Im not sure Ive ever not purchased the shnit focaccia if it was on offer and I was looking for something.

Like, I could roll up to a cafe and they could offer me $100 or the schnitzel foc and I'd tell them to keep the cash.

"One schnitzel focaccia please".
used to love a good focacia, why did they go the way of the dodo? like the vol au vent, another great thing passed into hisotry and seldom repeated.

The Victorian Planning Association are having a series of information sessions via zoom meetings as part of the next feedback gathering. I joined in yesterday and there would have been around 10 participants and 3 members of the VPA. I would encourage as many of you that are interested to join in and have your say, I can't find the details but there are a couple more coming up this week.

While I think this is a massive win for the club I must admit that they didn't inspire much confidence. The parking to me seems inadequate, it always has been and they seem to be aiming at providing for 18% car ownership for the area and some kind of 'hierarchical' parking system (the site is down so I can't find the relevant passages but if you search for the parking section someone smarter than me might be able to decipher it better). When I asked about match day parking the lady reckoned there would be some street parking (which already is inadequate let alone with 30,000 more residents), and that other forms of transport would be available including some that hadn't been invented yet (which seemed ****ing bizarre to me).

I also asked if there was any specific plans with upgrading any of the club facilities and it didn't seem that they featured in the plans. There is a guarantee that they keep the current footprint which is great but one of the VPA ladies made a quip about not guaranteeing that they wouldn't be moved to Tassie (which was pretty poor form). Also there was a dude who was specifically asking whether the new oval (flood/water catchment) would be an asset NMFC got preference for using which they denied, so there is some negative community feedback.

The concern I have is that they will pander to the views of a few loud-mouthed locals when in reality 90% of the people who will be living there haven't moved in yet. I get that it is a delicate balance for the council types to respect all viewpoints but I also think that this is a time when the club really need to push hard. I think the more people who push the clubs wagon in these things the better we will be down the track so I encourage everyone to get involved.

You can also contact this guy for info or to give feedback to.

And that is exactly why I decry people who think Caro etc are just screaming into the void and that what they say doesn't affect anything. It absolutely does damage us.

Yeah I agree. I think if something is said enough it gets accepted as holding some truth. I think the same philsophy is why it would be great to have multiple voices pushing the NMFC at every opportunity in the planning of this project. Like I said there were about 10-15 members of the public engaged, it wouldn't take a huge amount to get it dominated by pro North sentiments.

I think the parking is a non issue - that's why they are building a train station right on top of the place. It is 15,000 new residents btw not 30,000. The expectation will be that the bulk of these residents are students/younger renters - ie they will mainly ride bikes and catch the train.

However it is reasonable to assume that the day after the grand plans were revealed and Armarfio announces that 'NMFC is Arden...Arden is the NMFC...our future is here''....he quickly signed us up to play another 4 games in Tassie in 2022 without drawing breath.

At the very least this would be construed as 'sending mixed signals' to those not well attuned to the AFL and the NMFC.

I am not too worried about the parking. Optus Stadium in Perth was designed for people not to drive to, rather for the supporters to catch public transport to and it works great.

Still sounds like the club needs to push a little more to get the best outcome

Those not well attuned with the afl and nmfc would have no idea of us signing a contract, amount of games, what colour our team wears. Just a stupid person making a shit joke.

Great informative post.
I was concerned about liking your constructive and informative post, because of being accused of not cracking open the champagne bottle, like others have already and being considered negative for not celebrating the vague master plans.

Lots of work to be done by the club.

And a big thanks for taking an active interest in the redevelopment and having an input

Football is a business. I don't understand why you'd have a problem with that.

Well Ferbs its a bit like this.

If you have a wife you love but feel you need something on the side to keep you happy but you don't hide that something on the side your wife will get very upset and will probably end up leaving you.

If you are serious about keeping your wife and growing with her don't let the short term benefits of a mistress tempt you - not only is it bad for love but its bad for business.

Tassie has served its purpose - if we are serious about growing at Arden St its time to devote all resources to making sure is a success.

Some people may not be aware that the Arden precinct will not be completed by the start of next season. No doubt there will be commercial opportunities tied to the development that will go a long way towards replacing the Tasmanian money, but those opportunities will not come online immediately. In the meantime, we need to cash in and fill the coffers, especially as there is no guarantee that we will get full crowds in Melbourne next year.

Hey all,

If you want to support the club's vision and work on the redevelopment here, take ten seconds to fill in an online submission:

Below is what I sent:

I really like the changes that have been made to the Arden Structure Plan and the vision for the Arden Precinct it represents.

There’s clearly a major need for more open community space that can be used for a wide variety of purposes – from families enjoying green space, to games of soccer and football.

The current space at the North Melbourne Recreation Reserve is good, but we need that level of open space repeated – if not once, maybe two or three times!

The new Structure Plan also does well acknowledging the important role The Huddle plays in the community.

The Arden Precinct has to work for the community and it is vital that facilities with established links like The Huddle are given space to grow with the local population.

These were the main concerns I had about the draft Structure Plan – the lack of open community space, especially for games like soccer and football, and the lack of opportunity for The Huddle to grow with the community.

I also love wandering down to the reserve to watch the men or women train, or play on a weekend, and love the connection the North Melbourne Football Club club has with this community - its great to see the players in local cafes after training.

I think that people like living in an area that has an identity and history associated with a long standing footy club, because that’s increasingly rare in Melbourne.

Good job – look forward to seeing the precinct grow and develop.

Feel free to use that as basis for any message you send, or ignore it completely lol.

The main thing is we let know the VPA know we're engaged with the plan, there's lots of us and we want the club to be at the centre of this development.

The more submissions we can get to the VPA, the better it is for the club - and the closer it bring us to our next premiership.

This is my attempt:

It is great to see the structure plan has now incorporated more appreciation of the presence of the North Melbourne Football Club in the precinct. Having a club that fields AFL, AFLW, VFL and VFLW teams so close to so many current and prospective residents is unique for Melbourne and a fantastic point of difference - especially one that makes such a concerted effort to benefit the local community e.g. via The Huddle.

It will add an attraction to living there with greater opportunities for the community to come together to watch VFL and VFLW matches, training etc. and enjoy valuable time in the outdoors to enhance their mental health and boost liveability/amenity. Local hospitality venues will be able to thrive in the vicinity of the ground as people catch up on Friday evenings and weekends.

The implementation of the structure plan should provide additional open space around the recreation reserve as a priority to manage issues with excess foot traffic and maximise opportunities for formal and informal sporting pursuits. Any/all resources to enhance facilities in and around the reserve such as the pool will be a prudent investment to cater for the increase in patronage and a desire by current and prospective residents for state of the art facilities.

The structure plan should always ensure the club and the precinct enjoy fantastic symbiotic growth going forward to the benefit of the local community and club's supporters and members.

Good work team, I couldnt not do it!!

Congratulations on the great work and the changes that have been made to the Arden Structure Plan through the process to date and the vision for the Arden Precinct it represents.

As an old North Melbourne resident and now CoM resident I am particularly keen on the open space and cultural assets that will be the centre of this plan.

There’s clearly a major need for more open community space and amenity.

The strong focus on community sport, green space and strengthening the historical roots of football in North Melbourne is vital to creating a rich environment for families and young people to be outdoors and get involved in recreation & sport.

The opportunity to enhance the thriving NMFC which is supporting 2 men's and 2 women's teams into the future ensures a once in a lifetime opportunity to sustain something very special to the community. An aspect of the community that crosses so many boundaries and has been bringing people together for over 150 years!!- something our community needs. Something to be a part of, something to be proud of.

The retail and residential mix look like a huge win for people that live or visit the area. In fact I am thinking that I will want to move there before long. Linking the reserves with the new station, providing places to eat and drink will be a huge boost for people like me and my friends that visit often to watch teams play and train.

Good job – I look forward to visiting the precinct to watch it grow!

First time I’ve seen this picture with a huge second oval.

Anyone who speaks Governmentese want to read the full submission and give their feedback on how this affects the club? Doesn't appear to me to present an obvious problem, fingers crossed and all that...
I just put my submission in, if anyone has a spare minute jump on https://participate.melbourne.vic.gov.au/arden and put a submission in.

Arden Structure Plan and Planning Scheme Amendment C407

Have your say
This week is the final opportunity to have your say on the Arden precinct planning.
We encourage everyone with an interest to review the plans for Arden and make a written submission to the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) by 5pm Monday 11 October, 2021.
The City of Melbourne has now prepared its own submission to the proposed Amendment C407 and the Arden Structure Plan. After a thorough review, the Future Melbourne Committee endorsed the submission that will be sent to the VPA, which identifies a number of key issues to be resolved.
Key issues described within our submission
A detailed report has been endorsed by the Future Melbourne Committee for formal submission to the VPA as part of the current Arden consultation period.
There are a number of elements in the Arden Structure Plan that City of Melbourne support, including the provision of new open space to support the growing community, strategies to green the public realm, the proposed transport network which prioritises people walking, riding a bike and using public transport, and a target for zero net emissions by 2040. The proposed future health and education uses will help create a thriving innovation precinct.
However, we submit that the proposed Planning Scheme Amendment and revised Arden Structure Plan further consider:
  • Better alignment of the Arden Vison and key elements of the Structure Plan with the proposed planning controls.
  • Opportunities to deliver significant affordable housing.
  • Proposed development density and built form controls’ capacity to achieve high quality urban design and amenity outcomes.
  • Effective facilitation of innovation and employment uses.
  • The quality of open spaces.
  • The implementation of key strategies such as environmental sustainability.
  • Funding and delivery of future infrastructure projects.
  • Community rights to participate in future planning processes.

I’ve said it before this won’t stop until one of these campaigners is bashed or worse.

There are Venezuelan campaigners sleeping on my street that will do it for a happy meal.
