Watching Lipinski live, particularly his work or lack of work off the ball is illuminating. I watched several live games last year and he appeared to be very much a front-running, low-intensity in defence, slower than treacle midfielder who indeed has a few party tricks that the tv camera captures. The club has offered his plenty of opportunities and has a 3 year contract in front of him. His loss is not the fault of our club.
This surprises me, I went to all the games pre lockdown in vic and watched him closely and do not agree with the assessment. He definitely runs defensively and his tacking is comparable to other players, not as strong as some an improvement is required. He is quicker than libba and similar speed to dunks and Macrae. No doubt his core body strength is his major weakness and some perceive this as being soft, but this can be worked on and is the reason some tackles are broken, but we all could detail 100’s of broken tackles by most players.

My understanding is that his GPS numbers were always comparable to Bont and co. Anyway let’s hope he has a successful career with the Pies and compare him and our rookie of the year in 2 years time to see who we really should have invested time into😀

On off-contract duo Jake Riccardi and Matt Flynn …

“We’re pretty close with those two (after) the discussions I’ve had the last week with (manager) Scott (Lucas) about picking those boys off for another couple of years.”
Do you reckon Scott Lucas signs these contracts with just his left hand?

I wasn't sure about this - I thought he was but then that gives us 7 rookies, more than allowed
SSP and mid-season picks are always rookies.

Clubs using the SSP or mid-season draft can temporarily exceed maximum list spots but have to sort it out at the end of the year. It's the same as where a player sustains a long term injury early in the season, their club may already have a full rookie list but they can still take a pick in the mid-season draft to replace the injured player for the rest of the year.

We technically still have Lloyd on our main list, and an extra rookie in Scott. Lloyd will count as one of our minimum 3 delistings and we'll need to move at least one player off the rookie list (upgrade or delist) to bring it down to max 7. During the season, you only can't exceed the maximum total list size of 44 'active' players (retired and designated injured players become 'inactive' and can't play again that year once they've been replaced).

Can recall multiple times when Lipinski did not commit to contesting aerially and flinched. Combine with his one hand out run past tackles it shows a clear unwillingness to commit his body to contests. I know I would not either. But then I haven't got my hand out asking for an AFL contract and game time. Most AFL players are crazy brave. Lipi isn't one of them.

The Lipinski thing s**** me. Yeah, he wants an opportunity, but if you grow up a Dogs fanatic and you see an ace midfield in front of you, wouldn't you want to back yourself to break into it and have a shot at winning a flag with your club? He's goes to the Pies and every chance they miss the eight the next few years.
He still seems tight with the group.

If you're going to go anywhere you may as well go to the pies and be best 22 with hundreds of thousands of adoring fans.

Couple of years they might be out pushing finals again.

If you don't know much about him, how ca you say we should have played him more?
He was good early in the VFL season but his last VFL form was terrible. Tom Campbell flogged him. We shouldn't gift games to anyone, they should earn their spot.

Sweet needs more of a tank and can't rest forward, which shouldn't be a problem because English is more forward/2nd ruck anyway. Sweet is nowhere near ready for week in, week out ruck duties though.
I know about as much as can be expected to know of a 4 game AFL player. I saw several early season VFL games where he was great. I know he’s one of the better ruckman in the VFL most weeks (although did have some poor games towards the end of the year) I’ve seen enough to suggest that he was worth persisting with over our other options at the time, which were basically nothing. No ones saying he should have played every week but there was enough opportunity to let him settle into the role for a few more weeks when we had literally no other option yet we resorted to playing Tim lone ruck etc, we would have at least known a bit more about Sweet either way right now.

What do you mean he can’t rest forward, he rests forward with great effect in the VFL? Not at AFL level but how would we know that? His tank needs work but wasn’t a huge issue holding him back in the games we did see imo

Regarding Sweet

"In the five games the 23-year-old played, the Bulldogs won four of them and led the led the clearance count in all five"

Wallis plays best when he plays tall. He was our leading goal kicker in that role.

Naughton and JUH take the taller defenders.
And we were shit 3 Talls with English we were the second highest scoring team. Lets not forget Billy Gowers was our leading goal kicker in the same role

Side note, I'd be stunned if Josh Bruce is 198cm tall.

I'm hoping we're after Ladhams and Clurey. Would be happy losing Sweet and Young if we can bring them in. Place Martin on the rookie list and draft a new project ruck.
Ladhams yes Clurey is more of what we have got should be asking the question of Adelaide for McAsey

What do you see in McAsey outside of his draft position? He’s nowhere near cracking the Crows 22 and has struggled so much in the SANFL they threw him forward towards the end of the season.

Hope Wallis stays. Def can see a spot for him in our forwardline, especially with Bruce out for most of next year.

I'll preface this by saying I like Mitch Wallis, and I love the passion he brings, even this year with obvious disappointment at not getting much game time.

But in 2020, for most of the season, he was often the defacto main forward target, with bruce woefully out of form, Naughton missing 1/3 of the season, English playing predominantly ruck and no JUH, and limited games for Schache.

Even without Bruce for most of the 2022 season, I expect Naughton to be deep forward, more games for JUH, and if we snag an first ruck, English down there as well. Plus on this year's output, Schache is currently ahead of him too. So I expect a 3-tall forward line. Then for pressure smalls, we have Weightman, VDM, possibly Garcia, and Scott and McNeil held their own early this year too. And some of those can play higher up the ground, which Wallis unfortunately can not. He had one really good year as an inside mid (ironically in 2015 when Liber was out for the year with his first knee), and a good year in 2012 when we were a bog average team and he was very young). He's had other solid years (2016 and 2017), but it really looks like the only string to his bow these days is a goal-kicking mid. As a medium, he is then competing with Hannan (who at 190 I still class as a medium forward given Wallis is 186). Hannan showed late in the season and the finals he is probably more adaptable than Wallis at the moment, as well.

Given the mobility and skills of our midfield, and the rebound capability of our medium defenders, I don't see a role for Wallis in either of those areas either.

I hope he proves me wrong and can re-invent himself again, but pragmatically as things stand today, I think Mitch Wallis will continue to struggle for game time into next year.

Just looks like the kind of player that will thrive in a competitive team with better players and leadership around him
