Was Sheppard still officially on our list in 2022?

Yes

Current changes to the 38-man senior list are Sheppard, Kennedy and Redden retired, Nelson delisted, Rioli requested trade, Hunt in as a free agent, Jones needing to be upgraded. So we’re now at 35 (assuming Rioli is gone).

On top of that, Winder and Witherden are still without contracts (possibly Hurn and Shuey too?), and someone under contract like Langdon, Foley or Clark might be delisted and redrafted as a rookie.

To be fair, kinda hard to trade Houston after he just signed a five year deal. He's a Victorian, so for him to make a commitment like that would mean putting down roots in South Australia. I wouldn't blame him for not wanting to travel west and being even further away from family. We'd have to be willing to pay him more than Port are.
It feels like more of a statement. Ie Port are not willing to part with value to make a trade happen rather than us blocking, we will probably make another crazy request like Rozee or Bonner knowing it will be rejected, then swoop in with George. If that gets rejected, then it becomes a case of well what are you willing to give up.

Shuey got another year.

Hopefully on a reduced rate as apparently he’s our highest paid player as captain.

Someone of JHF's quality/potential doesn't come through the door for pick 8 in a middling draft and a (presumably) later 1st next year. Especially when they are also trying to afford Junior and Esava.

I really don't see how this deal gets done without Port giving up a good player. If someone this highly rated comes available somewhat unexpectedly you might have to ask the question of a few players. Say Houston, MG, SPP, Bonner. Not an untouchable but still quality

JK got nudged out of Carlton when they were desperate to get Judd. Not to equate JHF with Judd, but he could/should be closer than MG will be to JK.

Is it just me or is this 3 way deal getting worse?
In all honesty I reckon Nth are better off just dealing direct with Port. Should be pick 8 future first and a player of reasonable value.
If you want pick 2 then north should talk to our club post trade.
In a 3 way deal someone is going to get shafted and it shouldn’t be North as JHF is under contract and shouldn’t be us because we already have pick 2.

Oh I’m talking years of failure. Many years.
Aside from paying a little bit overs for Kelly, I don't see too many failures in our trading history...

Yeo was good value at the time and became an absolute steal. Redden was an astute piece of trading. Cripps became a bargain. Wellingham wasn't a good trade but we did get one incredible season out of him.

Port got us good for Ebert, but he was playing pretty rubbish football for us. Almost the same price we paid for Yeo but even with Ebert's improvement at Port he was still never close to the footballer Yeo has been for us.

Unless I've missed any others in the last decade, the rest have all been minor trades for very low picks.

I think the issue (and this is speculation with no evidence or information - so BF seems the perfect place for it) is that Port would need to give up 8 + F1st + B22 player to us for 2 and Rioli

Then

Give up 2 + B22 player to Nth for JHF.

So they have gone from just shuffling picks to get players in to having to give up 2 quality players (the amount of quality remains to be seen - but it isn't going to be Fredericks). Granted they bring in 2 x B22 players for that cost (one likely elite in the future, the other apparently the most naturally skilled player from the most naturally skilled family to play the game).

If they can find 2 players willing to entertain a move, plus get interest from nth and us in those players then the deal will likely happen easily - but they have a lot of work to do.

That is what we asked on day one, we have been Koch blocked, they don't want to let a player of reasonable value go. If they don't want to let someone go they have to try and improve the picks. Crows offered us 4 and future 1st (5) last year and they likely would offer something similar next year so their offer is not great. In hindsight, we should have taken Crows offer last year but it is what it is.

I am thinking of sweeteners to the 2 and Rioli to Port for 8 and future first

Clearly Port need plug in players so we cannot straight pillage as we are a nice club. I am not going for their obvious top end, thought I would go for other players

Here we go - something for the other stevedores stains. I would propose that Port need to agree to 2 of the following: -

1. Georgiades for Waterman
2. Houston for Rotham
3. Drew for Trew
4. Boak for Gaff

Not even in hindsight.

Is there any talk from your end as to which player/s might be enticing enough to take the Port deal (whether that is 8 + F1st + Player or 2 + Player is semantics a little, just want to get an understanding of who Nth might be interested in)?

Waterman and Rotham are interesting options. I think Waterman is an AFL calibre forward but Oscar Allen is ahead of him. Rotham showed glimpses of attacking flair at WAFL level and played better as a second ruck at AFL level than as a defender. A creative coach might get more out of him than Simmo.

Totally disagree Ginbey is better than Phillipou, Hewett is the best kick of the three of them he is elite there
I'm not going to argue with you about an East Perth product...

Hewett can also be lazy with his kicking when not under pressure, miss easy targets. For me he just hasn't shown enough to consider him inside top 10.

I think Phillipou is already a gun, but has plenty of development left.

I think Rawlings will still be in good connection with the Eagles crew so I expect them to tag team Port.

Reckon North just need to stand there ground.
He’s under contract and considered a serious talent.
Port are trying to ply him out of your club they need to pay a price that your club is willing to do a deal with.
So if Port don’t improve the offer your club is in a position to either accept the under offer last minute or hold him and get Adelaide involved next year.
End of the day the onus is on Port to pay up they have said to the player we will take you in.
They can’t force the trade, North have a contracted player.

If we were to get Houston out of Port we’d jump ahead of them next year.

Houston and Amon are far bigger losses than JHf and Willie are additions if we are talking next year alone.

Add to that the fact that their KPD’s suck and there’s not a heap of improvement on their list (Butters and Rozee are guns and should improve but majority of their best 22 will be on the decline). I can see their future 1st being a top 7 pick easily.

I only heard that we have spoken to Butters manager, well, we spoke to Bonners manager to have a laugh at being linked to him but I think we have enough half-backs.

They have a lot of Victorians on their list, probably more from Vic than SA which is a bit odd. There were rumours Bergman wanted to return home but not too sure.
