If we're serious about developing our younger midfielders, then there's probably only room for 1 of Laird/Crouch in the team. Crouch is out of contract this year, and is a likely RFA target. Laird is contracted until 2026. It's fairly obvious which one is the more likely to be departing...

How many picks at the draft do you see us using?

Don't hear Cooper's name mentioned too often on here but he's right up there with top SA boys.....Could be the small forward/mid we need with his wheels and super talent. Speaks as well as any draftee I've ever heard.

Just watched some of his higllghts. He's got some nice speed and a good set shot. Looks good enough in traffic and hard enough at the contest to play midfield as well.

I think that pesky ankle injury he did down at the Crows dropped him off the radar a bit. Back with a vengeance now.

AFL academy member And runner up to Tom Powell in last years U18 medal - you’re spot on, shouldn’t be under estimated. Should be gone by 25 I think

Very impressive package bicks. I really like his calm one take and options. Highly skilled. Just what we need a good ball user who makes good decisions with ball in hand

Trading down secured us Fischer McAsey who has to now been underwhelming but also landed us Luke Pedlar for the following year, if it means that kind of outcome hmmmm?
Its just a big risk, if we rate 3 guys exactly even and are happy to take any of them, then sure trade down a couple of spots if it is going to be worth it. But if we have one mid that we rate higher and we aren't sure if he is going to be available, then we need to keep our pick and take him while we have the chance.

I still think that with the downgrade trade with GWS, we were happy with either Stephen's or McAsey, that's why we were more comfortable dropping down a couple of spots as we knew we would get one of them.

Depends on whether or not the AFL returns list sizes back their pre-COVID levels.

Probably only 2-3 in the ND if they'd don't, maybe 4-5 if they do. Don't be surprised if our RD is limited to Cat B rookies this year, with at least 1 of Borlase/Newchurch being culled to make way for Dudley.

Our ability to trade in players is extremely limited this year if the AFL don't reinstate the previous list sizes.

Haven't seen anything of Cooper this year, how's his defensive pressure?

Could be a nice X-Factor type pickup at our 2nd round selection

So around the Crouch compo pick? 🤔

I understand that Laird has a long term contract, nevertheless, why not explore what he is worth at the trade table if we want another top 10 pick.

No - I'm saying move both on.
Nah no way, that's throwing our kids to the wolves. Need ideally two or so very good, experienced bodies rotating through to shield our kids somewhat

It really depends on the price. Gold Coast are under immense pressure. I feel like they are going to do a Weller like crime of the century deal. We should always be open to taking advantage of that.

Other than them I can’t really see any club offering us overs for Laird. So it’s pretty pointless to think about too much.

Laird is better than a poke in the eye but you wouldn’t really care that he wasn’t on your list.

I agree. Keep Laird and Keays given one has a long contract and the other wouldn't return much at trade anyway. And is good for culture and standard of attack on the ball required.
Crouch is uncontacted and may fetch a decent contract.
Easy decision even though I do actually rate Matt.
The task is for the next batch - Schoenberg, Pedlar, Berry, Milera, Hately, O'Connor, McHenry, 2021 first etc to break through and replace Laird and Keays in the long term. It won't happen overnight but if we are to become a top four side one of them likely doesn't fit into the best 22.

Yeah I tend to agree somewhat

That said, both Keays and Laird I think have places in our side for the next few years - although it probably means Laird back to defence at some point when he hits his 30’s (think Matthew Boyd)

If someone offered an early pick for Laird you'd take that every day of the week and just keep Matt Crouch and Keayes as the mature bodies in the middle.

Indeed. Of course, they'll probably leave the list size reveal until 6pm on the last day before the draft starts. That will make the trading interesting (risky). ;)

Let’s give Mcasey the grace of a full pre season at end of year and see where he’s at as a 3rd yr Key position player ( usually when they start showing something unless freakish talents like Weitering )

We wouldn't be shite if we had two or so very good. We have battlers, workman that are hacks.

If GC said here's our 1st for Laird i would say start the car and have no issue Crouch going as FA.

Schoenbergs 3rd year, big pre season and say here Harry your full time. When you need a rest swap with Sloane
Pedlar and Berry here you go, you're going to spend 50% in the middle each rotating forward and off the bench.
Pick 3-4 your starting 1st game and rotating with Keays even if its only 20% in the middle.

GC 1st, McHenry, Jones, Milera, Murphy, Seedsman, Smith can fill in the gaps.

I dont get this thought of us having a tight list. We have been crap and there's 5-6 easy calls and potentially 8 list changes with FA if we wanted to go that way that barely/don't affect this years side.
These aren't tough calls

Lynch, Murray, O'Connor & Kelly are highly unlikely to be going anywhere. Talia only goes if he decides to retire, and he certainly won't be pushed out by the club (though his decision may be influenced by his current injury problems).

Ironically, you've failed to rule a line through Strachan, who hits the limit of 3 years on the rookie list and is highly unlikely to be upgraded.

Davis & Mackay are the only two "easy" delistings, with Crouch a likely RFA departure.

For a side thats finished bottom and probably in the bottom 3 you can only find 2 easy ones?

There are leaders in the group responsible for the poor performances and only playing finals 3 times in something like 9 years.
Finals 3 times in 9 years and you reckon its a hard call?
Needed a bigger broom a lot earlier. Kelly, Lynch, Mackay, Talia will not be part of a series finals campaign

The bulk of the clean out has already happened.

The bulk of the clean out has already happened.
My worry is that I have very little trust in the players that have been given opportunities since the cleanout (Jones, McHenry, Hamill, McPherson, McAdam, Fogarty)

Yes reading posters wanting all these young available players along with draft picks and Cat B rookies and just wondering how we are going to create the spaces in our squad if it isn't increased by AFL especially with talk of resigning Kelly and probably Lynch and even Talia .
Then hard decision whether to keep Matt Crouch and if not get decent draft picks for.
With so many top mids in draft with some from SA we need to make some room somehow and watch with interest how unravels.

It is literally the most correct term. Post-loss, people are literally celebrating moving up the draft ladder.

Breaking news: supporters want what most likely to generate a premiership.

More at 6 PM.

If we don't have cap space issues and no one wants to come here then keeping Crouch isn't a big issue.
It seems the issue is no one on here has any confidence in the coaches or selectors playing youth as a priority.

So instead of dealing with the issue we need to deal with the symptoms.

Truthfully based on talent and age there's a case that only MCrouch and Gollant should be recontracted. One may argue for Strachan but the rest technically have little medium to long-term value and the tough calls should be made

The Clarkson quote you threw out earlier says it all. If you retain the senior guys it's easy to play them.

The cold reality is if we want our kids to get midfield time, Matt Crouch needs to go. Not because he's a bad player, but we've locked up all of our major midfield positions until we're ready to move Sloane on. People live in this nice fantasy world that form in the 2nds mean anything for a youngster breaking into our senior squad, and a kid can overtake a senior player. It frankly doesn't. Where you sit on the pecking order means everything. That's not an Adelaide thing either. That's a league wide thing. Effectively If you keep the roadblock, you're not playing the kids.

Coaches have players they trust to keep them their jobs after all.

The single worst move Adelaide could do at this point is resign Matt Crouch. If we wanted to keep him, we should not have resigned Laird this season. Otherwise we're hoping to be saved from ourselves with one of them (or Keays) gets injured. It's the only way Berry, Schoenberg, Pedlar etc will see significant midfield minutes.
