After comments from Ratts this year, do you think we need another ready-to-go slow inside mid with no outside game? We have that already covered.

And with the evenness of that area of the draft, we would be better drafting someone who has traits that compliment what we already have rather than is similar too what we already have.

He’s not that slow.

Just discussing options anyway.

I just don't want to go backwards next year. The last few years we've been very active bringing in players trying to to bridge the gap. This year is the first year we are actually shedding good players with only internal improvement to bridge the gap. To be better next year we need to improve by probably 10% to slip into the 8 while staving off the other sides around our level also trying to move up.

The positives next year are....
King should be better and closer to what he put up late in the year and hopefully Sharman should be carrying on his form.
The injury list should be smaller.
The draw favours us after finishing low on the ladder.
The players we need to come on should develop now that they are getting games.

Experience says that....
We'll have our most important players injured.
Seb Ross and Jack Billings will still be in our best players.
The AFL will find a way to make our draw look like it should belong to a top 4 side.
Our kids will walk around like rockstars without putting in the work.

Good post Gringo , we can only hope we don't get struck down by injury again as bad as we were and our youth step up.

Mummy would eat him for breakfast , is he ever going to be good enough to hold his own in the ruck as a genuine first ruck ? Id say no , if you think so what do you do with Roma ?
King , King , Roma , Sharman . Members don't all fit forward
Yeah, I wasn't suggesting he was as good as Mummy. Just pointing out that is his style and is not suited to playing as a key forward.

I wouldn't be playing 2 rucks at all if we ended up with 2 Kings in our forward line.

You still need to have back up rucks on the list though.

I think it makes sense to look at a younger type that might actually improve rather than sticking with Hunter who clearly won't but I'm really not too fussed.

Xerri might be crap but he is better than Hunter.

At the end of the day we are picking a back up ruck, whoever we go with will not be super star.

No point looking at AFL stats for him as he hardly rucked.

At VFL level he averaged 21 disposals and 5 marks a game and 26 hit outs. To put it in context Hunter averaged 6 less disposals , 3 less marks but 6 more hit outs.

There’s a real myth that Paul Hunter needs a full preseason to be judged accordingly. He’s had a number of AFL preseasons and this is the finished product. Does he improve our list? No.
Will Xerri? Yes.
If we have to watch Paul Hunter run around for us next year, things won’t be going to well at Moorabbin.
I went back and watched Hunter's extended highlights from the last round. If he's able to put in that level of performance at an AFL level each week, he's a good 3rd ruck but no more which is all we need. Xerri would probably be ahead of him just but we couldn't carry both Hunter & Xerri surely.. Xerri may even cost us a pick which seems outrageous.

I get the enthusiasm for this guy, and the fun we’re having with it, but I’m cautious about performances over a few games rather than a broader portfolio.
So while Sharman has had a couple of good weeks, I’m not that caught up in the hype. Same as with Hind.
Let’s see the performance over a season or two.
However…..
For all sorts of reasons, that is a great, great mark.

This x 1000. No other team has put any work into him yet.

WHY ARE YOU KILLING THE ONLY JOY WE HAVE?!!!

Xerri may not have shown a lot playing out of position at AFL level but he has been dominant at VFL level playing in the ruck.

At 22, he's still a way off in terms of ruckmen.

People also need to realise that quality AFL rucks won't exactly he bashing the door down to come and play behind probably the best ruck combo in the league.

I'd really like Max Lynch, but I think he's at a point in his career where he'd want to go to a club where he thinks he can play first ruck.

I am looking at it from the angle we don't get Bing, and Marshall is preferred forward. Having both Heath and Xerri or even Flynn/Briggs, gives us two potential #1 ruck options for develop. That said, Marshall could end up being #1 regardless of whether we do or don't get Bing.
Like your line of thinking.. So if no Bing, Marshall eventually moves permanent forward. Heath becomes No.1 ruck in say 2-3 years time (with chop out from Marshall).

Maybe we should have a go at Mac Andrew in the draft this year who would be a great fit in this scenario in 2-3 years time playing as 2nd Ruck/Forward with Heath. Andrew is a chance to be available at our pick and if there's no pure mids like Ward/Hobbs available Id rather see us go with Andrew than another flanker in the first round.

Could be the risk we need to take. Still get Bing at some point though..ha

A pick that in all likelihood we wouldn’t use if we were to snap up both of our NGA kids.

From the limited vision I have seen Hobbs is a heart and soul type like Steele or Selwood - fearless and tough he is not a perfect fit for us but if he is available at our pick we would be mad not to take him. His outside game is better than a Dunstan type but not at the Ward or Daicos level but inside I think he is the pick of the draft. Is probably academic anyway as I expect him to be gone by our pick.

What I saw in the Metro Country game was that he was in every stoppage either first hands on the ball or laying the tackle to prevent the clearance first in and last up from the bottom of packs. Country were flogged but he kept flying the flag to the end.

Why not just go for Mac Andrew if we need another ruck that bad? He should be right around our pick.

The guy who apparently plays like a young Paddy Ryder could be mentored for a year by Paddy Ryder?

I know we need mids but I can remember the last time we made a needs vs quality decision...

Rofl.. I tend to agree. Ward I feel is our best bet but we could do a lot worse than Andrew. We're already going to pick up two flankers/wingers in Owens/Windhager later on so we shouldn't look at a flanker with our first pick.

He is. Doesnt suit our needs at all.
Our of curiosity would you say Dusty is one paced?

I’d say he is, he’s just strong in the contest and can go forward and kick goals. I see Hobbs as being a similar type player (obviously not as powerful as Dusty) but better defensively.

I say we get inventive with the Xerri trade and see if North would go for Xerri + 40 for 49 + Future 3rd.

Gets us extra draft points for Owens/Windhager, gives them a pick in next year's draft that they're looking for in the CCJ trade, and pushes the pick they're offering to Richmond even further back in the draft.

Sort of similar to how we flipped Pick 6 into two firsts when Freo tried playing hardball on Hill only with significantly lower stakes.
