Part 2 of this thread is here:

Williams and Saad to a lesser extent have copped it this season but Jack Martin is as bad if not worse….he’s had a few injuries since coming to the blues but he must play 2-3 better than average games a season. He’s just a lazy and soft footballer. Provides nothing.

Cripps and Doherty also need a kick up the bum…their leadership this season has been deplorable….Sam Walsh needs to be given the captaincy asap…Carlton as club were summed up tonight with their lack of support for Walsh who copped a heavy tag.

Huge issues both on and off the field for the blues…another huge off-season awaits

Martin can and has played some good footy for us. Was great against the Pies in round 2 before picking up an injury.

For some reason he was rushed back in with no game time at VFL level let alone any VFL form. Looks like he’s playing through some sort of pain.

Our fitness, conditioning and player management in general is terrible. The same thing is happening with Fisher. There are some talented kids missing out who deserve a go, yet we still play underdone players.

And getting Betts back, as a 32 year old. Why? He’s so overrated it’s not funny. He kicks 2-3 goals every 3rd week.
Agreed but it's slim pickings for the Blues in this area. Next best small forward is Micky Gibbons. Solid young player - brave as you can get. But compare it to the top end clubs and it's chalk and cheese.

Martin plays a couple of good games a year, nowhere near the value you are paying him for.

When he is bad he is horrific, did nothing tonight.

His contract size is a bigfooty myth. Heavily front ended but not huge money wise.

He needs to rest up for a game or two, Fisher was also rushed back after 10 weeks out with no VFL and is clearly underdone.

We have Honey in the 2s playing really good footy who for some reason can’t get a look in. We have what was a ridiculously talented HFF in SPS playing in the back pocket. Playing players underdone never works. The mismanagement is just crazy.

That’s my point…he would play 2-3 games at a high level each season and one is usually against Richmond in round 1 that Carlton lose…

what he showed at gc early on, he should nearly be Carlton’s best player now…he should be dropped with what he’s output is…he’s weak defensively, never attacks or runs with the ball…what exactly is his role??

Why is Liam stocker playing as a back pocket?

Why have sps, setrerfield, Dow, O’Brien not developed?

shows where Carlton are currently at..

Just a bunch of mercenaries playing for a paycheck, just like st kinda.

Both had caretaker coaches come in get a few cheap wins ,then all of a sudden their boards think they're "in the window" so they load up with a bunch of overpriced overrated B graders
.
The end result is what your seeing now

Further details have emerged around the lucrative — and massively front-ended — Carlton contract Jack Martin is set to sign, with the outgoing Sun reportedly poised to earn approximately $2 million in his first two seasons at the Blues.

After it was revealed on Monday that Martin, who’s expected to land at the Blues in the pre-season draft, would receive more than a $1 million in 2020, The Age reported on Thursday night that terms in Martin’s Carlton contract also guarantee him around $1 million in 2021.

It means Martin, according to the report, could be among the highest-paid players at Carlton over the next two AFL seasons. However as the proposed deal is a five-year contract worth around $3.1 million — potentially $3.5 million if he reaches certain incentives across the tenure — Martin will be paid significantly less money in his final three seasons.

It’s a significant salary boost for Martin, who was reportedly paid around $600,000 in 2019.

The Age suggested the major reason why Martin’s contract is so heavily front-loaded was to ensure the safest possible passage to Carlton. The deal helps prevent the two teams that pick before Carlton in the pre-season draft — Martin’s current team, Gold Coast Suns, and Melbourne — from picking him up.

Their back line frightens no one. Their supposed best defender (Jones) prefers to attack as his first instinct. Williams was told by the club he was a midfielder, so asked to be paid like one. Everyone in the terraces knew he was not one. Saad was an overindulgence that seemed to be more about sticking it to EFC. The midfield is simply shallow, slow and worked over. And the forward line is a 1 trick pony, who has a mental and physical goal kicking issue to sort out. (I lived the Richo era). So we now know which is the desirable cheating method. Chemical over Financial.

Someone on ABC last week made a valid point - teams they've lost to:
Richmond, Collingwood, Port Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, Sydney, West Coast, GWS

How many of those games would they actually be expected to win? Zero.
Is there any actual point to this blind rage at Carlton losing 9 games they were expected to lose?

He was on overs last year and is on overs this year. He will be on less than the AFL average over the next three and it’ll be a sweet deal, should we manage and use him correctly (I don’t have much faith).

It is hardly a ridiculous contract. Far more concerned about the cash paid to McGovern and Curnow. Curnow’s issues were unpredictable but they still hurt. It’s a lot of money tied into rehab.

Leaving aside the Pies, if you think you're a finals team, at least one of them right? Hard to make finals if you can only beat teams 9 and down (largely pointless too).

Realistically, they have enough playing talent to beat every team, but have probably the equal worst mentality in the league. Be curious what the review says the reason/s is/are.

So in other words their whole list is pox.

There is no other way to sugar coat it. For the amount of money they've spent on Williams, Saad and Martin is really perplexing. To bring back Betts when he was cooked just for that fairytale finish is again just another bizarre list management.

Teagues in trouble.

You’d think at least a couple statistically if we wanted to be around the mark, but a big reason we haven’t started favourites is our formline this year. It’s a reinforcing loop.

Walk away from that deal like bandits.

Add in Williams and they have two HBF's on big money yet they let Tuohy leave because they didn't want to pay him enough... and he's playing better footy than those two as well. For less money.

Keep the bloke you had and save cap space and picks to use on other needs.

Williams joined the Blues on a five-year deal foxfooty.com.au senior reporter Tom Morris told On The Couch was worth around $850,000 to $900,000 a season.

Saad’s decision to leave Essendon at the end of last year led to a tense back-and-forth between the Bombers and Carlton, with the Blues eventually parting with Pick 8 and Pick 87 in exchange for the 26-year-old, Pick 48 and Pick 78, with his five-year deal estimated to be around $650,000 a season.

Tuohy is done.
