Opinion What would 2022 AFL State of Origin teams look like on paper?

I wish something like this could be done, but there is no chance the clubs would allow it.
I think there is a way it could be done if it was done properly.
Clubs could gain something for every played involved in some manner and it would need some big sponsorship behind it.
The thing to keep in mind, is clubs can still have their regional practice matches in second weekend and the weekend after the final of the championship is completed they can have their prime movers back for final practice match in city regions.
It cannot be half hearted, it has to have big money and sponsorship in behind and marketed as the biggest thing every two years for the sport. It is the highest level of the sport and should be treated as such every two years in March. It is only time of year it can be done and done properly. All the most talented players in the sport would rather play this than some intra club practice match or more training in early March. The international cricket season is over, Tennis is over. Just do it and do it big. It is ridiculous the people running the sport have not created it in past.

There no need for Allies.
Every state could have their own team.
I wish there was two weekends in early March for it every second year and there a first division and second division.
4 best states in division one and the the other 4 states and territories in second division.
NSW would be in division one for example.
SA v VIC and NSW v WA in first weekend. The two winners play second weekend for Australian Championship.
3rd and 4th play off to remain in division one for next championship with loser relegated to division two.

Winner of second division promoted in it's place for next championship two years beyond.
Representatives teams from places like ACT and NT still involved and it is just best from each territory or state whether in AFL or next level down out of AFL.
Or play those during a bye instead of split rounds. Make it a 24 round season beginning early in March, bye after round 11, week one of games during the bye, bye after round 19, championship and playoff game during bye two.

Nah, that is not learning from the past.
Mid season does not work.
That only worked when the SANFL and WAFL had no teams in the AFL and you could play VFL v SANFL origins or VFL v WAFL origins in early 80's before the VFL expanded and added clubs from there.
It has been time since mid 90's to do it in early March. It just boggles the mind how we not learn this and try some pissed half efforts at end of year or mid year. They do not work then and never have for so many reasons.
Before club seasons underway when players already training and keen for real matches is the perfect time for it.

Surely Brennan Cox walks into that backline.

Lincoln McCarthy deserves a spot in the team. Replace Redden for him.

Tall defenders are okay but I think small forwards would run riot against that team.

Reckon Laird, Burton, Sparrow might get a look in.

But you are right, SA top end talent has gone to s**t.

The SANFL is more interested in being the "best league outside the AFL" and recruiting talent rather than developing it.

Not perfect but

New South Wales
B: Phil Davis (GWS), Dougal Howard (StK), Harry Cunningham (Syd) (GWS)
HB: Zac Williams (Car), Dane Rampe (Syd), Braeden Campbell (Syd)
C: Isaac Smith (Gee), Jacob Hopper (GWS), Harry Perryman (GWS)
HF: Nick Blakey (Syd), Taylor Walker (Ade), Isaac Heeney (Syd)
F: Errol Gulden (Syd), Tom Hawkins (Gee), Josh Bruce (WB)
Fol: Jarrod Witts (GC), Jack Steele (StK), Callum Mills (Syd)
IC: Luke Breust (Haw), Tom Green (GWS), Harrison Himmelberg (GWS), Matthew Flynn (GWS)

Potenial Subs: Jeremy Finlayson (GWS), Michael Gibbons (Car), James Bell (Syd), Todd Marshall (PA)

Coach: John Longmire (Syd)

This is a team GC2015 created last year so there would be some changes into 2022. For starters Blakey is a half back now but you get the general idea.

Also Matthew Kennedy did not make the cut last year but he would be in the team in 2022 as he is a much better player now.
If we were doing to do an updated team:

B: Isaac Cumming - Dougal Howard - Dane Rampe
HB: Nick Blakey - Phil Davis - Zac Williams
C: Isaac Smith - Callum Mills - Harry Perryman
HF: Isaac Heeney - Tom Hawkins - Errol Gulden
F: Luke Breust - Taylor Walker - Harrison Himmelberg
R: Jarrod Witts - Jack Steele - Tom Green

Int: Matthew Kennedy - Lachie Schultz - Charlie Spargo - Jacob Hopper
SUB: Harry Cunningham

Probably lacking a gun key defender given Davis and Rampe's declines but it's otherwise a pretty damn good side.

Tasmania..

B: Rhyan Mansell Ryan Gardner Jake Kolodjashnij
HB: Jeremy Howe Alex Pearce Jimmy Webster
C: Aaron Hall Lachlan Weller Chance Jones
HF: Brodie Mihocek Ben Brown Mitch Robertson
F: Andrew Phillips Levi Casboult Jack Reiwoldt
Foll: Toby Nankervis Hugh Greenwood Tarryn Thomas

Inter: Hugh Dixon, Robbie Fox, Jackson Callow, Sam Banks

Emer: Matt McGuinness, Patrick Walker, Isaac Chugg

Such a tall side for a small state 😅

Given Victoria >>>>>>> the rest, would be interesting to see the sides as City v Country:

Melbourne:

B: James Sicily - Jacob Weitering - Luke Ryan
HB: Jayden Short - Darcy Moore - Jack Sinclair
C: Ed Langdon - Jack Macrae - Bailey Smith
HF: Marcus Bontempelli - Joe Daniher - Toby Greene
F: Dylan Moore - Max King - Jordan de Goey
R: Max Gawn - Christian Petracca - Touk Miller

Int: Andrew Brayshaw - Luke Parker - Tom Mitchell - Adam Saad
SUB: Josh Kelly

Country Vic:

B: Tom Stewart - Mark Blicavs - Jack Henry
HB: Sam Docherty - Jake Lever - Changkuoth Jiath
C: Sam Walsh - Clayton Oliver - Hugh McCluggage
HF: Dustin Martin - Tom Lynch - Patrick Dangerfield
F: Charlie Curnow - Jeremy Cameron - Tom Papley
R: Rowan Marshall - Ollie Wines - Darcy Parish

Int: Jack Crisp - Zach Merrett - Travis Boak - Josh Dunkley
SUB: Jake Lloyd

Key defenders a clear cut win for Melbourne but otherwise fairly evenly balanced.

I thought Tom Mitchell was WA based since he was recruited from Claremont in the WAFL.
IIRC, the rule is you play for the side where you spent a majority of time as a 10-17 year old. IIRC Mitchell didn't move to Perth until he was 15 and had hitherto lived in Melbourne so I counted him as a Vic.

B: Marcus Adams - Sam Taylor - Brandan Starcevich
HB: Daniel Rich - Jeremy McGovern - Liam Baker
C: Mitch Duncan - Patrick Cripps - Brad Hill
HF: Shai Bolton - Lance Franklin - Cam Zurhaar
F: Rory Lobb - Aaron Naughton - Liam Ryan
R: Tim English - Nat Fyfe - Tim Kelly

Int: Jaeger O'Meara - Wil Powell - Stephen Conigilo - Chad Warner
SUB: Nic Martin

Ryder and Jackson miss out for balance reasons. Definitely feels like WA footy is in a rough patch. A fair few guys there largely on reputation rather than performance (which I think is how a real SOO side would be picked)

B: Charlie Ballard - Brennan Cox - Ryan Burton
HB: Caleb Daniel - Callum Wilkie - Brodie Smith
C: James Aish - Lachie Neale - Jordan Dawson
HF: Lincoln McCarthy - Riley Thilthorpe - Brad Close
F: Kysaiah Pickett - Darcy Fogarty - Tyson Stengle
R: Brodie Grundy - Rory Laird - George Hewett

Int: Chad Wingard - Will Day - Connor Rozee - Jack Graham
SUB: Jason Horne-Francis

That doesn't seem too bad to me? Key forwards are awful and the midfield feels a bit too "accumulator-ish", but it's certainly comparable with NSW and WA.

Sean Darcy can’t make your country Vic team? Well ahead of Marshall IMO

I can't remember the actual ages, but the majority of "formative years" was something close to that at least. So, if that was his history you would be correct. And its based on where you lived - which is why Tom Hawkins remains NSW despite going to school in Vic.

There might be a few mid-career players running around in state leagues who would get in ahead of some of the unestablished AFL listed players - many of whom will likely be delisted and running around in state leagues next year.
I'm not sure how many Tasmanians are in the three main state leagues these days. There wouldn't be many from the TSL getting considered given how dire things are in Tassie footy.

Mitch O'Neill is in the SANFL and has nominated for the MSD.. a good dozen others in the SANFL and VFL but most players who have already been drafted and delisted from the AFL..
