Geelong and Umpires: Time for a Royal Commission?

Poor umpiring calls during the course of a match can be recovered from if you are good enough.

Poor umpiring calls at the death in a tight match? Not so much.

How is it irony if the title is deliberately referencing/poking fun at that? Or were you unaware of the thread on the umpiring board
Would have been the ideal spot for this thread too.

Lions supporters know we wouldn't have won the game even if the blatant Hawkins push in the back had been awarded.

The problem is that, yet again, Geelong home ground umpires are not paying obvious frees to Brisbane. Frees that stevie wonder would've seen from the moon. Clearly there is a bias against the Lions by these Geelong umps and they need to be pulled up for it.

The umpire's explanation was the real issue.

I get umpires making mistakes. It happens. But surely it should only happens if they simply don't see something?

If he was blindsided and didn't see the blatant push, I can forgive that. It happens.

But for him to state something happened, that simply didn't happen as his explanation for a bad decision, is quite alarming.

The explanation that they were both running and it was simply momentum that propelled Andrews forward, was simply fiction.

people who claim there is legitimate bias in umpiring are the same type of people who comment on the AFL facebook page about literally anything. Truly cringeworthy stuff
I think there is bias, for sure.

I think it's more about specific players though, rather than clubs.

There's zero doubt that some players get the benefit of the doubt from umpires. It's like they assume things based on who the player is.

And there's no doubt that some players get stitched up by umpires.

I also think that this applies to when a team has momentum. Umpires seem to get sucked in by it, and start making decisions based on the feel and flow if the game - rather than what is actually happening.

Cam's miss and blatant cheating by the umps is not the same thing.

Did the umpires also cheat by allowing Andrew's to do the exact same thing as Hawkins or when Close was driven into the ground inside 50.

Umpiring was pretty shit in general last night but a decision at the 19 minute mark of the last that resulted in a 9 point margin didn't decide the outcome

Earlier in the match Zorko crashes into Hawkins in a marking contest whilst looking nowhere at the ball.

No call made.

It’s always the ones at the end of a close one that draw the Focus.

They were pretty subpar throughout the match and a review with feedback should be given to the umps. I hope they do that rather than defending their calls or non calls.

I hate this. Idiots simply go “free kick count had two more” when looking deeper into where they were given / not given tells a much clearer picture of the story.
How many were missed in D50? How many were given in F50? How many resulted in scores? This is the data we should be able to access.

Here's some pretty easily accessible evidence: check out the hysteria on the main board thread compared to the Brisbane board's review.

I'll sum up the general thrust of the good Brisbane people. "We need to get better, they were missing their captain and B&F and should have beaten us by 4-5 goals. Could have pinched it, but a couple of shitty home town calls were costly."

It's a good thing they have a couple of random Hawthorn or other clubs' supporters riding in on their white horses to tell the Brisbane folk how badly they wuz robbed. What kind of prat goes making sympathy posts on an opposition club's board fishing for likes?

Either they're the most pleasant, balanced bunch on a Big Footy team board that I've ever seen, or Chris Fagan is right and the umpires weren't the difference, that maybe the 'neutral' sooks were just barracking against Geelong harder than they'd barrack for their own team.
