Is it any different to keeping Billings..?

Well billings is a top 10 player who will take a haircut if he stays. Yes, I'd say its different to Billings as billings also doesn't have an injury prone history.

Kelly has been injured the best part of 3 years. Imagine if we got an injury plagued player on a large wage and he did an injury?
Think we have a bloke on the list like that, that everyone whines about. Imagine having one that takes up nealry a tenth of the salary cap 🤣🤣🤣

If Billings stays for $650k a year over 3 years I would be happy with that.
100k incentive each year if her is top 5 best and fairest
But if he is lured elsewhere we should look to replace him

Hey, he is offered 700k a year and gets band one, I'd be saying cya later. But I'd be matching anything less

Steele signed on for $650 a year
Billings should be on around $500k in that case

Billing’s hasn’t turned out like a Bontempelli or Petracca but he is a bloody good footballer. He is also on e of a few saints who we drafted and developed. These are the players that are the heart and soul of a club. So it’s very dangerous to let these guys go, especially considering the amount of new faces we have brought in.

if we let him go, it will be the first move of a new rebuild.

Funny, I was thinking about the Steele contract the other day.
Wasn’t the PR about this something to do with taking less than the market and what an inspiration to the team?
Now, that may be true but equally it may say something about where Gallagher is taking this list.
Bear with me.
We all recognise that the list quality, demographic and structure is not great.
That’s been addressed in part, but of course it is an ongoing project.
One issue is addressed, another appears.
We see this weekly over the season.
However of equal importance, perhaps even of more importance, is the bit we never see.
Which is the components and structure of the salary cap: by player, by grading, by year.
Gallagher is a numbers man: he understands them.
Given the length of contracts, it is not feasible to implement any marked and broad based change in one hit.
However due to Covid, the subsequent 7% hit across all contracts for this year, and the ending of a number of legacy contracts, I am wondering whether we are seeing a subtle change in how our contracts will be structured going forward.
Like: here is our best player, here is our leader, he gets paid $650k.
That is the benchmark upon which other future contracts are based.
Now how much do you want Jack?

We should be able to understand both the strategy and the goal.
Being the tangible benefits: fairness of remuneration, equity amongst the players, and the discipline in salary proposals to existing players and potential players.
IIRC, Geelong had a similar structure back in the Thompson era.
That seemed to work for them.

People will raise the Hill, Hannebery contracts as a counter argument.
Perhaps the alleged but as yet unsigned Ming contract too.

But no one really knows the detail of player payments, certainly no one here, nor the details of a club’s salary cap.
That last in particular is more safely guarded than the team‘s intellectual property.
Some people may have good, educated, industry knowledge - but not the whole story.

Of course the counter argument to the Hannebery, Hill and potential Ming contracts is the disciplined contract negotiation with Crouch and Adelaide.

I’m only really posing the question on contracts going forward, not contracts in place.
Pure speculation on my part I suppose.
But I do wonder if there is a broader strategy in play.
I suspect that there is.

This one is simple for me:

If Billings wants to stay for what he's actually worth then that's good.

If another club wants to offer overs for him... we'd at least have to look at the compo. A top 10 pick would have me in deep thought haha

So what would it take to get Ben King this year? On the GC forum an ITK is adamant big problems at Gold Coast with the coach and playing group. Could be time to strike.
Billings compo and future second pic?

I’m late to the party here but have we discussed letting Billings go and going after to Kelly..?? Billings to North Then Kelly to Saints..? Will only cost us $250k extra a year..? And very much an upgrade..? If already discussed sorry but it should be something we look at.

so
Billings out Kelly in
2 draft picks in the top 10.
Ours and the compo

it’s a no brainer

We don't get any compo for Billings if we sign a big free agent.

Sean Darcy quietly underrated this season. One of the top ruckmen and he’s only 23. That’s a couple years younger than Marshall, he’s posting numbers and averages better than Nic Nat and Ryder in some areas. Could play the Ryder role alongside Marshall for 10+ years! What do we need to get him?

Ben King will happen

This year or next year? He’s contracted for another 12 months.

I’m not sure the Suns would want to trade him and we don’t have the draft capital to tempt them, unless we have players who would interest them and want to play up there.

We need to hit the draft this year.

Is Ben King really a priority? I'd take him but IMO we are in much more desperate need of skillful, ball-winning mids and a key defender. The price for King would be something along the lines of 2 first rounders and Josh Battle. If we could convince Kelly or Merrett to come then I'd be willing to pay that price, but we have more urgent holes to fill. The two Kings really only fit in the team if we plan on using Marshall as the number one ruck as well. Unless Ben is willing to stop kicking goals and go into defence.

Be Geelong, because that's where he's going

Billings compensation would be the key here.

Out: Billings compo, 2022 first round
In: Bing and change.
Use our own 2021 first on a mid.

Now if GCS were interested in Battle, send him for a later first round pick in lieu of change in the Bing deal.
