pine. We saw how good it was to have someone to switch with Waite at CHB, not sure if Kennedy can do that. If he and Bower and Kennedy all come on, we are going to struggle to fit them all in the team along with Thornton, O'Hailpin, Waite and Whitnall.

Handy guy to have around. Kennedy looks like a better prospect at this stage, but as insurance for Fev/Kennedy he's certainly worth keeping.

Big versatile, talented - just needs to get into the flow of it. But a great depth player, and will probably tear up the reserves at some point...

Was impressed with his first game since last years Wizard CUp vs Geelong. Kingsley kicked 8 on him that night.

Anyway, thought he did some really good things, looks a good size and used the ball well. He will only get better with more footy under his belt, remebering that this was his first full injury free pre-season. Hes a bit more developed then Paul Bower atm and he's more flexible then Saddington.

With a good year of a mixture of VFL and AFL, i think he will improve and could be a regular by seasons mid to end.

Would be good to have Thornton, Waite, O'hAlpin and Hartlett in defence, a good mix to match up on most forward lines, and throw in Walker and Carrazzo, handy defence.

Seriously intelligent post.:thumbsu:

With Thornton, Waite and Setanta holding down the 3 tall spots down back, and Fevola, Whitnall and Kennedy likewise up forward, he will have to bide his time with the Ants in the early part of the season.

Would love to see him get a game with Carlton when the season proper is underway, but I would think he'd have to wait for an injury to one of those 6 players mentioned.

Looks a lot quicker and more agile than Kennedy and seems to have a much better kick on him. I would give him another game. Also like tha little bit of mongrel he seems to have, goes hard at the contest.

Up until last night I actually felt that he was perhaps going to be a lost talent a bit like Norman and Angwin. However last night I saw some things in him that gave me hope. I especially liked one of his strong overhead grabs around hf.

He has height and mobility and seems to have a strong boot. Also seems to have an air of confidence about him at times. However also seems to have an air of arrogance aswell. I think this will be the key. He has imo the ability and the aethletisism to be very good. If he can harness his mind then there should be no problems.

Overall not as talented as Angwin but probably the equal of Norman and better than Bryan.

I'd have him in front of Norman already.

I wouldn't. Norman played some pretty good footy early on and was a real talent. It's a shame really that he turned out the way he did.

I'm not saying Hartlett isn't as talented as Norman or anything like that, just that he has a bit of work to do.

Norman was a real loss. He was a big kid and would probably be playing Waite's role now if he had his head screwed on. He also had a beautiful long kick on him.

Having said that, I am very optimistic about Hartlett.

One thing to consider is the future. Fev is 26. Let's give him 5 more years in the game as a reasonable estimate. Could be more, could be less.

If that's the case, Kennedy will be 24yo and Hartlett 25yo by the time Fev leaves the game. These are the ages when KKP players start to really hit their straps. We need to plan for this time, as its no use having a 21yo trying to hold down FF after Fev leaves. Sheez, just think of Fevola himself at 21.

Don't want to leave it like the ruck and start to draft replacements when its too late. I think Hartlett might not be in our best 22 right now, but we've got to play the boy whenever its reasonable to. Either give him enough games to develop, or find out he can't play the game, move him on and get someone who can fill the void that will be left by Fev's eventual departure.
