Geelong vs pies final should not be at the mcg.

Comments like these are why interstate sides dislike Victorian clubs so much, this narrative that the footy world should revolve around the CBD of Melbourne and everyone else should confirm into line.

No the people of geelong shouldn’t drive 75-100+km through peak hour traffic over 2hrs on a Friday evening to get to a home game at the MCG, then drive home their kids by 1am that morning.

What a phenomenal advantage to the geelong football club and it’s loyal supporter base for finishing two games clear ontop of the ladder.

AFL only cares about $$$ not about equality and fans.
Doesn’t take anywhere near that long on the worst day,

Yes it does. Can take 2 hours from geelong to Melbourne and especially for those living a bit further out in geelong. Geelong is a massive rural region mate we don’t all sit there living on the edge next to the highway. Then throw in peak hour traffic on a Friday night and it’s a disaster.

Big middle finger to the geelong fans

But geelongs stadium has better dimensions for football then the mcg. Its the mcg that should change. Its too circular and too short which results in too much boring circle work.

ps. The fact the grounds are different dimensions is just another reason why this game should be in geelong.

geelong earned the right to have the ground dimension and crowd advantages. Not collingwood.

this would not happen in europe or the states. we all know it wouldnt.
why do we accept it in the afl? I will say why. Cos it only really disadvantages geelong (and eventually gold coast if they ever make a final). So the majority simply dont care cos they only benefit from it.

A few years ago sydney rightfully claimed it unfair when they had to go play their home final against gws at homebush. Which was only 25 minutes away. Ironically most melbourne supporters supported their plight.

but when it comes to geelong and finals its massive cognitive dissonance.

it needs to be called out. This needs to stop.
Rebuild the mcg to match your ground?
I can’t believe there isn’t a standard size, and both yours and sydneys grounds are not either made to comply, or not be used!

It's a final FFS. If you're good enough, you'll win it anywhere.
It’s more the principle and equity of it. You can’t drible on about equity as much as the AFL does then when finals come around it’s al cha Ching Ching $$$ of the bank accounts.

Either the AFL is all in for equity and fairness or they are not.

Forcing the geelong fans to travel 75-100km through peak hour Friday evening traffic to get to their home game at the MCG is not anyone definition of equity and fairness.

Please proceed to ask cat fans what it’s like trying to make that trip work on a Friday and you will find it’s very far from a “home ground” advantage for cats fans and the last thing that is “for the fans” of the home entitled team

I have a holiday house in indentedhead, often do the drive on a Friday night, never takes over 1.5 on a bad day, usually it’s 75 min no speeding. plus you guys are going against the traffic,

Fix your ground then, correct size and seat 95,000

It will make a mockery of the competition if the clear competition leader is playing its home final in front of 75 thousand screaming pies fans at the ground the pies play 15 games at each season when the pies finished fourth.

we can not have a repeat of the ridiculous 2017 finals series.

surely the competition has moved beyond the amateurish of playing finals where crowds are highest at the expense of fairness. Other professional sports do not do this.

note the grand final is a little different because there are no home sides in a grand final and the crowds arent heavily biased to mcg tenants due to fans travelling and all the neutral fans. So please dont bring grand final arguments into this thread as its not equivalent.

play the game at either kardinia and if thats not possible (it is) then play at least docklands.

for the sake of the competition.

See you at the G.

Yep and the grand final should be at the higher place home ground, not at the MCG every year. Despite finishing higher than Collingwood and despite even beating them in the first final we had to play the 2018 grand final at their home ground. I wish we had a fairer comp but it is what it is and I hope it changes one day.
I wouldn’t bet on that.

The day WC is the first non Vic team to 10 premierships, they’ll finally include the VFA tally just to spite your club

I know this is probably unwise of me to comment on this thread. Why would a Cat fan be upset. They have a great setup. 16 games in Victoria every year, 8 of those with a obvious home ground advantage. No other team in the league has their own home ground. It's a huge win for the Cats. The games "away" aren't that bad either. Marquee games against Hawthorn for Easter Monday and Collingwood and Tigers seems like a good set up. Maximise big crowds and exposure while still a damn good chance to win.

I still remember when Richmond had to go down to Geelong in 2017. Lost by a couple of goals late in the year. I think the last time before that was 2006, and I think it may have been Wayne Campbells last game (he ended on 297 for what it's worth). It has always felt like the 2017 finals series started this statement from Geelong. Tigers beat them a few weeks after going down in a close game in Geelong, and it was high on the agenda for awhile. Chris Scott included. He would always bring it up. Made an issue out of it. Probably distracted and hurt their chances to be honest.

If Geelong are good enough to win the flag this year, they will. And Geelong will not say a peep about where the games are played.
I never remember hearing this sentiment about the Cats in '07. Or '09 or 11. They were great Geelong teams! Strange how it is a recent phenomenon.

Fun fact: The only final Geelong have ever hosted in GMBHA Stadium is against the Mighty Freo D(Sh)ockers. And they lost. It makes all the less sense. They blew a decent shot at a flag that year (2013) too though. They were actually my tip that year. Thought they would keep there odd year dynasty thing going.

Looks like the AFL couldn’t make up its mind whether to schedule Cats-Pies as a day game or night game so have instead scheduled it at the bullsh*t in-between timeslot of 4:35pm.

Makes as much sense as them not being able to decide whether to play the game in Melbourne or Geelong so instead playing it in-between at Lara Reserve.

Surely only the Dogs, Saints and Roos would get screwed more than us in home finals? They host finals in their home city but I’m also assuming that they play at the MCG less than us throughout the year which balances it out.

I think we have the best H&A advantage in world sport and get completely ****ed over when it matters the most.

I don’t think the capacity of our ground or the AFL making money has anything to do with where our finals are played. Probably would’ve played in a lot more than 5 grand finals since 2007 if we had home finals & everybody knows it. Doesn’t mean I’m saying we’d have won them, though.

What are you unhappy/arguing about? The Dogs and Saints balancing out? Geelong have the most unique home ground advantage in the league. Enjoy it, rather than fight it. * when it mattered most? When you were the best you won. It was that simple.

Cats have not been the best for a decade. They have a chance this year to prove it, and probably stick it to a lot of supporters. It's feels like a bit of a last chance saloon, bit we have said that before so who knows. Still it feels like once a multiple of once the generational players go, they must be some reset. Time will tell I guess.

Most players don't do a Selwood or a Hawkins, and that's a compliment of their abilities. Hawkins in particular is against the curve as his best years are as an older player.

All the best to you, until we play the Cats.

Go Tigers!

Agreed. Geelong should get first dibs on their timeslot, then Melbourne, then Freo and Brisbane should get whatever is leftover.

It doesnt really matter... If the cats win they get the Friday time slot in the prelims, so they get an extra day over the other prelim winner..

If Geelong lose this it’ll be oh so predictable and awful for their fans. If they are any sort of team they’ll win by 8 goals. However, I am really worried for them.
Don't be.
